Well, they make you want to be a better person. This desire could have been a gradual realization, or you could have suddenly decided one day to improve. In the same vein, you may want a complete overhaul, yet you could also be more realistic and try to work on one thing. Still, you know that you're the only one who can change yourself.

How is that going? It can't be easy, as old habits die hard. Do you have a supportive loved one — or someone who wants nothing to do with you, no matter how much you improve?

[ while alexiel is definitely messed up, she works better with the "changing others" role. not a conventional fluffy approach because, unless your character is a child or is very mentally fragile/insane (she will have a soft spot), she can be merciless and scathing to push them to improve. she's absolutely loving underneath and cares intensely for everyone, but she has a lot of baggage and has a kid-gloves-off approach to things. she is adept in piercing masks. gen/platonic interaction is welcome. ]

[Ever since learning about Kyoko's past, Mirai has been doing her best to smile around her and trying to cheer her up whenever she could. There were days that she didn't have to force that usual smile of hers, but more than anything, she just wanted Kyoko to be happy. There was something about her tale that resonated so closely with her own. The feeling of helplessness and desire to do something about it. The lack of food was just another thing that she knew all too well.

Kyoko had closed herself up behind a wall to guard herself against the outside dangers. To others, she might have seemed cold but that wasn't how Mirai saw it; Not when she understood how painful it was to open up about what's happened to you to others.

'You'll only make them sad if you tell them. Don't make people worry about you.'

It was hard a lot of the time. It was hard to pretend that everything was okay. It was hard to keep faith that she could save her home, but she knew if she faltered for even a moment, it was all over. She couldn't do it. She couldn't let herself give up on her hopes for her world. It didn't matter how naive she seemed or how much she fooled herself into thinking she wasn't broken herself. This was all she had left.

And more importantly, she wasn't alone anymore. That was the hardest thing to register. She needed to push down her own feelings about life to make sure that Kyoko didn't die on her too. Not when Mirai spent so long all alone.]

[ It isn't like she'd made a conscious decision to change. She hadn't wanted to. Honestly, it had ticked her off to see some dumb kid playing at being a hero of justice. It's not like the world would thank her - even if it did, it would abandon her in the long run. It's not like the universe would be kind to her - even if it was, it would only be so that it could yank the rug out from under her feet later. It was something she couldn't stand to see. It was something that she hated. Infuriating, unforgivable, and she would never stand for it.

But slowly, the frost had melted, and her words and actions had softened. Kyoko understands now; she still can't be a hero. As she is now, she's beyond redemption, and no amount of pretending will allow her to reclaim the ideals that she shed so long ago.

But... She's started to hope that this girl can be different. That she can have a different future. Even if Kyoko was a monster, even if she became a witch... If Mirai were able to live, if she were able to prove her wrong... She thinks that might not be enough. It might be enough for her to be able to just protect one single person.

It might be enough for her to be loved, even by just one single person.

So slowly, some of the bad habits lifted. She would still pick stupid fights, seemed to have no qualms about petty theft. She was rude, and brash, and defensive. But... She was happy to be with someone, and she'd come to accept being cared for. If she didn't have to steal, she wouldn't, she decided.

And she'd started being a little more honest. A little more thoughtful.

Today that meant dragging Mirai to the arcade. DDR and retro arcade games and all sorts of colorful attractions meant to take her mind off it. A fun day, one where neither of them should have to worry. A day when they can just be normal teenage girls, messing around and complaining about losses and treating mundane, no-stakes attractions like a giant spectacle.

Now she stops in front of a crane game filled with cute, colorful plushes and sticks her index finger up against the glass. Fortunate timing, given that she'd just been bragging about her mastery of them. ]

Ah! Here, I can show you what I mean. Go ahead, pick out whichever one you want and I'll get it for ya.

[Kyoko wasn't wrong there. In the end, all her world brought her was death and despair. But how could she consciously just... give up? Even if she had given up on trying, what good would that do her when she would still have to fight to survive. Maybe it was better that she just... gave up? Maybe, but she couldn't bring herself to do it.

Mirai could never think of Kyoko as a monster. Not when she understood what it was like. In what others found as possibly cold and unforgiving, Mirai found as warm and comforting. She'd seen who Kyoko really was beyond the wall she put up. It was clear that she had a lot of opinions... Maybe some that Mirai didn't always agree with herself? But she valued Kyoko's blunt honesty. She appreciated why she acted the way she did because deep down she knew that Kyoko cared in her own way. Finding people who really cared about Mirai was hard enough, so she learned to treasure it when she found someone who did.

Admittedly Mirai hadn't had much experience with modern technology, or anything fun really. So Mirai had always enjoyed visiting these kinds of places with Kyoko. There were so many new experiences for her and what better than to do them with someone you cared about? Normal was not really something that Mirai knew, so any moment where neither of them had to worry about the impending doom and gloom was welcomed. Peering into the glass at all of the plushes..]

Wow! They're all so cute! [She may have had a small collection of plushes by now. Pointing to a penguin plush...] How about that one?

That one, huh? Okay, I'll get it in one!

[ Though unfortunately, she can't quite get it in one. The toy is tucked between a couple others, and it takes her a few tries (and a few curses, and a few complaints about how she totally had it and this is stupid,) but in the end she's taking a cute, colorful penguin plush out of the machine's vending slot and handing it to Mirai.

Her mood shifts from irritation to pride with just that, puffing out her chest a little. ]

See? I told you I'd get it! ... Ah, do you want to try? You can win me a matching one.

[Even if it took her a few tries, Mirai didn't mind. Eventually, she ended up victorious. And now she's holding the cute plush with a bright smile.]

Thank you very much. You did great! Do you think I'd be able to?

[Setting down the plush for the time being to give it a try. It seemed easy enough, but the claw slipping from the plush's head constantly proved to be more challenging than she thought it would be.]

This is... a lot more difficult than it looks. You made it look so easy.

He’s one of the more morally grey poke-rivals, with a cynical worldview and ends-justifies-the-means mindset, but he also genuinely likes to help others... even if he isn’t exactly the most approachable. He’s already turning a new leaf in canon, so he might also help inspire a change!]
