Beth doesn’t make friends easily. She shuts people out almost purely by choice. She would call it a survival mechanism, but on some level she knows that’s a lie. The point is, her mannerisms and the way her mind works have made her lonely. That’s why running into James was so lucky for her. The two of them got on so well. Beth knows by now to treasure a relationship when it comes that easily to her. Some might even call it a natural bond or appetence.

For a while now, Beth has been communicating with James by way of phone and text. It’s nearly impossible for the two of them to find themselves in the same city at any given time. The two of them travel too much. Just when it begins to seem like it will never happen, though, the impossible becomes possible.

It isn’t a chess tournament that brings them together, but a trip Beth has chosen to take for publicity. Ordinarily she would have blown the press off entirely given her general lack of respect for most journalists, but coming to New York at this specific time means she’ll be in the same city as James at the exact same time.
