[Snow fell down in thick, silent flakes outside, the cold seeping through the thick blankets tucked around Rufus. It had been snowing all day and the ground outside was completely covered by the early evening. Tseng, Elena, and Reno had been sent on their own particular missions earlier in the day, leaving him with just Rude for company. The others wouldn't return until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest so it would be just the two of them for the night.

The quiet was refreshing at first but after a few hours the world seemed like the entire world was put on mute. It troubled him in a way that he couldn't put a finger on and by the time he was in bed wrapped in a couple layers of blankets sleep still eluded him despite the exhaustion pulling on him.

Eventually he gives up and pulls himself out of the bed, wrapping himself in one of the thick blankets that had been on his bed. His footsteps are silent as he venture down the hallway the darkness, guiding himself with a hand skimming along the wall until it finds the door of Rude's bedroom. There is a pang of guilt that he's disturbing Rude's sleep but he still turns the knob to let himself in, pausing in the doorway to give Rude a chance to wake up. But he doesn't ask permission after that moment as he makes his way to the bed, pulling back the blanket with fingers stiff from the cold.

He was relieved that the darkness hid his expression but there was no denying that this was a show of vulnerability he would never let anyone else witness. But he had absolute trust in Rude, pulling the blankets back over him with numb fingers.]

I will try not to hog the blankets at least. [His voice is soft, cracked with exhaustion but he's still wide awake, sleep wasn't going to come easily.]

[ Well he's not really sure how he ended up here, but it was the only way to ensure that she'd be safe, even if she is going to resent him for this even more. But he can't allow the alternative of some boy ending up here instead, whether it's Quentin or his brother Jonathan or both of them, Nancy deserves better and Uncle Felix is here to make sure that she spends no time on such frivolous activities with either of them.

He'll do better than when her brother Steve somehow finagled his way into Cheryl's life, gosh what a mess that is, who knows how he's treating her? That won't happen again, not on Ace's watch, not to Nancy, the other innocent cherub here in this void. If only some of Ace's ex lovers from the old world could see him now, just a caring surrogate father figure to the poor teen girls here, and only part of him hopes that Felix notices his efforts to be protective, most of him is actually doing it out of the kindness of his heart. Perhaps a desire to atone for his previous life. Whatever the reason, he's here now sneaking into Nancy's bed while she snores quite loudly, hoping to not wake her.]

[Ramshackle Dorm is in a lot better shape than it was at the beginning of the school year, and for the most part it's been a comfortable place for the VDC team to stay as they prepare for the competition... but that last heavy snowfall proved to be more than the worn-out roof over Epel's room could handle. It won't be too hard to clean up and repair, but at least for tonight, the room isn't suitable for sleeping in. And so: ]

Thanks for letting me stay in here tonight. Let's hope my luck doesn't follow us and collapse the ceiling in here next...
