[ Stephanie has never been deluded enough to let herself imagine what a life as Mrs Barnes might be like, inheriting Bucky's family's house in Brooklyn or maybe the farm in Indiana, making a quiet little life with Bucky at her side and children underfoot.

For one thing, she's never really been good with children, being an only child, and has never really wanted any of her own. For another, for most of her life, even the thought of having children was enough to send her breath seizing in her lungs in anticipation for how badly her frail body would cope with the stress.

But she'd always sort of imagined that, whatever direction Bucky's life would take, there's be space at his side for her. Somehow. Even if she had to help him and his imaginary wife raise their imaginary children, she'd be there and that would be enough for her. Imagining a future without Bucky had been impossible, like imagining a world where the sky was green and grass grew purple. Ridiculous. Never going to happen.

It happened.

And then it un-happened, a cosmic gift that still makes her knees a little weak when she thinks about it, a cruel twist of fate that left both of them bereft of each other, even if they couldn't remember it properly at the time. She still thinks she got the easier end of that bargain, sleeping in an icy prison for decades while Bucky was forced to suffer again and again without her.

She had promised him, one night in a run-down little apartment in Bucharest as she held his metal fist in both her hands and tried not to let them shake too badly, that she'd never leave him again. Even God himself couldn't tear her from his side this time. Bucky was just going to have to get used to life with her attached to his side again, just like he did when they were stupid kids running loose in the city streets, getting into trouble.

She hadn't envisioned, as she sat there and stared desperately at him in the yellow light from the exposed bulb poking out of the wall, that her promise would lead them here: a quiet suburban street, not too affluent, but lined with single-family homes with single-car driveways and American flags hanging by nearly every door, flowers spilling out of window boxes and trees shading the sidewalk as it unfurls down the hill like a roll of film. ]

Well. [ Standing on the skirt of the driveway, her hands on her hips as she looks at the little white clapboard house with its cheery yellow door, she lifts her eyebrows. ] They're definitely not going to look for you here.

Desertion carried a death sentence, and yet death had already tried to claim him. Still some of the men had called after him as he rode out the gates that he would regret leaving like this. That he still owed his vows to the Wall. But his vows ended in death, and as such he felt he carried them no longer. News came of the wedding, of Robb's fate as he was passing one of the towns and it only pushed him to ride harder with Ghost at the horse's side.

Rumor had it that Robb's wife had survived, had somehow found a way out of the wedding. And everything in him said that he needed to get to her, to help her and hide her. Catching her as some men were trying to take her gods know where, he slipped from his horse easily and in a matter of minutes the men were on the ground. If he had a feral look to him while fighting, a softness settles on his features as he offers her his hand.

"My lady, we need to hide you or there will be more." Because he refused to let her be a pawn in any of the lords vying for her. A soft whistle had his horse trot over, though Ghost was kind enough to herd the horse over. "I am Jon," he offers before he forgets completely. He's hoping that Robb had mentioned him at least some so he won't be a complete stranger.
