The Hanahaki Disease Meme

The Hanahaki Disease is an illness born from one-sided love, where the patient throws up and coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. The infection can be removed through surgery, but the feelings disappear along with the petals...

1- Discovery:
There's the one person who makes your heart leap into your throat- but wait, that's not your heart. Where are all these flowers coming from? And why do they remind you of your beloved?

2- Concern:
Someone you know has been acting strange lately... Coughing a lot, hiding their hands all the time... It's enough to make anybody worry.

3- Sicker and Sicker:
Coughing up flower petals all the time isn't easy to hide. But it's getting harder to even breathe, now. You're going to have to make a decision, and soon...

4- Confession:
Everyone knows that there's two ways to get rid of Hanahaki: Surgery (the risk dependent on the time period), or confessing your feelings. Time to toe up and face your beloved and just tell them that you love them so much you're dying from it.

5- Post-Op:
The other option... You just couldn't tell them, but you weren't ready to die. Still, without those feelings the world seems a little less colorful. Can you still be friends with them now that you have to start all over? Do you want to?

6- Make your own!
There's flower petals coming out of somebody's mouth in some way for some reason- make this prompt your own.

Just as a note, due to the nature of the meme vivid descriptions of coughing/choking/gagging are probably going to happen. If you want it toned down, make sure to put that in your top-level.

Sylvan, however, doesn't usually talk in his canon because of the magical nature of his voice, though I headcanon that other magically-talented beings can withstand the magic without being as affected by it. [The sickness started slowly, first with an uncomfortable weight in his chest, then pressure, then the feeling of phlegm blocking his throat that wouldn't go away no matter how hard he coughed, and then petals, sometimes even full flowers, began to rain from his mouth. It hadn't taken long to identify them as belladonna. Deadly nightshade. The favorite flower of the one person in this world Julian Devorak felt the most guilt, and resentment, toward.

None of his medical texts held any answers, nor did he find any in the texts he "borrowed" from the palace library. While he searched in vain he began to think of the twisted thing burying its roots in his heart as a poison.

It made sense, didn't it? Belladonna was poison, and while this wasn't the way he knew it to act in the human body, he could feel it killing him all the same. Slowly, coughing becoming near constant, breathing growing ragged, every day a greater struggle than the last.

Weeks pass with no answers to be had, and so, reluctantly, Julian turns to the last place he'd ever want to look: magic. He fastens his old plague mask over his face, taking some small comfort in knowing he won't be leaving a trail of blood flecked petals behind him. It's a short walk, one that should take no time at all and instead takes ages.

By the time he knocks on the shop door the long beak of his mask is packed full with flowers.]

[ while prompt two would be most probable, it would be very interesting to have satoshi afflicted with the disease. he's considerably spacey but drawn to outgoing types, so i doubt he himself would realize he has a crush until the flowers appear. even then, he'd likely be confused and worried... until he's told exactly what the disease is from the person he loves, maybe? then it's realization time.

of course, satoshi is admired in his canon and could very well be on the receiving end! cue looking after the other while being oblivious that he's the cause of the disease manifesting.

If it's going to be reciprocated, male or nb characters 13> work best. He can kind of pine stupidly after an older guy, however, and I'm happy to play it as Emil just accepting that his feelings aren't ever going to be reciprocated and the ~feelings~ that come with that. Ala canon. We can also do it with your character being the afflicted one, however, and he'll be completely oblivious to the possibility of someone loving him at all.

[ Akutagawa hacking and coughing was hardly a new occurrence--Illumi was quite used to the sound by now. Often times he could predict exactly when a fit was about to come on. ...Though petals were a new addition. Clearly floral in nature rather than the usual bloody chunks or clumps of lung mucus and tissue.

At first he thought nothing of it. Just another part of Ryunosuke's condition that he never bothered to bring up with how focused they were with hits and assassinations. Today, though, had seemed particularly difficult for the other man... at least until he felt his own lungs began to ache and he discovered a small petal in the palm of his own hand. It is carefully lifted toward the sky, Illumi's thumb brushing some of the fluids from the petal with a neutral expression. ]

[Bucky sighed, spitting the last few petals out of his mouth and wiping the back of his hand across his lips, glaring balefully at the mess in the trash. What used to be a stray petal now and then is quickly becoming a problem, the pressure in his chest growing. He can feel the damage to his lungs, flowers ripping into tissue faster than his metabolism can heal it.

He doesn't have time for this.

He runs water in the sink, filling a cup to rinse the taste of flowers from his mouth before reaching into the trash to bury the petals further down, out of sight. Just as he has been doing. Washing his hands, he stares at his reflection in the mirror.

How are you going to get out of this one, Barnes? Damned if he knows.

Whatever. He'll figure it out.

Finished, he exits the room and makes for the kitchen. Coffee will help wash the flowery taste from his mouth. Really strong coffee.]
