I. BAD ROMANCE

01. IT'S TOO LATE TO APOLOGIZE. You had a fight and now your lover isn't sure they want to even hear your apologies.

III. HOW CAN I EXIST WITHOUT YOU?

02. JEALOUSY. It's jealousy to the extreme. You're going to make damn sure your lover knows how you feel about them seeing other people.
03. INCEST IS BEST. You know it's wrong, all kinds of sinful, but you can't resist the draw. If characters aren't related, then they are now! Or at least it feels very close to incest anyway.

( There couldn't be any stranger feeling than knocking on the private quarters of a professor who used to teach you when you were at school. At night. After hours. When all the students were going to be abed. Hermione had already been saddled with trying to get used to being the youngest professor on staff at Hogwarts and all the jokes that came with it. But visiting Severus Snape after hours?

She wasn't sure there was a way to get used to this.

Worrying at her lip nervously, she straightened her robes before lifting her hand to knock again, firmly. Perhaps he'd already gone to bed. Perhaps he was out. Perhaps he was sleeping upside down in a cave somewhere? Her thoughts tended towards the ridiculous.

If the potion wasn't so important, or such a big part of her lesson plan for the next day .. well. She wouldn't even be here. But he was the only one in the castle who could help her, and the only one who she thought would be awake at this hour. Talk about between a rock and a hard place. )

No, Professor Severus Snape wasn't actually hanging from the ceiling, although any number of his students would have probably thought as such. He still wore the same, black, billowing robes after all these years, and yes, he still resembled a bat when he came stalking down Hogwart's hallways. His hair might have been a bit shorter, and perhaps not quite as greasy as it used to be, but more than that... he often appeared tired. Snape wasn't quite the frightening professor he had been when Hermione was a student there. Oh, he was still quite intimidating, and he cut an imposing figure, but it was almost as if his life's work was no longer scaring his first years, and even the oldest students.

Things had changed, of course. Besides the obvious physical differences, he also sported a wound, always hidden beneath the high collar of his robes. Magic had not been able to hide the scar, a slightly jagged line that went all the way around his neck. Magic had saved him from that fatal slash around his neck, and the bites from Nagini. But the physical wounds were not the only things that had left him feeling a bit drained. Now that Voldemort was truly gone, and Harry Potter lived on... what was the point of it all? He was once again the potions professor at Hogwarts, Minvera the Headmistress. But there was no longer any reason to protect Harry, who was grown up now, anyway. Sometimes, he thought that perhaps he should have died that day. Yet he lived on.

He was still awake that night, but dressed in dark sleeping clothes, beneath a dark robe. When he heard that knock, he considered ignoring it. Nobody visited him this late... unless it was some sort of emergency, perhaps. With a sigh, he stood from his desk and swept to the door. After opening it, he again sighed, but inwardly, and narrowed his dark eyes. "Miss Granger," he spoke coolly, "are you aware of the late hour?"

Things were, of course, different after the war. It would be impossible for them not to be; they all sported scars, some more physical than others. Hermione often woke up shouting in the middle of the night at some perceived terror. She wore a glamour spell over the scar on her forearm that Bellatrix had given her, when she was forced to wear short sleeves in front of students, for fear of upsetting anyone. Harry and Ron appeared in public often, but she was more reclusive; part of the reason she had taken the job at Hogwarts. The war was over and she wasn't required to be in the limelight for the reconstruction. Educating the young minds would be doing her part, for now.

It took all of her courage not to quake in front of him, reminding herself that they were equals now, and while he might be scary, he was just a man. A tired man, from the looks of it. He had a right to be somewhat bothered; she had disturbed him.

"Yes, I'm sorry," she began, biting back a stutter and forcing herself to look him straight in the eye. Hermione was startled to notice she had to look up a good deal more than she expected. "I had a question about a potion I'm intending to use tomorrow in one of my lessons and the effect it may have on students; the books I'm using for references aren't quite clear on that count and I want to be certain before I use it."

Deep breath. She can do this. There isn't anything wrong with what she is about to say. She is Hermione Granger, for gods sake, and twenty one years-old. An adult, a professor at Hogwarts. "May I come in?"

It still was not easy for Snape to think of Hermione as anyone but the know-it-all student he'd once had. He'd made an effort not to see any of the 'Golden Trio' since the battle of Hogwarts, but unfortunately, working in the school together meant he could only avoid her for so long. And for Hermione's part, she hadn't gone out of her way to seek him out, either. But if he had to see any of the three former students on a regular basis, he supposed Hermione is the less trying on his nerves.

Until she came to his door at the middle of the night.

Snape considered her words for a moment, deciding if he could just get away with closing the door in her face. But try as he might not to, he couldn't help but feel something akin of... what? Flattery? She had come to him, after all. His expression hardly changed as he nodded once, stepping aside to allow her entrance.

It only took a moment for her to sweep past him into his rooms, resisting the urge to take a quick look around. It would certainly ruin her adult image if she was caught staring and looking for signs of vampirism. Besides, she'd already invaded his privacy enough. Instead she'll settle herself promptly on his couch, turning towards the fireplace. If the fire is already lit, she'll warm her hands; if not, she'll light it quickly with a nonverbal spell to make things a bit more comfortable. It felt strange to actually be there, but no more strange than teaching classes at Hogwarts, giving away House Points or detention, and grading essays. Facilitating good relationships with the rest of the faculty was required, for her job, right?

"Thank you," she murmured, once she was settled, gesturing to the seat next to her. Even Hermione Granger can manage to make herself at home and bossy in Severus Snape's personal chambers. "It should only take a moment, and then I'll leave you to --" Ah. Right. What was it that Severus Snape did at this time of night? He hadn't been sleeping. For the first time, she surveyed him as a person, not as a former student.

Perhaps he'd been reading a good book. If she was particularly daring, she'd ask him about it.

"The potion I wanted to ask you about was Felix Felicis. We had Professor Slughorn during that time and he .. wasn't as instructive as I would have hoped; neither are the texts in the library that I can find on the matter, or any in my personal collection. I want to know if the potion will interfere badly with a luck charm I plan on casting before the class."
