The tl;dr version is that he lived during the late 1800s, was court martialled and shot in the early 1900s, and fought for Britain in South Africa as an Australian during a time when Australia itself was only just starting to come together.

[ they'd warned him that this particular type of witch liked to play with its victims, dangle them from invisible threads and pull and twist them into impossible shapes, shapes that no human body is capable of withstanding, at least not for very long. he'd insisted, though, and at first he'd held his own pretty well, but the moment she and hansel were both distracted the witch had ben snagged by his ankle and hanging upside-down while pretending she'd been beaten. they'd realized it almost too late, and once hansel had gotten him down gretel had shoved him into a closet and shut the door.

it's about an hour before she opens the door again, face streaked with sweat and a fair amount of grime and blood (not all of it her own). she holds out a hand to help him to his feet, giving him a subtle check over for injuries, although they'll need to get somewhere with better light for her to really see. ]

He's had many visitors at night when he had nothing but devilgrass to burn. Cuthbert. Alain. Aileen. Sheemie. None of them spoke, as none of them were really there. It's the same with Susan, he tells himself.

The more he tells himself that, the more it sticks in his heart and stings.
