It is a minor miracle that the uproar over the snow resolves into acceptance of Mr. Weston's kind offer of accommodations, heading off the panicked stampede towards the door and the carriages. There are rooms for all of them, and there is still another course and dessert besides, and had they all not hoped to spend some time in the parlor, had Emma not brought her music and had not Mrs. Weston prepared some song to accompany her?

(Emma is surely the only reason any of it sways Mr. Woodhouse. Perry arrives shortly thereafter, assuaging any last doubts.)

And it is a pleasant enough way to spend the holiday evening, even allow for Mr. Elton's presence.

Eventually, the ladies excuse themselves to their chambers. Mr. Woodhouse and Perry go up shortly thereafter, with Mr. Woodhouse's exaltations about drafts and sudden chills trailing into quiet. For a time conversation carries on, before Mr. Elton has to be nudged awake. No one mentions how much he has had to drink this evening, and Mr. Weston herds him up the stairs, jovial to the last.

It is the pair of Knightleys for a time in front of the fire, with a last bottle between them. There is a meandering conversation about the Abbey, the tenants, about London and Isabelle and the children. All John's edges soften, due to the hour or the drink or because once they wind past the exhausted recitation of what it is to have so many children, John has the space to recount the good in his life, and Knightley is happy to hear it.

Even if it means shortly thereafter John ascends the stairs, and Knightley is the one left in the darkening house in front of the fire with what's left of the bottle and a cup in his hand. He will go up soon too, and is considering it when he hears footsteps over the threshhold.

"Don't tell me you've been put out—" is the first thing said, all humor, as Knightley turns in his seat expecting his brother, though all breaks off as he sees—

"Emma?" Knightley questions. "Oughtn't you be asleep already?"

It's very late, is very close at hand, though surely it doesn't need to be pointed out to her.

And speaking of problems, this weird planet they're on now has mistletoe up in the summer. Mistletoe that they're stuck standing under because of course. She gives a laugh and rolls her eyes, semi-amused by the antics.]

The mere fact that it was Prinz Eugen that was stuck with her said wonders about even the smallest doubt. Yet there she was, just cheekily smiling away at Sofia like this was just one of those happy accidents that she just really wanted to take advantage of.

So instead of going for Sofia's mouth and ending what she knew had to be a miserable state of affairs for her, she simply pressed up against the other girl, almost demanding that she be the one to break the mistletoe's nonsense herself.]
