The fact that you're in a relationship with this person isn't public knowledge. Actually, no one knows about it except for the people involved. Maybe you guys are just private like that; on the other hand, it may be a necessity to keep things a secret from others. Maybe you're both teammates, and others on the team would give you grief, or you're not supposed to be dating, or you're not the type to usually date and you're only testing the waters. Perhaps it's the combination of you two, possibly an odd couple, that would bring some controversy or some teasing. Or, you know, you could not want to deal with friends and relatives being busybodies. Your reasons are your own.

Are you content with stealing moments to be together as a couple? Do you want to make your relationship known and the fact that you can't drives you batty? Remember, there are lots of benefits to dating in secret. You can be yourselves completely, away from prying eyes, and get to know each other better as potential long-term romantic partners. In a way, it's ideal.

[From the start, it was almost too obvious that Aether had a special fondness for Mondstadt's Cavalry Captain.

Not that he's alone in that regard. Oh, sure, Kaeya doesn't have girls besotted with him at every turn — like poor Donna, for instance, who is constantly sighing over the loving and gentle Master Diluc that only exists in her imagination — and perhaps people have indeed told him, in the past, that his charm is fake. But there are certainly plenty of people in the city of Mondstadt who genuinely admire their sterling, rakish Sir Kaeya!

...It's just a little surprising that their enigmatic Honorary Knight is one of them. Aether tries to be subtle, of course; he usually parries Kaeya's various intimations and flirtations with his own deadpan banter, so it's not as though the traveler turns into some kind of stuttering, stumbling wreck whenever Kaeya is around. But he's always curious, always looking. Always staring at Kaeya with an expression on his face that suggests he wants something, but every time he's caught, he only turns away, as if he's not willing to have to ask for whatever it is he's hoping to get.

It's curious, really. Almost a mystery, in its own way. If it were just about looks, or presence — in other words, if Aether were simply attracted to handsome men, surely he might at least blush a little around Master Diluc, or spare more than a passing glance for young Albedo, who almost everyone agrees is remarkably good-looking? What is it about Kaeya specifically that's captured Aether's interest? His eyepatch? His low-cut shirts? The four-pointed star in his iris? Or something beyond that?

Maybe Kaeya's serious. Maybe he isn't. Maybe this is, for him, just a passing fling, a momentary interest. One way or another, their facetious flirting has given way to shared time together. Special, stolen moments in the alleyways of Mondstadt. Occasional hand-holding. It would resemble a relationship if not for this: Aether gave Kaeya a condition to have his company.

Only if we don't tell anybody else.

Well, fine by Kaeya, probably, who seems to relish secrets just as much as he relishes wine. But again, like everything else, why? Is it just that Aether likes his privacy, or is there something else? Whose judgment is he hiding from? Amber’s, perhaps? Paimon’s? Acting Grand Master Jean? Or someone closer to home, like the sister he's searching for?

Aether's never said. And besides, at the moment, the traveler seems quite happy to just stay lying in bed alongside Kaeya, reading a book while lying on his side, Kaeya's arm thrown over his waist. They've been spooning for a while now in the pocket dimension of Aether's mysterious Serenitea Pot (Kaeya as the big spoon, of course, not that Aether isn't prone to being assertive on occasion) — nothing and no one from the outside world to disturb the two of them, at least for now. One of their mutual friends might stop by at any moment, but if that happens, Tubby will presumably send word.

Kaeya's thumb brushes along Aether's exposed side, making the Honorary Knight squirm, his bare toes curling underneath the sheets. He doesn't turn around, though.]

[The book he's reading isn't particularly special. The Mondstadt Tower. The traveler seems engrossed in it, though; Kaeya might be able to read it over his shoulder. In the time of the aristocrats, there stood a high tower in Mondstadt's plaza. It was built to honor Barbatos the Anemo Archon in name, yet in reality it was nothing more than a flamboyant display of wealth and power by the royal to gloat over the commoners...]
