（ word spreads, as words so often do. dracula's castle was a symbol of fear for so long, to so many, and now it stands as something of a bastion against the darkness. he'd call it poetic irony, if he wasn't busy being overwhelmed with how it makes him feel.

he hadn't realized, not really, how much loneliness was gnawing at him. he'd simply accepted it as his due and birthright. it had never occurred to him that he needn't remain so, that the castle could be more than a mausoleum of things the world was better off without.

and as the word spreads, more people arrive. there have been countless villages ravaged by night creatures, many more by vampires. they struggle to manage them all. sypha has her hands full. it's alucard's idea, initially, to ride out to meet stragglers. offer them protection as they make their way. cut down any remaining creatures they may find.

at least, he assumes it's his idea. he's not certain anymore.

still, they are the two best suited for it. trevor is recovering. sypha, while she would argue, is in too precarious a position to risk. alucard is certain greta could manage the community with the same aplomb, but with trevor injured, sypha is the more powerful fighter and will do more to deter any further attacks than one human woman.

so off they ride, intending on starting north and circling east, corralling any refugees and sending them properly onwards. alucard has a bag filled with many of his mother's old salves and poultices for the treatment of injury, and though he may not have her vast array of knowledge, he is comfortable and familiar with the treatment of injury. they also carry food — considerably more than what they two need alone. just in case.

they're riding in a pleasantly cool evening. he can smell rain on the air, but it's distant, and seems to be removing away rather than towards them. still: ）

We should make camp. A fire will draw anyone out after dark.

Look.

Yes, picking up a random man on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere was probably a bad decision, but it's not like Jake's never made a bad decision in her life, and things have always worked out alright in the end. Right?

In fact, one could argue that her entire life up until this point was just a long string of bad decisions, but apart from the whole "on the run from Uncle Sam for years" thing and also the whole "framed for murdering an entire chopper full of orphans" thing, most of her bad decisions have worked out pretty well in the end.

They have!

She's cautiously hopeful that this one will work out okay in the end (God, she hopes it fucking works out in the end, Cougar is going to murder her if she gets herself weird sex-murdered by a random guy in fucking Iowa of all places after surviving all the shit they've been through) too, even if "pretty well" might be a stretch. So far her passenger has been perfectly polite, hasn't complained about her music or the fact that the passenger seat belt is stuck somehow and won't extend or retract any more than it's currently at, leaving the buckle dangling pitifully like a limp dick at about shoulder-height, constantly smacking him in the arm as the car trundles along.

She doesn't even really know where they're going, since conversation has been severely limited so far, but she's got a lot of practice hanging out with men who think uttering one word every two hours is talking her ear off, so she's not exactly perturbed.

Figuring she's less likely to be weird sex-murdered if she makes friends, she picks up the purple baggie of spicy tortilla chips she'd put in her lap to free up a seat beside her and holds it out across the gearbox. ]
