Ironically, it was while Finn was completely AWOL. I was listening to oldies while fixing up the apartment Kurt and I rented and it came on. I remember wondering if I'd given my heart to the wrong man. I even thought briefly of calling you.
Then I felt guilty and changed the station.

You were? Even at the cost of a national title? I mean Vocal Adrenaline was going through a dry spell that I'm sure you wanted to correct.

Of course I wanted to correct it. But I knew the moment that I heard you sing, there was no fucking way we could beat the emotion you threw into that ballad. If I was going to lose the title to anyone, I'm glad it was you.

Vocal Adrenaline's dynasty just ended when they lost the most prodigious talent they'd clearly ever had when I graduated. You can't really blame them for not being able to be coached back to greatness.

Would you believe me if I told you that I actually thought about you when I was singing it? Seeing you again, I didn't want to admit it back then, being engaged and all, but I felt like we had a brief moment where something felt...familiar. Of course I ignored it mostly, but I thought about how it felt having you come back to see me the year after we'd broken up, trying to rekindle that lost love.

Well and then I saw Carmen Tibedeaux and I started to think about the new opportunity for Nyada and I just poured my heart, more comfortably mind you, into how badly I wanted to rekindle that second chance. I guess I've needed a lot of second chances. I never would have owned up to it at the time, but I was thinking about you up on that stage. My eyes even landed on you once, before I saw her.

The song made me think about how every time I saw you again, I just kept getting reminded how much I loved you, but that it ultimately wasn't going to matter anymore.

I guess that's why I ran off after talking to Tibedeaux without finding you and saying goodbye. It was just... too much.

I know I hurt you when I said that. It wasn't entirely the truth, I just didn't know how to put myself out there. And to be fair, I wasn't entirely sure who I wanted to sing it to or about. It was a pretty confused Rachel Berry that you saw up on stage that day.

If it helps, about two weeks after you met me in the dressing room of Funny Girl, it hit me on stage that I was thinking about you. And it's you I sing every love song to now and your face that I picture up on stage. I love you, I want you to know that. If I'd have been at Carmel, you never would have questioned that. But no, I probably needed McKinley and everyone in New Directions to keep me grounded in reality. I would have been terrible if my inner diva had been allowed free rein.

I get that now. I promise. And I... I hope you know that I never take for granted how fortunate I am that you did come back to me. That you still love me after all this time. I love all of you.
