The Love Like the Movies Meme

The fun thing about movies is that there are so many options, nearly something for everyone. Action, adventure, comedy, tragedy, whatever your taste, you'll probably find something at the cinema. One of the most popular genres, of course, is romance. But don't think it's just chick flicks: a lot of movies have love in them, and those relationships presented can be as varied as the films themselves.

In this meme, you'll get a chance to play out some of the scenarios made popular in films. Some are directly inspired by certain movies, others by common tropes. So grab your popcorn and your chocolate and getting ready for some lovin', Hollywood style!

HOW TO PLAY
- Comment with your character and preferences.
- Others will comment to you, rolling the RNG to determine the prompt.
- Comment to others doing the same.

1. Childhood Friends (Just Friends, etc): You were friends as kids, but you never noticed how much this person means to you until you're grown up. That, or they got really, really hot.

2. Beauty & the Beast (what do you think?): One of you has a charmed life and is beautiful, and the other is ugly- physically or otherwise- or has something else about them (a tragic past, a curse, etc) that society deems you as "broken" for.

3. Beauty & the Geek (The Breakfast Club, every John Hughes movie ever, etc): Maybe this is a high school AU, or maybe it's not. Whatever the case may be, one of you is hot, popular, and athletic, and the other is...not so much. Still, there's something here. Will both of you be willing to look outside your clique and bear the ridicule in order to be together?

4. The Tearjerker (Love Story, a ton of Nicholas Spark movies): The two of you are falling in love, and your relationship is perfect. Or it is until one of you finds out you're dying, whether it be of illness or other causes! Or maybe not dying, just leaving forever. Who knows, whatever the reason, the two of you won't be able to be together forever. What will you do? Break up to ease the pain, or continue on until the last moments?

5. I was Enchanted to Meet You/Fairy Tale Love (Enchanted, etc): Though it may be awkward at first, your relationship is straight out of a fairy tale! Sugary sweet with lots of slow realizations and cute scenarios; singing animals are optional. This kind of love (and the right princess, of course) can even make the most stoic of men melt. How does she know you love her?

6. It Was Just Sex (No Strings Attached, Zack & Miri Make a Porno, etc): You both agreed it was supposed to be just sex. Friends with benefits, that's it. Well, about that. One of you wants to be more than just friends. That won't mess things up, will it?

7. The Hookup Gone Wrong (Knocked Up, etc): You got somebody pregnant, they accidentally imprinted on you, you went through a mating-for-life ritual without noticing it, whatever you crazy kids do these days. Now you're stuck with someone, may as well learn to tolerate them. If you're lucky, tolerance can grow into fondness, and then...

8. As You Wish/The Princess and her Stable Boy (Princess Bride, etc): This person may be beneath you, but whatever the case, you've always taken them for granted. Will you see their love before it's too late...like something bad happening?

10. A Little Species Difference (Twilight, Underworld, etc): Love is love...even if you two don't have the luxury of being the same species. But who cares if you're a vamp and she's a human, or you're a demon and he's an angel? Okay, maybe the rest of your kind or society cares, and that may cause a few problems, but it all works out in the end, right?

11. For Richer or Poorer (Titanic, etc): The poor boy sees the rich girl and falls in love at first sight. Maybe this doesn't describe your relationship exactly, but there differences in your social classes. Will the people around you and their obsession with money drive you apart, or can you show them that blue collar and black tie can be as one?

12. This is Very Unprofessional (The Bodyguard, etc): For some reason, you're supposed to protect this person. For the benefit of this missions, it's better to keep emotions out of it- oops, you've fallen in love with your charge! Or perhaps, even worse, you've fallen in love with someone who should be your enemy or you were supposed to eliminate!

13. The Wedding Crasher (Romcoms, romcoms): The person you love is with someone else- maybe even about to take the plunge into marriage. But they should totally be with you, and you're about to show the world! Er, even if that means crashing their special day.

14. The Enemies turned Lovers (Romeo + Juliet, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, etc): Perhaps the oldest story in the book, people from warring factions overcoming hate to give into their love for each other. Need I say more?

15. I Want You to Want Me (10 Things I Hate About You, etc): Ahh, hate growing to love. A staple of teen movies and romantic comedies for many years. That's because it works! There's just something about the chemistry you feel with someone you can't stand changing into a desire to actually be close to this person. After all, they say there's a thin line between love and hate.

16. The Comedic Misunderstanding (The Proposal, every romcom ever, etc): Oh no! You just heard the guy you love call you ugly to his friend! You saw the girl of your dreams with another man! Surely this means you're doomed and hated and you'll be forever alone! Oooor maybe it was just a misunderstanding- NOPE. DOOMED AND HATED AND FOREVER ALONE.

17. This Isn't A Love Story (500 Days of Summer, etc): Not all love ends with happily ever after. Sometimes there are just plain endings- very, very messy ones with lots of hate. So whoo keeps the dog, the apartment, and the IKEA furniture, you mad hipsters exes? Well, deciding that's part of the fun!

18. Find Something Better (Yet another romance cliche): You've broken up with somebody and totally sworn off of relationships for good! Nope, nobody is going to make you love agai- darn it! That free spirit made you love again! Shoot. Well, you don't have to let the- damn it, you let them into your heart, didn't you?

