Ah, rain—the precipitation that the whole world has a love/hate affair with. It waters the garden for free and ruins baseball games. It cools you off in the summer and it causes more ice and sleet to appear in the winter. Sometimes it is lovely and falls at a decent pace for a few hours, other times, it blasts the whole eastern seaboard away.

Poems and songs have been written about it, people have danced in it, others have cursed its entire existence, and still more refuse to go out and drive in it.

Now it’s time to roll some dice and see what the weather will have in store for you today.

2. MONSOON ☂ It’s horrible and awful! Rain is coming down in buckets, no one can get anywhere, the wind is whipping everything about, and now the cable is out.

3. SHOWER ☂ Reminds you of early spring, doesn’t it? A nice shower to make everything all green and smell fresh again. Lovely.

4. FLOOD ☂ While rain is good, it can sometimes be bad. Grab a boat!

5. CATS & DOGS ☂ You’re lucky with this one. It’s not the worst storm in the world, but it’s still pretty heavy. Be careful when driving!

6. SUDDEN STORM ☂ It might have been predicted, but sometimes storms just sweep in and do their thing with little to no warning. Hope you’re not outside.

7. THUNDER & LIGHTNING ☂ Loud, surprising, scary, ominous, comforting, fantastic to watch or listen to… some like thunder and lightning, others not so much. Of course, if this happens before a big confrontation, the universe is telling you something.

8. CAN’T GET WORSE ☂ You did not say that. You did not just say that. How many times does this need to be seen in movies and books before anyone learns?

9. STUCK ☂ No, no, no, no. This cannot be happening. What happened to the ten percent chance of rain? You forgot your umbrella and now you’re stuck in it!

10. RUINED PLANS ☂ You had all these wonderful plans to go outside, have some fun in the sunshine, do some errands, maybe a date… and the weather goes against them.

11. DANCING ☂ Sometimes rain is a cause for celebration, or you just feel like doing something spontaneous. Grab someone to join you and get wet!

12. RAIN BATTLE ☂ The most intense, important battles happen in the rain. Verbal spars, punching someone in the guts; it’s all dramatic and climatic. And no one slips.

( not a problem at all! i just recently started writing yugi, so hopefully it isn't a disappointment! it's also the atems fault ahem )

[ Yugi stands at the edge of the awning to the cafe, purple eyes looking up at the rain that seems as if it's never relenting. He sighs, looking at his phone at the time cause hell yeah modern tech. So much for going out and enjoying a rare Sunday to himself and possibly the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle. Usually there is one of his friends over, or Grandpa needs help in the shop. Today is one of the rare days he had decided to go out and simply enjoy a day without mystical interference day from Ancient Egyptian items.

He scrolls through the news on the phone. It might just be a better idea to head home. ]

[seto kaiba rarely, if ever, traveled alone. and he rarely, if ever, hit the streets on foot. he had an entire fleet of vehicles, some of which he even drove himself; there wasn't any need to walk, not that he couldn't. he just didn't. but isono was late and mokuba had wanted some obscure trinket downtown so these were truly unique circumstances.

a not so unique circumstance: running into the insufferable yugi for the million time.

unfortunately for yugi, by the time kaiba spotted him, it was already too late. he hastens his pace to catch up, not that it was hard, and then he muscles right beside him. a little like a predator checking out its next meal or a bully scoping out his next target, although as usual his stoic features and sharp eyes give nothing away.]

[ it's a bit more than surprising to see kaiba without a car, or isono. in fact, the last time he'd seen anything like that is back when kaiba actually went to school with them. well... no the car was always there, but, it didn't seem as unusual when the man who has a whole foot of height on him was dressed in the same school uniform.

he cranes his head back to look at him, but, gives a smile anyways. he sees kaiba as one of their friends.

though he does look slightly annoyed at the 'runt' comment. ]

I'm not going to fall over because of a breeze, you know. [ maybe -- depends on the breeze. ] What brings you here? I figured you were usually too busy to have a free Sunday afternoon.

[without a car, without isono, yet he seems right at home in the rain. even if he sounds dry as dry could be.]

Just a monsoon.

[at the question, he lifts up his free hand -- holding a small bag with a logo emblazoned from a local store. a toy store, in fact. it was fair to question his schedule; kaiba was the most infamous workaholic in town, even on the weekends. but he does look oddly relaxed here, enough that he doesn't mind chatting while he waits.]

Model kits for Mokuba. He goes crazy for this stuff and they don't always ship.

