“Wei Ying, this is Lan Zhan. His courtesy name is Wangji.” His Uncle’s hands were large and heavy on his shoulders, that smile kind and gentle as if he was introducing a cat to a mouse. That might be rather accurate given how hyper the younger boy could be compared to the string rule abiding one across from him. Nodding his small head he conveyed that his Uncle had been heard and understood which earned him a squeeze on his shoulders. His Uncle’s gaze then turned to the small white ironed suit boy across from him. “Lan Zhan, this is Wei Ying. Please take care of my nephew while I talk to your Uncle.”

Nephew wasn’t accurate but it was the word Madam Yu made Jiang Fengmian use. He wanted to call Wei Wuxian his son, which Wei Wuxian knew because when she wasn’t around he did use the word. Out of fear of it getting back to Madam Yu, in public he was his nephew. Regardless of any situation Wei Wuxian always called him Uncle Jiang. He had a mother and father, he remembered them vaguely, and they were not that man.

They definitely weren't that woman he’d go home to after this.

Taking a breath he slid his gaze from where Jiang Fengmian vanished to Lan Wangji and offered his hand out. When the other boy didn’t take it he took a few steps forward and reached down, gently grasping Lan Wangji’s and then gently pulled him in the direction of the bookshelf that he’d seen. There wasn’t much here for children but he was informed that he was not to be loud, disruptive or bratty. Madam Yu promised that he’d never see daylight if he did. Wei Wuxian was quite determined to behave himself.

With Lan Wangji in tow he lead him over to the bookshelf and tugged him close, scanning the shelf for something he could both reach and read to Lan Wangji. At the very least sharing a book would be quiet and could hardly get them in trouble… right? Right. Finally he spotted one on older instruments, something he did have an interest in and reached up for it. On his tiptoes he struggled and with some effort managed to grasp the spin of the book and pull it down. Holding it to his chest he looked over to Lan Wangji and grinned widely at him. Victory!

Leading the other over to the tea table he sat down with the other pressed against his side and opened the book up. They could look it over together, learn the various internment’s. He paused the book every so often when he saw one that interested him, like the Guqin and various other older ones. They spent a while looking at that book and when his Uncle came back to collect him he delicately passed it over to Lan Wangji.

His Uncle helped him up and smiled softly, crouched down in front of him.

“Hmph, the boy isn’t nearly as troublesome as I was expecting.” Lan Qiren, Wei Wuxian knew him but only from what he heard from his own Uncle. The man seemed—hard. He shifted closer to his Uncle and watched the two of them.

“Wei Ying is only five, we found him a few weeks ago in Yiling. Which is why I thought it would be good if later down the line he attended your school. To catch up with his peers. We can talk about this again later since you’re so unwilling to allow a child the chance to grow and develop, Qiren.” Ah, so even by behaving himself he had failed to do much. “Wei Ying is also quiet today, did Ziyuan say anything?” Slowly he pressed his lips together and averted his Uncle’s gaze. “Mm. Wei Ying, say goodbye to Lan Zhan. I hope he’ll be your friend.”

Giving a nod he turned to face Lan Wangji and gave the man a proper and practiced bow. He could make up for whatever he did wrong with this, hopefully. “This one hopes to see Second Young Master Lan later.” Standing up he gave Lan Wangji a smile. “I like the Guqin best in our book.”
