[ Girls have been going missing from the same few blocks on the edge of town, and Rose has talked to enough of them to know exactly who it is doing it and how to get the bastard to take her home instead of another living girl.

If she realized they were being followed, she might have been more careful. Maybe been a little quicker when he came at her with the knife that's lodged between her ribs. Instead, she hears breaking glass and crashing noises as everything goes dark around her.] Oh. Fuck.

[ She bleeds out fast, there was no saving her.

Except that she's standing on the other side of the room about a minute later, looking down at the empty coat where her body was. Instead of the scavanged clothes of a teen runaway, she's in, of all things, a green silk dress. There's no trace of the blood that should be there.]

Shit, that hurt.

[It's always the cases involving kids that especially bother Jason. Bastards who victimized them deserved to not only get shot, but get a full clip of his gun. So of course he spent weeks investigating the edge of town and the missing girls. It took some time but Jason thought he found a suspect.

The problem with tailing someone was that one couldn't be too close to their target, or else the target could be spooked and run away. Crowds gave more coverage and it was easy to hide in one without the target knowing someone was following them. The more sparse the area though, the more distance one had to keep as they tailed someone.

Then Jason realized the suspect might've found their next victim. He could've chased after the suspect but decided to check on the girl and hope she somehow survived. He bursts into the room]

Her eyes go wide when someone else bursts in and the smell of ashes and lilies fill her otherworldly senses. A death she can't prevent. She's assuming she knife fight she just lost just got upgraded to gunfight.

Like a food cycle of street crime.

It's her last thought in her body before both it and her consciousness blink out. An empty coat on the ground is the only trace of the girl in the room- even the blood that had been on the knife in her chest is gone.

It's also on the floor instead of in a body, leaving the man unarmed. The way his face goes from befuddled shock to mortal terror would possibly be funny if the mortal terror wasn't justified.

[Jason doesn't have time to think once he's in. He takes out one of his guns and cocks it at the suspect. He'll have to ask questions later. There was a more immediate threat around]

[if there is one bad habit that pietro has brought back with him to america, is that super speed means that he can go about basically doing whatever he wants, right? like going a few cities away from where he's stationed at to go into posh stores for fancy clothes and other things.

there is no real need, considering that this isn't sokovia, but there are still people who could do with a nice pair of socks for the winter or food to fill up their empty fridges.

it is a little bit like charity, maybe. the illegal kind.

a flurry of movement streams by the concrete in queens, and pietro actually does a double-take, spotting a familiar face. except there's one problem: it's way after dark, it's desolate, and why is the kid walking by himself looking all sullen? spidey-senses or not, pietro appears besides peter, walking casually beside the teen as if this was intended from the start.]

As ghosts would say, boo.

[yeah, all casual, sokovian accent present, wearing his tracksuit and a having a bag slung over his shoulder.]

( what's gotten peter looking so morose? oh, it's a day that ends in "y", that's what. not to sound like eeyore or anything. today was not his day. this morning, his alarm didn't go off, this homeless guy who reeked of urine tried to steal his backpack on the subway, m.j. yelled at him for not paying attention during practice, and, finally, he missed the returning subway home and had to wait for the next one. but, really, the cherry on top of this shitty sundae is when he senses the presence of then hears the unmistakable sokovian accent of one pietro "what are you? a cop?" maximoff.

he lets out a soft, mock scream. ) Ah! You got me. ( his head turns to pietro and he notices his tracksuit. ) You just come from a drug deal or something?

[it's almost as if peter knows him way well at this point. the older of the two puts an arm around the shoulders of the other, still incredibly casual. it's always easy (and fun) to get a rise on peter parker.]

These are things that aren't — what's the word? Disposed? Ah, disclosed. Besides, [and he's no longer there, using his speed to stand now in front of peter, walking backwards.] these are my usual clothes.

What's with your long face?

( he eyes pietro, suspiciously, as they both continue to walk down the street. thankfully, the streets are empty so no one can witness the blue streak with bleached hair whipping around peter at a thousand miles per hour. ) You're dressed like a Russian mobster. ( and peter should know. he's got some experience dealing with russian mobsters. ) Like, I feel like you're gonna break my legs or something.

( let's see if peter can stick the landing and get pietro off the topic of why his face is long. )

[momentarily, pietro stops, so that peter almost bumps into him. if it's intimidation the kid is assuming, then pietro can use intimidation tactics. but just as quickly as he stopped to make a point, pietro grins and turns back around to walk normally beside the other.]

That is also insulting. Don't call me Russian when you know I'm from Sokovia. [might not exist as a country anymore, but!] Like I said, this is my normal clothes. Easy for running.

[he hitches up the bag on his shoulder.]

So, where are we going, Peter Parker?

[puts a pin on the question about why the long face.]

( a frown twists at his mouth at pietro's quick movements. he wants to snap back that he must've missed sokovian history day at school, but he keeps quiet. after everything that's happened, maybe there should be a sokovian history day in all schools.

peter shoots an incredulous look at pietro. ) I'm going home and going to sleep. I don't know what you're going.

( the implied message behind his words is that pietro is not invited to tag along. they're friends and peter thinks he's awesome, but it's been a long day. )

[the look is ignored, as pietro is bound to do, and instead he meets the kid's glance. everything's alright here, yes?]

It is very late, you know. I am surprised to find you still walking around.

Are you sure you are not doing anything exciting? Maybe you have your costume in your bag?

[at the last question, he tugs at peter's backpack.]

Hey, hey. ( peter's grip on his backpack tightens as he escapes from pietro's grabby hands and then almost knocks down a trashcan. grimacing, he reaches out and stops it from hitting the ground. he sighs and turns back to pietro. ) I missed my normal train so I had to catch the later one. There's the big mystery, Columbo.

( and of course peter has his costume in his bag. always. just in case something arises. but he will neither confirm nor deny this. whatever "something" or "exciting" pietro has in mind is not something peter wants to participate in. no siree bob. )