19. It All Worked Out in the End (almost every movie): You've been through lots of disasters and trials, maybe even years worth of separation, so now you've earned your life as a happy couple. Enjoy it!

20. Love at First Sight (many a movie): The obligatory love at first sight, which seems to dominate a lot of movies. You see this person and you know they're the one! Now you just have to win them over.

21. Mistaken Identities (I'm pretty sure a Mary Kate and Ashley movie was like this): You've fallen in love with someone, but while they love you, it's not the real you they love. They think you're someone else because of a misunderstanding, your own designs, or something along those lines. Can you risk telling them the truth and get them to love you for you, or will you live a lie?

22. Good Girl/Bad Boy (Grease, etc): I got chiiiills, they're multiplyin'! One of you is a goody-goody (at least in some capacity), while the other is from the wrong side of the tracks (what tracks?). It's dangerous, but there's something thrilling about danger. Still, are you sure this isn't just summer lovin'? If you really care for this person, maybe you can make it work.23. WILDCARD

[Enjolras had always chided Marius on his ridiculous love for Cosette--it was a distraction, one to be avoided at all costs. There was only one goal--and that was the goal of freedom and democracy. Anything else was something to be frowned upon. Others might have their petty mortal love--but Enjolras always had love for something greater--that of France.

...so the fact that he found himself constantly drawn towards the dark haired woman, who clearly was in a station so well above his own, was ludicrus.

But still, the heart can not stop itself, it seems.]

[Anna, on the other hand, had been raised for the most part, away from boys and men, her father afraid of what he deemed a 'bad influence' could do. He had plans for her, after all, all of which that had to do with marrying her off to the right man in order to secure his own future - not that it needed it.

Their family is old, their fortune what she would consider vast, and more and more recently, she's been aching to get out.

This day, she manages to sneak away from her chaperone, finding herself in a little cafe, where she spots a familiar figure. Perhaps she'd been doing a little bit of admiring of late as well.

Not sure of what to do or what to say, all she can do is offer a small smile, perusing the case of pastries, pretending that she's much more confident than she actually is.]

I wouldn't actually buy anything here, you know, unless it were coffee.

[Enjolras finally moves to speak, coming up to stand just behind her, a soft smile playing across his lips. He well knew what a smile could do to people--he has been told. Luckily he never wish to manipulate, truly, unless it is towards revolution.

Or this time, to get someone to perhaps smile back.]

We don't use this cafe because of the excellent good, I assure you.

Is that so? Would it be entirely rude of me to admit that these treats don't exactly look all that ... appetizing?

[For a moment, Anna doesn't turn, for fear of looking too eager, but when she does, there is the hint of a teasing little smile playing at the corner of her lips as well. She offers the slightest hint of a curtsy, and then nods her head back at the counter.]

Then why, if you don't mind my asking? [She continues, seemingly without thinking, or without attempting to find a good segue - her mouth running faster than her brain.] I have seen you in the square on occasion.

Well, perhaps it would be, but I doubt they would really mind.

[He gave a slight nod of his head, and after making a quick order of coffee (two, not one, he did say it was good, after all), he leaned against the counter, quirking an eyebrow.]

Then you should know what I am about. I speak of revolution, of democracy. Of giving every man and woman the chance to breathe freely, without the yoke of oppression upon their necks.

Still, I think that the only one I will tell such a thing is you. I would hate to be overly rude, after all.

[The gesture surprises Anna, but she doesn't argue. It might be nice to sit and have a conversation and enjoy the coffee that he's said is probably the best the cafe has to offer.

She does know who he is, had heard him speak a few times, when she wasn't rushed away - Heaven forbid she actually start to believe what she hears.]

I do. You are a very passionate speaker, and you inspire others to follow you. I find myself agreeing very much with the things I've heard you say.

Well then I'll allow it.

[Gesturing, he moves towards a small corner of the cafe, away from prying eyes and the bustle of the rest of his crew. He would hear about this later, of course, but he would deal with it as necessary. He always does.

At her words, he gives her a smile, running a hand through blond curls.]

And I am glad to hear it--we will need all those who feel as we do about the cause, when the time comes.

[He quirks an eyebrow.]

You must know my name, but I fear I do not know yours.

Oh, merci, it is much appreciated.

[Anna doesn't hesitate to follow along. She does not need to worry much, knowing that her father does not frequent places like these, and it was likely that her chaperone wouldn't think to search for her here as well.

She nods, taking a set, smoothing out her skirts as she does.]

Have many people shown an interest in what you speak of? Have many joined the cause?

[She is genuinely interested to know. Many people would be quick to listen, but slow to act, if they did at all.]

Well, I must remedy that, and posthaste. [She offers a hand to shake.] Anna. [Her entire moniker is much too unwieldy to share, but this would do.]

[Enjolras nods, and pauses to speak again as their drinks are put down. He wraps his hands around the mug, and gives a good smile.]

Yes, and more join every day. Most are from the university--but there are people from all over the city who have expressed interest. When the time comes, I have no doubt they will rise to the occasion.

