THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME


In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

Alpha - Manifestation/Rut

[ Jason skated by from the beginning of puberty to about twenty-one years of age without manifesting his true alpha tendencies. Maybe it had something to do with dying and coming back from the grave, delaying the manifestation of his heat cycle. He'd screwed around with a couple of girls and guys already in his life, and it wasn't anything different from how betas might have done things. Today, though, today when he woke up and headed out into the streets, he noticed this strong scent in the air. It was coming from different directions, different omegas running around in the height of their cycles.

The scent was quickly driving him, well, nuts. He was in a load of discomfort, his clothes getting too tight. Too warm. He'd heard enough from other people to get what this was, dealt with enough horny alphas and omegas, when he had thought he was just a beta to understand. He needed to follow one of those scents; the strongest one was the closest, or maybe just the one that matched most. It was sweet - he'd have to see if his soon to be partner proved to be just as sweet. ]

[ I can actually pretty much go any way with him. No matter which way it goes, he won't be hiding or going on suppressants. If Alpha, he can control himself; if Beta or Omega, heats might be a regular thing but he deals with them.

Alpha - goes against type, kind of quiet and in-the-background, but ridiculously tough when the occasion presents itself.

Beta - calm, level-headed, possibly containing both alpha and omega sexual characteristics?

Omega - goes against type again; outwardly he might be quiet and generally submissive but he's a police officer and tough as nails when it comes down to it.

I'm actually kind of interested in platonic CR in this kind of universe (though I also am quite a fan of smut and like m/m and m/f!) concerning things like jobs, inter-designation dynamics, that kind of thing. Ping me if there might be something you want to explore! ]

Arthur didn't like to think about that day. He actually tried to block it out as much as he could.

It was too painful to remember. It was better to focus on the good times they had had, let that be what he remembered of Will. And not how it had ended with him beating the cop into unconsciousness and leaving him in his apartment, taking the chance he had to run as far as he could. He had stopped long enough to call an ambulance in for Will's address but kept it anonymous and was already headed to the airport.

Nearly two years later, in Paris, Arthur was now a singe parent. He knew from the moment he had found out he was pregnant that it was Will's. His anger at the other man having wanted to arrest him over his [ex] profession, basically giving him a life sentence without a trial, had made him debate even keeping it.

But then he realized it was the only piece of Will he still had, all to himself and they would love him back.

So, he decided to keep the child. Decided to raise them on his own and give them the best life he could. This morning was no different: waking up and getting his coffee before going in to get the baby up. A little boy with Will's eyes and dark rust colored hair. He was as sweet as Will and Arthur was glad for it. He named him Daniel.

He had been a bit afraid at first, especially after leaving his previous, dangerous profession. He hadn't been sure if he could give the child everything they needed but all the fear had been worth it to see that first smile directed at him. Hear that first yawn and laugh. That tiny hand hold one of his fingers.

It had surprised him in the best ways. He had never seen himself as the "parent" type.

But it was a role he easily fell into after developing a routine. This morning it was the same. Diaper change, breakfast, get dressed, and out to the park.

Mornings tend to be the best time. It was quieter and less people around. Daniel was still learning how to walk but he was usually content in watching the fountains and looking at the flowers and trees as his father pushed him in his stroller. It was only when they stopped near a bench, Arthur wanting to take a seat for a few minutes, that he noticed one of the baby's shoes was untied.

Arthur kneeled to tie it, saying to his son, "Now how did you do this?" The infant just grinned around his pacifier and kicked his little feet. Grinning, Arthur shook his head, "Silly boy."

Sebastian can think of a dozen reasons being an Omega frustrates him. he doesn't like being out of control. He doesn't like being so out of control he can't stop someone else from controlling him. Taking advantage of him.

He was fourteen when it happened. When he found out he was an Omega. He had enough problems starting high school. Awkward, shy, a late bloomer. That's what some of the kids called him.

But an Omega on top of it all. And having to remember to take a suppressant. Could it get any more annoying.

Missing a dose could be pretty annoying. Especially when he felt like a ticking time bomb. But what could he do? Hide?

Not today.

Sebastian knew he was taking a risk, but he was in the early stages of heat and this test was the most important test of his life. If he didn't get into this intern program with the prestigious law firm his father was most likely going to disown him. Or just stop paying for college. And there wasn't another opportunity like this one for another year. He didn't really want to be a lawyer, but he didn't know what he really wanted to do with his life. Not yet.

At least the administrator giving the test had allowed for arrangements to be made. All Sebastian had to do was get himself to the University, take the test, and get home without attracting too much attention.

But a well thought out plan always has a flaw. And his taxi, the only safe way to get home when his body was giving off the scent of an Omega in heat, was not where he requested it to be. In fact, it was no where in sight. And when he called to find out how much longer he discovered it wouldn't be arriving for another hour.

Something about traffic.

Sebastian looked around him, trying to figure out another way. He couldn't take the bus, being trapped in a box now would be the worst place to be. His father was too far away, he'd have better luck calling for another taxi. He debated going back inside and asking the administrator to allow him to stay in the room where he took his test. But an overly zealous brush against his cheek from a stranger had him quickly walking away, towards the street and the crosswalk. He'd walk home if he had to. His apartment was only about five miles away. He could make it.
