The Long Distance Meme

Whether it's a temporary parting or your entire relationship has played out through letters and late-night text messages, being separated from your sweetie is never fun. Friends and family might shake their heads and encourage you to look closer to home, but you know this person is worth the wait.

Fortunately, there are certain ways you can ease the pain of loneliness. Messages, letters, phone calls, video chats, sweet but fleeting reunions... made all the more intense by the distance between you. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, after all...

[Duty on long-range missions was less than palatable these days. Duty was duty, true, but he had reason to want to be back with the fleet. It took several weeks to even get the long-range recon base set up enough to get holos working. But when it does, he immediately records one for her.]

Hello, Beautiful.

Well, you know how it is, can't say where I am, except for the fact that the word 'far' can describe it up and down. But at least we're getting private holo time now, so I can send messages at least. Give it a few weeks, we might even get to speak 'live', though Force only knows what the time differences will be.

[He smiles]

You may be happy to know that you're quite missed. Mainly because nothing teaches how much someone means quite like absence.

And given the maintenance help we're getting out here...I've got basically every reason to miss you.

We'll talk soon, hopefully. Can't wait to see you again, Rose.

[And the image winks out.]

[The radio silence is the worst part. But then, it always is, and no matter how many times Rose can try to convince herself that she's used it, that doesn't make the waiting any easier.

Thank goodness that there's plenty of work that needs to be done that keeps her mind temporarily away from familiar worries. She tries her best not to think the worst, but it is painfully difficult when there's a galaxy at war and one (of a few) people she cares deeply about is smack dab in the middle of it.

Thankfully, a message eventually arrives and sets some of Rose's fear at ease. It's clearly the wee hours when she records a reply, her hair a disheveled mess, her clothes sleep-rumpled. There is a longing in her smile, but she thinks she's managed to keep herself together admirably well.]

Hey, stranger. It's good to hear your voice and see your smile. I'm sure you know it'll be so much better if and when we're able to actually speak, but this'll do for now.

[She smiles, too, and shrugs one shoulder gently.]

You look good, but what else is new? I think it probably goes without saying, but I miss seeing you in person. I don't know when you'll be back, but I hope it's soon. And soon can't come soon enough!

At the very least, you'll receive some competent maintenance and mechanic assistance. I don't know who might be listening in, so I'll refrain from mentioning all the other things I want to do once I steal you away, but I think those details go without saying, too.

[She waves, then blows a kiss, and the message ends.]

[The next reply, thankfully, takes only two days to get her - some clever hat in the technical section bouncing signals off of older HoloNet routes which would be thoroughly illegal if anybody cared.]

[He's smiling, at least, though it looks like he hasn't gotten much sleep. Long-range missions of any sort mean sleeping in hyperspace jumps.]

Hey, you. How is it you always manage to look so pretty? It's definitely the eyes, but it's also definitely everything else.

I'm prohibited from saying when I'll be back - and a lot of the snubjockeys think I'm making it all up about being at Yavin and Endor. Until we really got flying, at least.

[That much brings a grin.]

I will say that the adjustments you made are keeping half my systems at plus-five percent over spec; though the local mechanics aren't happy I won't let them take any out.

The locals in general are happy to see us, if a bit wary. But they also helped me find a gift I hope makes its way back to you sooner rather than never.

[That gift being another week out - but it's a bolt of a beautiful, silken fabric in her favorite color, which ripples like a cascade in the right light.]

I'm sure you'll figure out a use for it. It just seemed like it belonged with you. But I have to get some sleep so I can keep up with the kids. I'll talk to you soon.

[The image fades out, both hands blowing a kiss in return.]

[Two days is not so bad, all things considered. This time around, Rose waits to reply until she's done with her duties and she can beg off from spending time with some friends for a while. (She'll find them when she's finished, when she's feeling a bit melancholy and doesn't want to be alone, when the weight of the distance weighs her down a bit more heavily than usual.)

She looks comfortable, a bit unbuttoned, but not nearly as disheveled as the last message.]

Hi, my favorite sweet talker. Looking a little tired there, maybe you should hurry home, 'cause I've got a bunk with your name it. [She chuckles, shrugging one shoulder slightly.] I don't really know how comfortable it'll be once I'm laying all over you, but I guess we'll find out.

[Rose understands why Wedge can't give her any real idea as to when he'll be back, and it's difficult to continue waiting, but she doesn't really let it show in her expression. She just laughs at the thought of he and the others really proving their mettle and showing off exactly who they are.]

I'm sure you shut them up real quick. And don't you dare let anybody tinker with anything I've already adjusted. They're exactly where they need to be, and I don't need anyone mucking your systems up if I'm not there to fix 'em.

[Her expression softens again as he mentions the locals and a gift, which she hasn't been expecting but now wants to receive as soon as possible because - whatever it is - it's from Wedge and that means the world to her.]

I love it already, whatever it is. And I will thank you properly when you are here and available for me to lavish attention upon.

Get that rest. Fly well and be safe.

[Rose laughs, reaches out and pretends to catch the kisses before mirroring blowing one his way.]

[The next one takes a little longer - and he looks a bit tired when it comes on.]

I keep thinking about you, and the idea of getting back together and...yeah, it keeps a fella warm at night.

[He rubs the back of his neck, smiling.]

You're definitely one to come back to. And I'm going to do my best with getting that rest - and I've got very little time, this time around. But know that I'm thinking about you. Missing you.

And can't wait until I get back.

[It's been a day.

Granted, every day that Griffith gets it in his head to cause trouble is trying, but he's really been ramping up his efforts to get Ryan and the girl he's been chatting with so often to meet up. "It's been months and you've never even seen her face!", "She wants something and she's waiting for the right moment to scam you", "But it's your birthday in a couple of weeks, at this rate you'll be a 30-year-old virgin" and so on. In Ryan's opinion, the only argument that has any merit at all is that she might be trying to con him somehow.

But even if she is, he doesn't particularly care. It's been nice having someone to talk to, and that's something they can do without any risk. She seems lonely too, so as long as she doesn't start asking for money or information she'd need for ID theft, he's content.

Ryan isn't the type to be on the phone while he drives, so it's approaching midnight when he's finally home and able to communicate. He just sends a text message, not wanting to wake her if she's asleep.]

Sorry it's so late. Griffith was being a pain today.

[ Well his friend is right on the money: she wants something. He's wrong about the nature of what she wants, though. No scam, nothing of the sort. Only love. He's also right when it comes to it being strange that she doesn't want to meet him. But that's for reasons he couldn't even begin to suspect. It's not like she can just go and project herself into the real world. If only...

Still, she replies nigh immediately when he writes to her. That's another weird thing. How she appears to nearly always be online. No matter when he writes, she'll reply within moments. But clearly she's not a bot or even multiple people doing a prank, she's too consistent for that. ]