[he may or may not have picked up a kit for himself. but he'll leave that part out.]

[ he looks at the bag (perfectly at eye level ironically enough). there is a realization that crosses him then. yugi can't help but smile at the quiet notion of how far seto kaiba goes for his little brother -- even for this. ]

He probably has ton of models over his room. Does he paint them himself too?

[ ah, yugi. always looking for the joy and fun in any sort of hobby.

not that kaiba really needs it, but, yugi nods in a silent approval. it's good to see the taller man's heart shine every now and then. ]

[kaiba nods. and he almost, almost looks and sounds polite. getting him to talk about his brother was always the best way to soften him up.]

Yeah. He's really good at it too. He may not be much of a duelist, but he makes up for it in other ways.

[and he's very, very proud of that. he may have been ornery, but at this stage in their relationship, he doesn't feel the need to hide a whole lot from yugi. he's seen so much already, it'd be awfully silly to act as though he hates him. he's still annoyed by him, of course. but for once, at least for today, he doesn't pester him.]

What were you doing here anyway? Doesn't that old man usually pressure you into indentured servitude?

the question makes him sigh a bit, eying the rain from beyond the awning. well, there's no point in really lying to kaiba. he'd probably figure it out, and, yugi isn't someone who lies much anyways. he's so incredibly honest that it could be a negative. ]

Everyone needs some time by themselves. I was hoping to just walk around downtown and see what caught my eye. [ then, well, the rain.

not to mention he isn't ever really alone thanks to the millennium puzzle. ]

You know, I might take over that shop one day, Kaiba.

the rain doesn't appear to be letting up, which was unusual for their neck of the woods but a nuisance nonetheless. as a familiar limo pulls up to the curb, his eyes flicker from the door to yugi. if he wanted to tool around in terrible weather, that was his business, but...]

Did you want a ride? Or do you need to ask your babysitter for permission?

[three guesses who he meant by babysitter. stupid pharaoh.]

he looks over at the limo as it pulls up. same as ever. not that it would be smart to ride a motorcycle in this weather. it might also be a little bit of a statement that the rich seto kaiba shows up to buy models at the local toy store. yugi can only imagine the bragging points that must get someone.

then, yugi looks back up at him with a mild expression of surprise. wait--really? ]

He's not my babysitter! [ kaiba please. ] I mean, I wouldn't mind. It's better than going home soaking wet.

[isono emerges from the limo and bows to yugi. his boss may not have been grateful for all he had done, but he was polite and proper. kaiba just huffs in contrast.]

Don't encourage him.

[opening the door, isono ushers both men inside. kaiba slides to the far end and sets his purchases down; he waits for yugi and watches him with curious eyes. and despite his seemingly sour attitude, his body language was relaxed. the pharaoh would have been the first one to note it was far from unfriendly. one might even say it was companionable.

but kaiba would never admit to that. pride was paramount, as always, as ever.]

Isono will drop you off afterward. Hope you don't mind.

[ ! oh. yugi bows quickly in return to isono. a thank you and a way to say that really, isono doesn't need to. it's fine.

yugi quickly hops in, taking the seat nearest to him. he fights the urge to reach up and shake his hair dry. it'd be rude to the man that offered the ride to him... as well as a little embarrassing. instead, he just smiles in thanks to isono. ]

Oh--no, that's fine. You probably have something to get back to anyways.

[ he isn't going to pretend to understand how huge million dollar companies work. though, he does realize they don't talk much outside of tournaments. is there really a lot that the two know about one another outside of those moments...? other than the obvious things like social standing, home life, and social circles. ]

Kaiba... do you play any other games outside of Duel Monsters?

[kaiba actually laughs a little. all years later and he still can't get over that ridiculous hair.]

Not really. Mokuba made me take the day off, so I guess you could say I have a pretty tough boss.

[another casual statement, another not so subtle indication that kaiba was comfortable around yugi. perhaps more so than anyone else, outside his own brother.

as the limo goes rolling towards their destination, his attention remains on yugi. no, they don't talk much. kaiba makes a point of avoiding it. and he honestly would've preferred to head home alone, but yugi honestly looked too pathetic out in the rain. so he chalks it up to rescuing some poor animal and justifies it that way.]

Haven't you been to the arcade? Half the high scores are mine.

[and those were from forever ago, a testament to his prowess -- that no one managed to beat them.]

