The one conceit of this meme: humans (or human-expies, whatever beings they may be) mate for life. With this comes the typical trappings of "mating for life" - indescribable closeness, contentment around your "destined," and, of course, in your all-too-familiar worst case, jealousy and rage should the bond be threatened.

Oh, and there's also the little caveat that, should your mate die, you die as well. But that's not too much to swallow, is it? The whole thing is only a small conceit, you know.

For as long as he can remember, Ianto has been steeped in stories about soulmates. The concept is romanticized in literature and film, capitalized upon for numerous national and international holidays, and glorified about almost every other form of relationship. But even as over saturated as the world is with the idea of everlasting love, no matter how improbable, Ianto still believes. Believes that even death cannot stop true love; only delay it for a little while. That one day, he might find a love that will follow him into the next life.
