But seeing as how it only comes once a year, you'd better make it fantastic or you'll be sleeping on the couch... again :( 5. Itachi chewed on a raspberry, finding it a little tart. He screwed up his face and swallowed, but he liked it better than the bitter or tasteless ration they often had to eat when things were bad. Itachi stopped and looked at Shisui, obediently opening his mouth as Shisui held up the strange root.

Shisui's lips twisted slightly. "Sorry, I couldn't find any sugar, but the blueberries might be sweeter..." He paused to put the root to Itachi's mouth, putting the start of the fat end on his lips. "Hold it and chew it slowly." He waited for Itachi to try it, anxiously hoping he would like it. It was very mild, not much more than sweet water, but you could eat the flesh. It was filling. It would make the meal with the fruit he'd found.

Shisui pushed the blueberries towards Itachi, leaving the blackberries in his bag. He would eat those later. "Always remember that you have to save stuff for later, no matter how hungry you are then. We have plenty of stuff, so you can have all the berries, and the bread, and this thing and the carrots..." There was no meat or dairy, though. The war took those away.

Itachi nodded solemnly as he chewed on the root. He didn't eat much, maybe only half as much Shisui, and he knew only too eat as much as he was allowed so there would be more for tomorrow. It was better to be a little hungry then a lot hungry.

The root tasted better than the watery-milk Shisui had left with him, so Itachi ate what he'd been given, watching Shisui and the food he'd brought solemnly in turns. His stomach rumbled, squeezing a little, and Itachi considered the blue berries with distrust. They were blue. That meant they were bad.

Itachi gave Shisui a very disappointed look. The berries were moldy!

While Itachi ate, Shisui parted the bread he'd been given, then parting it again to have half for another day. He left the bigger fourth to Itachi by setting it on his knee, though, and then saw the look.

"Eh? Oh, the berries are fine, Ita." Shisui reached forward and bit a blueberry in half, showing the pale purple inside to Itachi. "They're sweet! They're just a weird color."

Itachi stared in horror as Shisui took a bite. He made a distressed noise, a little whimpering noise like a puppy, and grabbed for Shisui's arm to keep him from eating anymore. Last time Shisui had eaten something blue he'd been sick!

With all his tiny, bony weight, Itachi tried to wrestle the berry away from Shisui.

"Itaaaa," Shisui protested, but let the berry be taken from his hand in favor of hooking his arm around Itachi's waist. "Try it, okay? If it tastes bad somehow, spit it out and flush your mouth with water, but I promise it's fresh." Please, please eat it. Shisui carefully let Itachi go after a few seconds.

Itachi stared at the berry. It was blue and purple. Purple was the color or bruises. Plums were okay because they were bright and yellow-orange on the inside. Purple and blue were not okay food colors. Not good.

Itachi twisted in Shisui's lap and stared up at him, still extremely distrusting and dissatisfied. It was Blue. BLUE.

You did not eat blue and purple.

Someone was probably playing a mean trick on Shisui and told him they were okay when they obviously weren't.

Shisui sighed. "Just try it, okay?" He needed food. Itachi needed fruits and good food, and now it was all over the ground. Shisui took out the blackberries, turned the bag face up, and picked up the roots and bread, trying his best to get any specks of dirt off of then, and then started pawing the raspberries back into the container.

"Please, Ita, please eat it. I promise it's good for you. Promise." Shisui mumbled it into his ear, just a little tired. They'd gone to bed hungry for a long time, they needed food.

Itachi turned his head to look at the mess he'd made. A huge mess. He'd knocked all the food over, and now everything was dirty like the food they normally had. Itachi knew Shisui had worked hard for this food, so they should be careful with it, but now he's made it all dirty.

Itachi looked at the half of a blue berry he'd crashed partially all over his hand and frowned.

He didn't want to eat it. He was sure it would make him sick.

But Shisui kept promising.

