[ Most days, Dark can handle his work. Traversing the city at night to slay the demons that creep through the shadows isn't the kind of job that earns you much appreciation, because the best payoff of a job well done is that no one knows the work was ever done. On an average night he'll run into maybe half a dozen lesser demons - sometimes, one or two among them is a bigger customer. Tonight, there were eight - all far larger than the norm, as if they had been hoping to use this opportunity to overwhelm him.

They nearly did. But only nearly.

He lacks the energy to make it back home, but by a miraculous stroke of luck the battle took place not far from someone else's place - Aoba, one of the only people in the entire city who knows what he does and who helps him get it done. It's why, shortly after midnight, she'll hear him thudding his fist dully against her door, why she'll find him half-slumped against the wall when she opens it, eyes struggling to stay open. He isn't wounded terribly - a nasty cut on his shoulder is the worst of it - but he's very clearly drained.

That, too, he hopes she can help him with. ]