Outside of that, I like games of skill. Chess, mostly. And I playtest most of our products.

well, yugi is grateful for the ride anyways. even if they'll be back to being rivals once the ride is over. he'll keep it a secret though. he wouldn't want to ruin kaiba's image of being a hardass to everyone around him. ]

I don't usually go to the arcades.

[ it's more about board games and puzzles. though, now, he wants to make a trip just to see how many of those high scores are still there. ]

So, everything is competitive to you? There's not just one game that you play casually?

Why do you care so much all of a sudden?

[there it is, kaiba hitting the brakes. laying down a boundary. it isn't mean, not really, but it is assertive. it is a reminder that they weren't friends and they didn't like each other -- at least that was true on his end. and he inclines his head the slightest bit, as he did when assessing an opponent.]

You know I don't do anything casually. I didn't grow up in a game shop.

[he grew up in much worse circumstances. and with much worse people.]

I play to win. That's all. As long as it gets me closer to my goal, it's the only thing that matters.

yugi raises his eyebrows slightly and blinks. he would think the answer to that would be obvious to anyone but seto kaiba. his shoulders slouch slightly. they are rivals--but shouldn't rivals still know good things about one another? even if kaiba probably views the pharaoh as his actual rival as opposed to pair of them together. ]

I've always cared. We've just never had the opportunity to talk. [ his tone is gentle, but not filled with fear or hesitation. yugi has come a long way since the early days of duelist kingdom.

not that he thinks it'll really help build a friendship, but, it can't hurt if kaiba knows more about him. kaiba doesn't have to share anything in return. there's not even an expectation from yugi that he will. ]

It wasn't the fact that I've grown up helping my grandpa in the game shop that made me love games. Not really. Anyone can work somewhere with family and end up resenting it.

Growing up in the game shop gave me something to escape into. It was what games can do that makes me love them - competitive or not.

[ yugi is fairly sure that the answer isn't going to go well. but, he's only really joined tournaments because there was a reason to. he had to get his grandpa's soul back, they had to get the god cards to unlock the pharaoh's memories. he supposes if the pharaoh wants to continue dueling, then, they'll discuss it.

but it was also true. who really was yugi but a shadow for a much bigger man? just someone who had bumbled into that puzzle, nothing more, nothing less. destiny could take a hike; sometimes luck was all that mattered. and as far he was concerned, it was luck that allowed him to win, time after time. so he told himself. so he had to believe.

truth be told, however, he was living in his shadow too.]

[ kaiba isn't wrong. as long as the pharaoh is there, all eyes turn to him. that's to be expected though. he commanded armies and led a kingdom. he has a presence and magnetism that draws everyone around him in. yugi's been fine with that. he's not someone who looks for the spotlight or for all the eyes of the world to watch him.

all he's ever really wanted is friends. while the pharaoh might overshadow him and people might think that he's the real yugi muto? to yugi, he's his partner. his best friend. he doesn't mind doing whatever he needs to for that friend.

he also knows, though, that it's his duty to help the pharaoh however he can. although, kaiba doesn't really buy into the occult side of it all. so, there's no point in bringing that up. ]

I've always been fine with just going along. I never stood out for good reasons anyways. [ it's really no secret he was the target of all the bullies in school. no need to mention it plainly. ] I've only ever really had one thing I've wanted. I'm not like you or him in that way.

[goodness gracious. this kid had the worst kicked puppy dog look in existence. even mokuba couldn't measure up.

and it was one of those conversations he must have had with himself many, many times. because he's also had conversations with himself, many, many times. they always sounded different. they didn't sound so sad. but they always sounded desperate, as if trying to convince his own worst critic.]

[the rain just falls harder. and his eyes are as sharp and stern as they ever were.]

If you can't handle the crown, maybe it really should belong to someone else.

[ yugi lifts his gaze once kaiba speaks again. there's a faint tug at the corner of his mouth, like a smile is trying to work its way up but doesn't quite manage it.

technically the title belongs to both him and the pharaoh. they build the decks and strategies together. his other self is just the better duelist. it's not a fact that yugi is going to disagree with or even argue. ]

[in an extraordinarily rare occurrence, kaiba smiles but yugi does not. he otherwise refuses to answer.

domino was a small town, though it seemed to grow bigger by the day. so it doesn't take long to reach the big house at the far end, the kaiba manor which had been passed down from one grumpy old man to another. even if kaiba was only grumpy in spirit. a bright-eyed boy waits by the front door, to which kaiba just sighs.]

Brace yourself. Because he's tackling one of us. Or both of us.
