No matter how the darkness looms around you - how much you've become the darkness - there's one bright spot in your life - a person who makes everything worthwhile.
It doesn't really matter how they came to you. What does is that they stay. Whether you admit it or not, you seek comfort from them...and, perhaps, them from you, if you're in the same situation.
So, whether you push them away, treat them right, or go so far as to worship them and put them on a pedestal, you don't want them to go now. You crave being with them, or at least being in their presence. Don't ruin this for yourself. After all, what would you do without your little ray of light? You'll do anything to keep them happy and loved. Anything.

HMM I'm down for some assumed CR! Did you have a preference for how well they knew/know each other or what kinds of interactions they had in the past? As for setting, we could go with a good-ol canon mashup. If Kingdom Hearts is good for one thing, it's making it really easy to slot other canons into it. ]
[A world mashup sounds cool! Maybe Aqua met him a few years back on a task to save the world when he was in the Order of the Sword and an angry boy? I think established CR where she helped Nero work on his anger would be sweet, so it'd encourage him to get her out of a dark spell if she came back years later, in trouble.]
[A month and change spent dealing with plant and insect demons had Nero craving a scalding hot shower without the weird metallic chemical wash from the van. Next time he'd spring for the better quality soap but that could wait. Nero kicked off his boots to get ready for bed in the middle of the afternoon, confident he could buckle down and get some rest in before he took on another job. He had a lot to process.
He woke up hours later to rolling thunder. Irritable, he glared at thunderclouds over the ruins of Fortuna. Nero hadn't felt the tingle that came with demons but he did feel the uneasy sensation of something being wrong there. So, he got dressed in a hurry and loaded up the van, driving to the ruins to check it out. He could only drive to a certain point, having to hoof it the rest of the way. Collapsed buildings, ruined statues and slashed up archways littered his path. Nero hopped from point to point, trying to follow that sickening feeling.
He stopped, staring down at a little, curly-limbed imp. It tried to grab him and he hopped back in fast action. He sucked in a breath.]
[ The single heartless in front of Nero was quickly joined by others. They rose up one after another from the shadows cast by the rubble, and as if pulled in by gravitational force, began to move and slide to a single point. The ground rumbled, a prelude to the writhing pillar of darkness and glowing yellow eyes that surged up from the mass of heartless.
Dark energy flared up, fueled by the pillar, and from within it, Aqua stepped out and into the ruined city. The darkness clung to her, only fading once she had taken a number of steps away. Years trapped in the realm of darkness had changed her. The loneliness and fear of that endless, suffocating place ate away at her until nothing but misery and despair remained. Her heart hadn't been strong enough in the end and she had succumbed.
Aqua scanned the area out of habit. She expected to find herself in another world that had fallen to darkness, but that didn't seem to be the case. The city had clearly fallen to ruin, but...it didn't feel like any of the other places she'd been during the time she'd been trapped. And on closer inspection-- ]
Wait, I know this place...
[ She began looking around with a little more energy, her eyes landing on Nero. The looming tower of heartless remained, though it stayed in place as though awaiting instruction. ]
[Not good. Nero squared off with the column of merging heartless, trying to track where they came from. The rubble had too many shadows and points for them to hide in and it had only grown in size. He lifted his hand up to pull the Red Queen free of its belt, just as the ground shook. He rushed forward to swing at the mass of heartless but he was stopped on the spot.
Nero lifted his gaze just in time to see a falling column of marble from an archway collapse when dark energy manifested and pushed it back. It was too late to avoid it for himself, though. Instead of striking the heartless, the surge of energy threw him back and into the air, groaning from the strain. Nero landed on his feet just as Aqua stepped out of that mass of darkness.
He lowered his sword on instinct, relief and surprise doing more than enough to lower his guard. He smiled without thinking beyond what his eyes showed him. She came back.]
Yeah, it's me. [He was a bit older and had cut his long hair but she recognized him right away. He'd try not to admit it made him pretty goddamned happy right away. It was enough to help him forget what sort of portal she came out of.]