Vyer upset, Itachi scowled and ate the berry. It was weird and grainy. It didn't really taste good, but it didn't taste rotten bad.

"See?" Shisui brushed at a root.

"It's good." Please like it, please like it. "We have carrots too. You like those." Eat it. He couldn't keep Ita safe otherwise.

Itachi really didn't like it, but he nodded as if he did so he wouldn't upset Shisui anymore than he already had. They wouldn't last long anyway. Itachi twisted around and grabbed the hunk of break he'd knocked into the dirt, dusting it off best he could.

Shisui looked at Itachi for a few seconds, then leaned over and opened the backpack, taking a carrot to put with Itachi's food. "There's nothing to put on it, sorry." Shisui shifted the blueberries to his side, because Itachi didn't like them, and took a few to eat.

"There's still the raspberries and blackberries if you want'em. The raspberries are less sour." Maybe he could try to find some meat, or a banana, later. It would be good. Shisui poked his nose into Itachi's hair, chewing with his mouth shut. good, tame ninja.

Itachi scowled, because Shisui obviously didn't think he actually liked the blueberries. Itachi reached over and took the berries from Shisui's side and picked one out. He stared at it, then ate it.

They were horrible.

Shisui softly shook his head, but let Itachi do what he wanted with the blueberries, reaching over and taking his piece of bread from the pile. He shook it off a last time, and bit into it before picking up a blackberry to eat with it.

"One day we'll have jam, and it'll be sweet and you'll like that," Shisui mumbled. He'd tasted jam once, with a family that had taken him for a little while, when there were still families who would take an extra mouth.

It was apricot. He'd never seen the fruit, but he thought it was good, a little bitter. That was okay.

Itachi really didn't like blue berries. The more he ate, the more he was sure his tummy didn't like them either. Itachi stopped and nibbled on the bread. His stomach made an unhappy rumble.

Itachi leaned back into Shisui and picked at his bread.

Oh, no, no no. Shisui took away the blueberries, then pulled out a water canteen for Itachi. "Drink, okay? It might make you feel better." Please don't be sick. Shisui brushed Itachi's hair back and shifted, trying not to be anxious.

Itachi took the water and sipped, setting the bread down in his lap. He pressed back against Shisui, which made him feel safer and a little better. His stomach burbled again.

Shisui rubbed his hand over Itachi's stomach, biting into his own bread. At least the sun was out, and they were warm. At least, at least.

Itachi's stomach gave another unpleasant gurgle, a twinge, and Itachi grimaced, curling up a little. Another rumble, then something rising.

Very, very quietly Itachi burped, but it taste nasty and sharp and like blue berries. Yuck. Itachi took another drink of water and decided he wasn't really that hungry anymore.

Shisui looked at Itachi and then nudged him up. "Come over here to the bush." His stomach fell. Itachi was going to be sick. Shisui took the canteen with them.

Itachi clung to Shisui. He felt better. He just didn't want to eat. He also didn't want to hide in the bushes like there was trouble. Itachi clung to the back of Shisui's shirt, burying his face in it and refusing to move.

"Don't be sick on the food," Shisui warned, and hugged Itachi around the shoulders, taking another bite of his bread. He would eat the blackberries and blueberries and his bread, and save the rest for Itachi.

He packed away Itachi's food carefully, then took a bite of his root. Still good.

Itachi nodded, still clinging to Shisui as the other moved around and put things away. Itachi wanted to curl up in the sun and wait for his stomach pains to go away, but he didn't want to leave Shisui. He'd just wait until Shisui stopped moving, then curl up and get his nap.

Shisui finished the root, bread and berries, then laid out on his back, taking Itachi with him. He knew those little noises. "Have a good sleep, 'kay?" Naptime.

Itachi curled up close to Shisui, laying his heavy head on Shisui's arm and carefully closing his eyes. If he was with Shisui, he was safe. Nothing would hurt him. Itachi made a soft noise as he settled his back against Shisui's side, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
