The Bittersweet Love Meme


Happy endings are what we crave, right? If we see a couple we like in movies or in real life, we root for them to make it. Why, then, is there such a desire to see love that's tragic, doomed, or bittersweet? People watch sad movies like Titanic, and they know what will happen, but somehow that makes it more poignant. This goes all the way back to tales like Romeo and Juliet. There's just something about a good cry that makes us feel that much more human and even more receptive of beauty.

This meme is equal parts tragedy and beauty, sweet and bitter. Some prompts may be triggering, so tread with caution.

How to Play

Prompts

1. Romeo and Juliet: The classic starcrossed lovers. You can't be together because of warring factions, and you're at the end of your rope. You have to do something.
   
2. Not the Same: Angel and demon. Human and god. Whatever the combination, you're not of the same kind. This probably won't end well, especially if one of you is immortal and the other's not, or there's some kind of power difference.
3. Past Wounds: One of you was hurt in the past, and it was so bad that it's hurting your relationship. Can you be healed by love, or is this something that can't ever be fixed?
4. Bad Things: This bad thing isn't in the past. This happened when you were together, and now it's affecting how your lover behaves toward you.
5. Loss: Perhaps it's a loss only one of you suffered, like a family member. Or it's something the both of you share, like the loss of a child. Sometimes, together you can pull through. Other times, it's just too much to bare.
6. I Can't Live Without You: Whether it be through injury, curse, terminal illness, one of you is dying. There's only a limited time left. Will you spend your last days with the person you love, or will you end it for their own good, so they don't have to watch you die?
7. Unfaithful: One of you has been unfaithful, even if you still love your significant other. Can this wrong ever be forgiven?
8. Gone Away: You're being torn apart by location and distance.
9. A New Start: The sweet part of bitter. Where one relationship ends, another begins. But is your heart too hurt to accept new love?

Pietersburg was pretty firmly under British control at the time (if not rule, exactly), so there likely would've been a lot of people from all over the British Empire around, most of them soldiers of some sort. ]

There's something of a smile on Harry's face.

The poem's not his best work, he thinks, he's done better, but for a man facing the firing squad in the morning this is about as good as it's going to get. And at the very least, the damnable hammering's ceased; the builders' outside the prison finally done with the coffins for him and Handcock.

Just as well, that. Perhaps those men are sleeping soundly now, knowing that their part in this whole dirty business is done- and a dirty business it is, but then again, he'd never expected anything more of it. Not from the battles, or the British, or the Boers.

The candlelight flickers, briefly, but it's enough to send shadows chasing each other madly around his cell. There's little space for a man to stretch out here but for the bed, but he's not so keen to sleep just yet. Not when he'll be sent to a more permanent sort of rest once the sun breaks upon the veldt.

Still, it seems like there's not much else to do. He's written his last, that much is for certain, but now the hours until dawn stretch out before him. Handcock's been snoring away for the last hour or so in the next cell over; Harry can hear him from where he sits, and for a while he wonders how Handcock's wife and his little son will be when they get the news. If they get the news. Witton- poor, young Witton- isn't likely to be able to help, there, not sentenced to life as he's been. The Major might, but the Major's likely to be a busy man for a good while, considering how this whole mess has turned out.

He rocks back on his chair, watching the light and the shadows. He'll go with the guards when they come for him in the morning, he knows, he'll go, but for now...

For now, he supposes, he yet lives.

Whatever it may be, she is every bit the petulant child lately, filled with a wanderlust she cannot properly explain. She obeys as she always has, as she is compelled to, but more often than not, there is a contrary flash in her eyes. She is edgy, petulant; she is insistent.

Perhaps this doesn't make the best case for her proposed independence, but she cannot help herself.
