[Cycling gives you a complex, Shuu. One that involves never getting what you want but still obsessively working hard for it in hopes that you do. Sometimes life sucks.

Not that he voices that out, because Shuu's next question isnalso predictable, and not really that suprising to hear. He probably really hasn't noticed, huh?]

Mmmhm. Oh, but I'm not telling you who.

[He has a lot of friends, sure, but most people probably would guess one in particular. He wouldn't be surprised if Shuu thought the same.]

[Shuu doesn't really know who Teshima's friends are. As people in different grades, they lead different lives at school. But does Teshima have a lot of friends who are girls...?

It's possible. But a different possibility springs inescapably to mind—especially when Shuu remembers all those times he's seen Teshima with an arm slung around that person's shoulders.

He might be assuming far too much. And either way, it's not his business. Shuu nods.]

That's fine. I won't make you to say it.

[Sliding his messenger bag back onto his shoulder, Shuu gathers his trash in one hand and prepares to get up from the bench.]

[That makes him laugh, even if it's not really funny. Shuu being Shuu is as serious as he expected, yet the lack of protest is characteristic of him.]

Not even a bit curious, huh?

[Then again, Shuu was never the type to gossip about love lives. That was Teshima the whole time. He gathers up his trash and follows suit, looking for somewhere to toss it as he continues his sudden interview.]

So this person you 'maybe' are interested in, what are they like?

[Shuu pauses on his way to the trash, waiting for Teshima to catch up with him.]

You said you weren't telling, right?

[It's not that he isn't curious. He's just trying to be respectful. But they're back to talking about him, so perhaps his attempt at consideration backfired.

There's a pause before he responds. How does he begin to describe the person who's always had his heart?

With a soft look in his eyes, he comes out with the following answer:]

An open book. They're someone whose emotions show clearly on their face.

[Minato's surprise, Minato's embarrassment, Minato's tears and Minato's joy... all of these things linger in Shuu's memory. But it's the last one—Minato's expression of earnest enjoyment while doing kyudo—that really moved Shuu's heart. He smiles faintly as he continues,]

And when they love something, they give it their all.

[The fondness in his expression is more telling than his words, if he were honest. Shuu can tell him terrible things about him, and he would still know how much he liked his not-so-mysterious person.

He wants to be jealous, but all it really does is make him feel a bit resigned, even as he nods in understanding.]

So that's the kind of person you like, huh? Sounds like a good choice to me.

[He can't dislike anyone who gives their all for what they love, after all.]

So what's holding you back?

[His smile fades when he's asked that question, but his tone doesn't waver. The look in his eyes is sharp. Determined.]

I'm not holding back. My goal is to shoot through their heart someday.

[That's not his only goal and certainly not his only reason for shooting, but it is one of them. Once he becomes a better archer than even Takigawa Masaki, Minato—who's always loved kyudo from the bottom of his heart—will surely take notice.]

Don't let people hear you say that out of context.

[That sounds like a crime somehow. Still, he gets the idea, if only because Shuu is a kyudo nut, so of course he uses kyudo metaphors.

He must really like him.]

How do you plan on doing that though?

[Shuu's not concerned about his wording. For better or for worse his teammates already heard something similar. And he isn't too concerned about Teshima's question, either, although... he probably should be.]

By working towards our shared goal. We're both looking for the same thing. I'd like to show them something impressive.





[This is the least secret secret crush ever.]

[.............. It's way too obvious. Waaaaay too obvious.]

[Rather, if he's anything like Shuu, he might not even notice the crush underneath all that.]

[Annnd that causes him to lose some of his fire, spark fading from his eyes. He pauses before he responds.]

I told them they're important, and that my life hasn't been the same since we met.

[Though that conversation was mostly about archery. Then again...

What's the difference between love and kyudo, anyway?]

[... Saying it like that really does sound like a confession, though well... He wonders if that was really mentioned in the realm of one.

He wants to point that out, but he looks at Shuu's face, trying to gauge if he should. He's not sure what to make of that, after all.]

What did they say to that?

[Shuu just stands there, still holding onto his trash, and thinks for a long minute. And then another minute. And then another.

It's not that he doesn't remember what Minato said. But...]



If I told you what they said, it'd give away who they are.

[As though it's not already obvious??]

Hmmmm... I suppose fair is fair.

[Since even if it's obvious, Teshima not telling him who he likes means Shuu is free to keep his not-so-secret a secret.

He throws his trash first while waiting for Shuu to make a decision, before he nods.]

I suppose giving advice is pretty hypocritical since I haven't made a move yet either. Maybe your plan will work out far better.

[So Teshima ended up agreeing with him in the end, more or less. Somehow it doesn't feel completely satisfying.

Still in thought, Shuu throws away his own trash, mentally comparing his situation to Teshima's. He's still unsure who Teshima has feelings for. He's also uncertain about the depth of those feelings. His senpai sounded as though he'd already given up—resigned himself to the fact he'd never have that person's attention.

Shuu almost did that, too, once. Earlier in the year he thought that everything was over; that Minato's path had diverged from his path and they'd gradually start drifting apart. But then Minato made it clear that he did want to be friends, and Shuu decided once and for all that he wouldn't let this person go. Even if fate threatened to tear them apart, he'd just create a new path. So... there's only one thing to say here.