[He has hope, conviction in that. He has to--has to believe that people believe in freedom as much as he.]

Anna.

[He gives her hand a firm shake. It perhaps should have been a kiss, but that wasn't his way.]

[Anna looks up and offers a smile in thanks, but is quick to return her attention to the man sitting across from her.]

That is so good to hear. It is such a worthwhile cause, something that everybody should hear about and care about and, well, fight for. I always try to stop and listen when I hear you speak.

Unfortunately ... my father - he does not quite see things in the same way.

[People do! But some can't support it in the way that they wish they could. Some can only listen, hope for change, pray for it.]

It is my pleasure to meet you properly.

[She's actually impressed that it wasn't. She's met so many suitors who have overworked themselves in attempting to charm her that this was a welcome change. It's appreciated.]

[Enjolras takes a sip of his coffee, but his focus is on her, listening intently. She is passionate, beautiful. He rarely is stirred by the latter, but always by the former. It is...a curious combination, for him, someone who has only ever found a desire for the very country that he seeks to free.

But a country is not of flesh and blood.]

Then sod your father, and join us. This cause is more important than family--allow us to become that.

You are not the only one who has a family that disapproves.

[Enjolras abandoned his for the cause.]

[Anna certainly is not the daughter her father had hoped for. She is not easily malleable, questions his motives, and the reasons why he insists that she must do what is proper.

If she were the daughter he had hoped for, she wouldn't be here right now.]

What - just ... don't return home? Just ... leave everything behind? Is it really so easy?

[The thought of being free is first and foremost in her mind, although she still has questions. Not doubts, just questions.]

Where would I stay?

I never said it was easy.

But it can be that simple.

[Enjolras gave another smile, but his eyes are serious.]

It's a decision once made that probably couldn't be taken back...

...and as for rooming, most of us have taken rooms in this area. There are sympathizers who have provided us lodging.

I would not want to take it back, once the decision was made. He does not care about me more than he does affixing our status, and I am wholeheartedly not interested in marrying someone out of duty rather than love.

I don't know if I want to marry at all.

I want the freedom to do as I choose, and I know that is what you speak of, what you are willing to fight for.

I think my decision is an easy one.

[and Enjolras smiles at that, shaking his head slightly.]

I have to say that I have never see the likes of you before. You'll be a welcome addition--the others will like you a great deal.

[And he already does.]

Well - [Anna huffs out a laugh, warming her hands on her cup] my father always did say that I was one of a kind. He, I think, meant it as an insult. You, I think, mean it very differently.

If they are anything like you, I think I will like them as well.

[Not quite as much as he, himself, but enough.]

Let him say what he will.

[Enjolras smirks.]

My parents aren't pleased with my own decisions. Quite disowned, at this point--and I couldn't be more pleased.

[He takes another sip of his coffee, giving a nod. He just...isn't used to liking women, like this--or anyone, for that matter. He isn't quite sure how to proceed, especially with her actually taking up the cause.]

I am sure that he will have a lot to say. Seduced away from home by a man who talked big, never knowing that home was a place that I hated.

[Anna can't help but laugh, nodding along. She understands that all too well, already certain that no one will bother coming to look for her, and all the better. Let him marry above his station. Let him secure his future.]

Were your parents like my father, then? So resistant to anything that you wanted to do in order to make yourself happy - to fulfill what it is that you wanted to?

[It's a sentiment that she shares. It's strange being faced with someone that she likes of her own accord, rather than having men forced onto her. Still, it doesn't feel awkward - just new.]

[Enjolras flushes, slightly, and scoffs.]

I am hardly one to seduce anyone, I assure you.

[Really--that would be one of the other boys, not him. His skills don't lie in that place.]

My parents are kind, but bourgeoisie. They don't understand how much the people suffer, while they live in their beautiful home--how sacrifices must be made so all of us can be free.

[She's never seen him caught off guard like this before. But then, usually when she sees him, he's passionate, animated, the picture of a leader.]

No? He will still think so, even if we know better. He will think me blinded by pretty words and an even prettier smile. Let him think what he wants, I don't care anymore.

[As Anna has never been successfully seduced - although many had tried, she doesn't know what it would take to make her heart all a-flutter. Not that that's what she was looking for.]

I am sure you attempted to show them. I think, no matter the kindness, there are people that don't question anything outside their ... well, their happy life. But it is not fair to live that life when it means that others suffer.

I agree.

[He shakes his head.]

I have to be frank--I didn't actually think I'd be gaining another for the cause, when I saw you.

Truly, that is not much of a surprise. I'm sure I looked the part of the high and mighty, sniffing down her nose at the very thought of what it was you were saying.

But I listened. I was always listening.

No, I didn't think that.

[He smiles, slightly.]

But even if you listen, and sympathize...giving up all you are isn't something most would do.

No? What did you think, if you don't mind my asking. I have the unfortunate habit of ... being too curious for my own good.

[She shrugs slightly, thinking it over for a moment before she answers.]

That life? That was not for me. I would gladly give it all up if it meant that I could be free. And if I could help people at the same time. Perhaps it is not what most people would do, but perhaps I am not like most people.
