It's one thing to be in a relationship with someone; it's another beast entirely to be on the exact same page, the same wavelength as them, almost like you're the same person - two halves to a whole. As far as the two of you go, you're both. Maybe being in a romantic relationship may be anathema, but you don't care. This is just another way for you to be completely in sync.

Force & Calm: Every yin needs a yang. Power is nice, but you can't just turn yours off, you have to have someone - a very specific someone - defuse you.
Healer & Fighter: Violence has the nasty habit of often causing injury. It's beneficial to have your own personal medic around.
Brain & Brawn: Point them in the right direction and they'll destroy everything in your path.
Powers Intertwined: Your ability requires the ability of the other person to work correctly.
Weapon: If someone has to use you, it might as well be them.
Shared Trauma: No one understands what you've been through except them, because your past is the same.
Telepathically Connected: You're of the same mind, quite literally.
Team Mates: Some people just work better together, and out of your big team, you two work seamlessly as a subunit.
Part of Each Other: There's a part of them that lives in you, whatever that may be. It's hard to stay away when that lost piece is constantly calling out.
Tragedy: When your other half is in danger of being taken away, what will you do?
I was thinking either 7 or 9, and that they reconnect after Jerry escapes the institute? I barely remember Toward the Terra at this point though, forgive me I'm old
[ He doesn't think he knows what a nightmare actually entails, but he's in a haze where he's surrounded by a whole lot of Wrong, with flashes of red and sirens blaring over panic-induced staff members. They're screaming, for the most part, and at first, Jerry doesn't know why. Is that the reason he's not panicking with them? He's been taught to take it slow and drugged to believe it.
Someone finally grabs him to help him escape, and Jerry acts like he's more concerned about running into a wall than getting crushed by the ceiling. Behind him, over the screams and the sirens, something gargantuan wakes up with a growl that crawls under his skin. Jerry gets a hum in his head, like an angry purr, but it also sounds like boiling water, but also like a sharp thud in a cave — (What does something sound like when it's in a cave? It must be different. He wouldn't have thought of it otherwise.)
He loses the grip and shuts his eyes tight, pressing his lips together to try and keep his stomach under control. His bones suddenly feel like stone, so why can't he stop shaking?
—
When he wakes up, he finds the sun coming up behind the horizon. Just like in the movies. It makes him smile. He never gets to see the sun rise; he always sleeps in a windowless room. So did Blue, red eyes closing when he wished Jerry a good night. The color of his hair was unique. He isn't here right now. No one is. This doesn't feel right.
But the pills must be working, because his hands aren't shaking anymore. It's only when he sits up and takes a look at his clothes that he sees them covered in dirt and ash, and dark, crisp stains, like he spilled something from the inside out. He can't begin to guess why the Strangers would ever let him go to sleep like this, or why they'd let him do so outside. One after the other, more senses click-clack in: an assortment of smells, none of them particularly pleasant, and the sound of ... nothing. But a nothing that used to be something.
So, it looks like the Institute burned down.
This is what reality feels like. Super reality. The kind that knocks down a wall to reveal a room in your own home that you never knew was there. That makes him wish someone really was around; someone to hold his hand and show him which hall went to the room with his medication while the sirens blared and a monster escaped its cell underground. Whatever happened to that Stranger? She seemed very concerned that he'd lose control.
Which he did. He knows he did. Super reality flares up, and the memory of his roommate is a void, an absence that feels heavier than when they touched. Missing him is making Jerry shake again, so before he can get sick, he searches for Blue with the sun opening its eye behind him. ]
[the span of time between the mounting sense of dread and fallout was so brief -- Blue hadn't had the chance to understand it, let alone warn his roommate. the tidal wave of panic, compounded by the daggers of minds in pain knocked the breath of him, had him doubling over in bed, immobilized as one would be in sleep paralysis.
best he could do was try to impress one clear thought outward from himself:] RUN. [the only other thing he could do was brace himself and pray he could endure until it was over, whatever it was.
once infrastructure has ceased to collapsed, falling away from the bubbled barrier surrounding him, it flickers and fades, and the timing is such that the disruption of debris sounds off just as Jerry begins to think to look for him.]
[ It's totally cool if you're no longer feelin it okok ]
[ With pain and exhaustion, Jerry's harsh breaths go silent when he shuts his eyes, listening in for the direction, the feeling of being Blue. The final crash is what makes him open his eyes again, mouth parted, and he runs back to the voice that told him to run away. Anxiety starts to outweigh his hope that he'll be awake, but until he gets an answer, he'll keep trying:
Blue? Can you see where I am? Do you remember the path? ]
[lucidity is weird for psionics, because while one is alive, the brain never stops. and a sense so intrinsically tied to the brain can't, itself, ever stop as well, right? so while Blue may be indeed unconscious, that psionic sense of his can never be, and it's what can pick up the searching call of Jerry's own sense.
while not able to provide sensible, conscious thought without the threat of confusing dream-logic distorting it, Blue can light a path - make a tether of sorts, from where he can reach Jerry's own searching mind back to himself amidst the crumbled structure.
it can't account for any of the hazards of shifty surfaces along the way, but it appears nonetheless as a glowing link, almost like a chain he can follow down to where he lay.]
[ The link slips further away the closer he gets, urging him forward with no room to look back. His trek is delayed by the obstacles of a quickly deteriorating facility, holes in the ground where he thought there should be nothing underneath, things that should be unbreakable cracking and breaking off, lights dangerously flickering on and off while others drone on undisturbed.
Jerry is tired, panting, when he sees the familiar numbers of their rooms. ]
[now that he's closer, Blue can rouse himself just enough to open his eyes. it's hard to parse the scene around him, with the way the room's been fragmented and lights made unreliable.
but Jerry's presence is steady from its distance. and he shouldn't be here.]