Dusting off his hands, Shuu turns and faces his senpai.]

Let's both give it our all.

[If they both work hard to impress that special person, then everything will work out. Possibly. Maybe.]

[... That was kind of sad, hearing that from Shuu. Not because of the words itself, but the fact that Teshima has to be cheered on by the guy he likes to confess to him and he doesn't even know it.

He's not sure how to respond to that, really.]

Since they're on the topic though, he might as well go all the way the lame train and try to see how far he can fake it.]

[He forcefully switches, deciding to make it sound like a game now, so it doesn't feel too... honest.]

[Thanks, he says. But something feels a little off. Shuu isn't used to giving encouragement to people who are older than him, and he's also not used to talking about romance, so it makes sense that things have grown awkward.

Teshima's question comes as a surprise. He tries to picture such a scenario, but he has a hard time doing it. In the end he shakes his head.]

I'm not sure that's possible.

[Not because his heart is immovable. But falling in love with some random classmate on the spot? Hard to imagine.]

I don't know my classmates too well. If there's no connection between us, then something like that wouldn't leave an impression.

So there's no chance for a classmate... What about someone from your club? Like a teammate.

[The twins come to mind, but his impression of them was that they were largely fans and less romantic interests. Still, in. Hypothetical scenario it works.]

What would make you consider them?

[Shuu snaps his head up, meeting Teshima's gaze with a start. Both of eyebrows raise. A teammate?

Like most other sports and martial arts, kyudo is segregated by sex. Shuu's teammates are all male. Teshima assumed something about him just now.

There's no need to get defensive about it. The assumption isn't wrong; Shuu's just surprised Teshima made it in the first place. Since Teshima isn't acting like it's a big deal, Shuu won't treat it like it is either.

But still... a teammate??

After wrestling with that thought for a long moment:]

I don't think of any of them have plans to sweep me off my feet.

[It comes out sounding flat. None of those dudes are in love with him. ... Probably.]

[Well, that was hard to read. It's pretty much not showing his thoughts on the possibility, and instead on the impossibility of it.]

Anything can happen, after all. Are you really going to discount it so quickly?

[Not that... he thinks that they would try, but it's hard to tell if he's saying that because he misread Shuu and he might not actually like guys, or he's just certain that the possibility is unlikely.]

[Anything can happen, but the chances of his senpai on the kyudo team developing a special interest in him seem abysmally low. It's so strange an idea that Shuu immediately discards it, which leaves only the twins as potential admirers. But even though they clearly respect him as an archer, he can't see them professing their love. He isn't that important, is he?

Shuu can't picture what Teshima's describing, but even if he could it wouldn't matter. He already knows what his answer would be, and it's not because they're all men. It's because...]

I don't see them that way.

[They don't get his heart racing. Not the way Minato does.]

There's probably nothing they could do to change my heart.

[He hums, but well-- it's clearer where Shuu stands in regards to that. Guess he isn't the type to consider dating someone who was interested in him, regardless of how close they are.

Asking about himself is too obvious, so he--- just doesn't. He's not ready to hear that rejection yet.]

Well, knowing what-- or who-- you want so strongly is also a good trait. I'll make sure to lend a listening ear if you ever need it.

[So that's the end of that conversation. They're free to move away from the trash and continue their walk home now. Shuu does just that, but as he falls into step beside his senpai he's not sure how to feel. Were those questions just for fun? Or did Teshima ask for a reason? Could it be possible he trying to get ideas for his own confession?

Glancing at Teshima from the corner of his eye, a few different thoughts flit through Shuu's head. It was Teshima who brought up the idea of falling for a teammate. He also brought up the idea that Shuu might be open to having a man as his partner. Putting those facts together, Shuu has to wonder if Teshima see himself in him.

He's curious. He's too polite to come right out and ask, but he's curious. So when Teshima offers those kind words, instead of responding with the usual Thank you, Shuu ends up saying something else.]

It's the same for me.

[He catches Teshima's eye, meaning his words sincerely.]

If there's something you want to talk about, I'll always listen.

[Even if it's something Aoyagi-san can't know about.]

[That one is a little more genuine that the previous one, though not really all that different at the same time. In any case, at least he already confirmed what he needed to confirm, and it was-- well. That.]

[He says instead, rubbing the back of his neck as he looks away, the sincerity making him embarrassed for being such a terrible senpai in comparison.]

Here I thought I could tease you a bit, but you're so sincere. I don't think your future lover can win against you.

[Shuu doesn't blush, but he does avert his gaze when hears the words "future lover." Now that's one way to refer to Minato. He likes the sound of that, and it shows in the way he smiles to himself, embarrassed but pleased.]

Senpai's future lover is the lucky one.

[From the beginning, Teshima has always looked out for him, even though they're not even in the same club at school. Shuu can only imagine how attentive Teshima would be in a relationship. The thought of being left behind gives him a slight pang of loneliness, but he can endure it. Teshima deserves to have his feelings returned.]

[So, maybe not lucky, but close enough. He looks back at Shuu, sees that expression, and feels his own soften a little. He really does like the guy, huh?

... He hopes that it really can work out for them, regardless of his own feelings.]
