[ It's a day like any other in Hinamizawa when Briar realizes she's in love with Rena Ryugu.

Nothing special happens, not really – nothing any more special than any other day since she'd transferred here a year ago. It's strange, just how quickly she's gotten used to the relative quiet and stillness of Hinamizawa but compared to the noise and bustle of the cities, the sleepy little town is... nice.

It's not as though her days are boring, of course – Rena and the other members of the club make sure of that. They spend their time after school talking and playing games and running around and laughing until her stomach hurts, and there's something about it that makes Briar feel quiet and warm on the inside, like slipping halfway into a pleasant doze.

And it's a day like any one of those other days when she and Rena happen to be walking home alone, talking about everything and nothing when– Briar isn't even really sure what happens. Maybe nothing at all happens. But the vivid orange light of the setting sun catches off Rena's hair and she has a floaty half-formed thought about how bright Rena looks against the darkening sky and how she wouldn't mind looking at her forever.

The thought pops like a soap bubble the moment she tries to consider it any further but the realization stays firmly rooted, even if Briar can't bring herself to put words to it yet. She's shocked she even manages to keep a straight face the rest of the way home.

She wrestles with the idea for a few weeks. If she said something... she doesn't think Rena would be cruel. That isn't like Rena at all. She doesn't know if Rena would say yes, but even in a rejection, she knows Rena would be kind, because that's who Rena is. But if Briar were to say something... and it were to change things, and these days-where-nothing-happens were to come to an end, she's not sure she'd be able to handle that.

It takes another few weeks for her to even get the opportunity. Usually she and Rena aren't alone on their walk home, but today's one of the occasions where Mion has been called way for some family matter or other, so it's just her and Rena and the higurashi singing away as they make their way home. She doesn't mean to say anything, but her feelings are swelling up so big in her chest that they feel like they're compressing her lungs and pushing the words out of her mouth before she can stop them. ]

Hey... Rena? [ She pipes up, after a period of uncharacteristically brooding silence and her tone is hesitant. ] Can I ask you something that might be a little out of the blue?
