Yanli was used to arrogance. She'd been raised in an environment thick with it, even if her particular sect was more open and welcoming than many. That being said, she was the Darkling's polar opposite in how none of it seemed to have stuck on her.

"The old gentleman who owned those books was a bit of an eccentric."

Said with fondness rather than condescension.

He chuckled at her words, the understatement of it. An odd sound, one rarely heard in Ravka but this far from home, from the Darkling and his legacy, he allowed himself the indulgence. The Darkling instead scooped up the rest of the scrolls, his care with them belying his casual dismissal of their contents.

"An eccentric," he repeated. "That's a far kinder word than the one that first came to mind."

"One should not speak ill of the dead."

Not that she was in the habit of speaking ill of the living, either.

She took a few steps closer to him, taking the fact that he kept speaking with her as something of an invitation, though she made sure not to come so close as to risk invading his personal space.

"Did you know him?"

It would explain why this stranger was sat there poring over all these now-neglected scrolls.

The lie springs easily to his lips, and with it its kernel of truth. "No, but my grandfather did." A pause as he finished securing the scrolls under his arm, and he gestured to the house. "To hear it told, the man saved my grandfather from a marauder during his travels. An spent an evening regaling my grandfather with stories of scholars from his land."

The Darkling shrugged with a small smile. He'd been too busy then dealing with a threat to Ravka to take the man on his invitation to visit his homeland, and time passed, until now, until the Darkling had found himself in one of his moods again, searching and scholarly, wanting to understand the source of Grisha power. And so he'd headed East.

"I am more of a scholar than my grandfather was. So here I am. Looking to learn how other scholars see the world, and the power that connects it."

"You might have better luck in my family's library."

Theirs was far from the most impressive collection among the clans, but at least the writings were by people who understood cultivation practices and the philosophies that guided them, which was more than what could be said about the scrolls the Darkling was currently studying.

"We are cultivators. Living in harmony with the world, and maintaining the balance within it and ourselves, is what we devote our lives to."

An outsider would hardly be welcome to peruse any writings that he wanted, but she was sure that some could be safely shared should this intriguing stranger care to pay Lotus Pier a visit.
