She'd called him three times, but that was the only message she left. She kept trying to convince herself she was overearracting, that what she'd seen was a doppelganger, or a figment of her imagination.... or that somehow there was a perfectly logical explanation for it all. Really, she didn't want to face the possibility that another man might have deceived her and played her for a fool.

Steve sat at the kitchen table, his coffee growing cold as he focused on the piece of paper in front of him. He was sketching without really thinking, his fingers moving the pen across the page and slowly building the scene from last night.

He'd waited up for her, something that he'd found himself doing more and more. Usually, it wasn't even as complicated as that. Usually he would just go down to the lab and keep her company for a little while. It was a routine that they'd been slowly building. Natasha was an encyclopedia of information and though she was often amused by his questions, he got the distinct feeling that she enjoyed explaining some of the more complicated things of the modern world to him.

Last night she hadn't been in the lab and when he's asked Jarvis where she'd gone he'd been told that Colonel Rhodes had returned to the city and they'd gone out to celebrate. They'd come home close to 4AM, their arms slung around one another, laughing and talking loudly about old memories. Natasha had barely introduced the two of them - Rhodes' handshake was too firm and enthusiastic, but maybe that was the alcohol or the fact that Natasha told Steve he used to have a Captain America poster - when Rhodes had ushered her towards the bedroom.

Steve had gone to his room after that and lain awake for a long time afterwards. It bothered him more than he knew it should. It still bothered him this morning, though he was trying to force that twinge of jealousy and disappointment back. He and Natasha were friends. What she did and what she felt for other people, that wasn't any of his business, was it?
