Space Opera refers to works set in a spacefaring civilization, usually set in the far future or A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far Far Away.... Technology is ubiquitous and secondary to the story. Space opera has an epic character to it: the universe is big, there are usually many sprawling civilizations and empires, there are political conflicts and intrigue.

1. Slice of Spacefaring Life
It's life, but on a spaceship! An interstellar journey could take hundreds of years, so you have some time to relax and take it easy. Do a little aeroponic gardening, enjoy stargazing from the bar, or immerse yourself in studying the latest nebula you're passing through.

2. R&R
After being cooped up for days, weeks, or years, you and the crew are finally sliding into the nearest space station, colony, or commercial hub for a little break. Enjoy shopping, restaurants, and resorts!

3. Space Piracy
You're a bit of a rogue, but you like the independent life cruising among the stars and taking whatever you can find.

4. Sleeper Ship
You're on a very long journey, so long that most if not all of the crew have been put on ice for the journey. Whether by accident or design, you're awake - is anyone else up?

5. Emergency!
Something has gone wrong! Your colony is under attack, or maybe the hull of your ship has been blown out by a passing asteroid. Can you repair the warp drive in time?!

6. Arrival
At long last, solid ground! Get out there, you have a new planet and maybe even a new civilization to explore.

A meeting of species for the first time in history, or perhaps just your first experience running into an alien or a colonist.

[HOT DAMN let's do this. Jamie's a robot pilot, tactician, mechanic and all-around tech nerd. He's fourteen or so, but I can age him up if you'd rather not have an Actual Child on your space crew. No 9 for this one, and he'd make a very reluctant 2 if at all. He also lives on a non-Earth planet full of giant robot animals, if you'd like to come visit.

How about being one of the heads of the five Tytania family branch and often being sent by the head of the clan for diplomatic missions to 'pacify' their territory. This is a diplomat with his own fleet of armed and battle-worthy space ships. As the real power behind the throne, the Tytania clan makes their own rules and theirs could be nearly unthinkable for most. Example, Jouslain's fellow head of family once carpet-bombed miles around a planet's Presidential office out of spite but he only received a slap on the wrist.

[I'd be up for him being an AU where he's some sort of shapeshifting alien species. I'd be most interested in 7, with him as the alien species, but I'd also be interested in 1, 4, 5 or 6. He was very fascinated by the idea of space in canon, so it would be fun to play with that.]
