The Mistaken Identity Meme

There are infinite universes, and only a limited range of human features. Whether your character is a twin, a triplet, a clone, a shapeshifter, a really good makeup artist, or just played by a reasonably prolific actor, there's someone out there in RP land who's a dead ringer for them. Shenanigans are practically required to ensue.

[ oh i would LOVE a jack to play with! i'm thinking earlier evil missy is the best way to go, since redemption-arc missy would probably have to have the doctor scolding her through an earpiece throughout the entire thing. which, you know, would probably be hilarious, but i think we might have more fun with evil missy. ]

Whatever he was upto while he was gadding about the universe, Jack always kept an eye on what UNIT was investigating, and lately there'd been a lot of chatter about something called 3W. Enough to bring him back to Earth to have a look for himself, because anything dealing with life after death (as it appeared 3W did) would always be of interest to the man who had such an intimate relationship with it.

Following UNIT's breadcrumbs, he paused on the steps to St Paul's Cathedral, scanning with his wrist strap. If UNIT were right, there was some kind of dimensionally transcendental space here, somewhere, if he could just manage to pinpoint the entrance to it...

Regardless of what incarnation of herself she happened to be on, weaving intricate plans with the intention of luring the Doctor into the web would always be one of her most relished hobbies. She had been building on this latest plan for so long, and it was so very close to coming to a head. So close to the final act, with both the Doctor and Clara so close to her grasp.

It was all so close.

Which is why when she sees none other than Captain Jack Harkness on her doorstep, she has to completely smother a murderous spike of frustration. She needed to get rid of him, and unfortunately killing him wasn't going to work. She had so very thoroughly explored that avenue during that lovely little year she had him all to herself. There was, however, one way she knew to steer him away. Possibly the only way to get the good Captain to do anything he wasn't inclined to do.

"It's quite the conundrum, isn't it? There are doors and doors into the cathedral, but none of them quite the door you're looking for." Missy said from behind Jack, one hand poised on her hip, while the other rested her closed umbrella on her shoulder. "I should have known this would have been too much of a temptation for you to resist, Jack."

He hadn't heard anyone approaching, and he spun round sharply at the sound of the voice behind him to examine the woman standing there. No-one he recognised, but she obviously knew him, and considered herself familiar enough with him to use his first name.

Not that that narrowed it down particularly - there were a lot of people who'd been intimate enough with him to use his first name, and many of those he hadn't exactly known for long, but... no, he was fairly sure he'd remember someone with as much poise and presence as this, if he'd met them before!

Stylish but outdated outfit (waaaay more outdated than his own), and wearing it with an air of swagger and confidence he'd only ever really known from one person but... female. Could it be...??? He hesitated, torn.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?"

There's a brief moment of satisfaction in seeing Harkness whirl around like that, catching him off-guard. It was always such a joy getting to pull new expressions from that chiseled face of his -- just when she thought she had managed to drag every little bit of new emotion from him, he managed to surprise her. This was going to be positively delightful.

"Come on, now, Captain. A little quicker on the up-take, would you?" Missy strode past him, swinging her umbrella down to point it at the cathedral. She presses a button on the handle, and that all-too-familiar whirring sonic sound emits as she makes a big show of scanning the building with her sonic umbrella. "There is a mystery to solve here. And as we all know, that is the one thing that I absolutely, positively, cannot resist."

Despite himself, he couldn't help standing a little straighter at that reprimand, watching as the woman pointed her umbrella at the cathedral and... sonic'd it?

He gaped for a long moment, wide-eyed. Looked the woman up and down again, trying to process what he was seeing - what he was hearing - and fit the pieces together in the right way.

"...Doctor?"

Missy spins around with a flourish, maybe enjoying hamming it up a bit too much.

"The one and the only! I'll have to remember to fetch you a gold star for such clever deduction skills." She briskly makes a half-circle around Jack, using her umbrella like a cane, the end of it clinking against the concrete with each step. "And this is the part where you tell me how very long it's been, how dreadfully you've missed me, and flatter me on this newest face of mine. Does that sound about right?"

She's careful to leave a hint of a light, pleasant teasing tone to her voice. This was supposed to be one of her (the Doctor's) dear, beloved pets, after all! Even if she (the Doctor) abandoned him like a sack of puppies in the rain the moment he wasn't cute and cuddly and not a walking temporal paradox.

Totally hamming it up, but that's definitely not out of character for the Doctor. And after all, who's Jack to condemn someone for doing a little hamming it up?

He shakes his head, smiling, while inside his heart leaps in joy at this unexpected meeting. He isn't nearly as needy for the Doctor these days as he was a few years ago, after more than a century of waiting for answers about what the hell had happened to him and who he was and why the Doctor had abandoned him, but there'll always be a big place in his heart for the Doctor.

He takes a step back to give her another look up and down, a proper, appreciative one this time, and grins. "Yeah, sounds about right. It is a very nice face - and an even better body!" With a good, old-fashioned Jack Harkness leer. He gestures up and down at her elegantly corseted form. "So how long have you been rocking this look, you old scoundrel?"

Excellent. Step one complete: convince the faithful lapdog that she was the Doctor. Now the next few steps to this plan were a little more tricky than that. Honestly, she was surprised more people didn't imitate the Doctor when they got the chance -- it was so easy to get away with! Given the right physiology, that is. Or the right technology to replicate that physiology.

Missy gives a little turn for Jack, giving him a full view of the entire package. "Not very long. Still getting the hang of things, I'm afraid." She lied through a pretty little smile, "I thought it was about time for a change, or an upgrade, rather."

Dark eyebrows arched upwards and his mouth stretched into an amused smile as he took advantage of that twirl to take in every angle of her new body.

"An upgrade, eh? Well, I guess at the very least it must take some getting used to! Whole different shape, whole different way of walking, moving... the centre of gravity must be very different too..."

He trailed off and grinned, gesturing at her new form again, because however nice it was it was taking some getting used to. "So this was a conscious choice then? You managed to control your regeneration?"

Well, presumably even the Doctor might learn to control the process eventually!
