Flowers, in the Victorian Era (1837-1901), were often used as means of communication when people could not openly say things that we do these days. Think about someone who is naturally repressed; now imagine a whole society focusing on being repressed. You can see why lovers needed some sort of secret code. Poor things.

No longer used much, there are some remaining, well-known meanings—roses inspiring passion and love are a classic example. So, grab a bouquet and give it to someone special. Beware of what certain flowers could say, though. Not all flowers were used happily.

[ Yutaka buys the flowers on a whim when he sees them in clusters at a flower shop on the way to his apartment. He picks the colors randomly; a mix of reds, whites, and then a bunch of yellows. Especially yellows because the latter is on bargain and he's sure Tatsumi would appreciate his rare display of frugality. As he places them in his vase and makes a note (to 003, because he's liable to forget) to bring them to Tatsumi's office the next day, he thinks he remembers reading about Chrysanthemums before. Aside from being featured in the imperial seal of Japan, he remembers it meaning 'friendship'.

It's only appropriate, he thinks. He can't really say Tatsumi and him are friends, but friends are nice, and it'd be nice to be friends with Tatsumi. Probably. Or maybe he can say this is a cheer-up gesture, since the Kyoto incident and Tsuzuki almost dying again is just a few weeks ago. Either way, the chrysanthemums beckoned, most of them were on sale, and last time he was in Tatsumi's office, he couldn't help but notice the potpourri - as in really dead and dried - flowers Tatsumi had in his vase.

The next day he barges into Tatsumi's office with his usual zest - and ignores his frown - spouts off another request for more funding, and then non-chalantly replaces the dead flowers in Tatsumi's vase with his Chrysanthemums. ]

There, now there's some life in your office finally!

[ He exclaims suddenly in between his 'Give me more funding' speech. Of course, it was his intention to catch Tatsumi off guard. 003 agreed it was the best course of action! ]

[He certainly does not speak flower. If he is lucky then these will say Soubi, you're kind of a jerk on Wednesdays.

The odds of him getting flowers is a wonder. He has received flowers as a gift before from a friend despite his mother having made a mess of them. But this is different with the intention of actually giving someone else flowers are opposed to getting. Not that he went out to a shop and bought them on his nonexistent budget or anything like that. But, details, who cares where the flowers came from.

They are not going to do him any good if he keeps them for himself so they certainly need a new home. And that is where he is headed as he has already made up his mind on the matter. Maybe that person can make something of them. They may not contribute to any artistic muse --now that he thinks about it, he has never actually seen Soubi paint but who wants people over their shoulder so that is understandable-- but maybe do some good for the apartment that isn't his.

But, yeah, here ya go. Worst case scenario is that Natsuo and Youji will develop an interest in eating potted plants or something.]

There's a dried gathering of various colors, tied with a colorful ribbon, sitting on the bedside table when Emma finally rouses herself. A pitcher of ice water and a glass is also there, as promised. It's not as though he's slept at all, alternating between being sick and emptying the contents of his stomach to fretting about the damage done. So when morning finally came around it found Jefferson moving about the house, cleaning up, fixing some food, and finding a number of ways to distract himself. That was of course between trips upstairs to check on her, making sure she was sleeping alright, still breathing, during which times he reflects on how ironic it is that he's playing caretaker so easily these days. Since Grace, at least.

It's like it was in his nature all along and he simply never knew. Maybe Emma's right about him. But he can't say that aloud without risking never hearing the end of it, he thinks with a faint smile, before closing the door quietly behind him. It's nearly time to bring up breakfast, and the smell might wake her up. ]
