This is the fourteenth mission that HYDRA has requested Yelena to work alongside the Winter Soldier. They're formidable as a team, able to do what a squadron cannot. No rebels this time, but a well-defended Jade Clan stronghold that had contained an item that HYDRA had wanted badly enough to send them in. Negotiations, such as they were, had fallen through.

HYDRA was not accustomed to "no" as an answer, and Dai Kumo's men were scattered in pieces before the item was secured. The Jade Dragon would learn better the next time HYDRA asked.

Yelena moves into the safehouse with cat-steps, bending down to unfasten her boots before she reaches for the case the item is tucked away into. She doesn't know what the parcel is. She just knows that HYDRA wants it.

[ tldr - Sebastian is a demon who makes deals for souls. He will contract with a "Master" to carry out their deepest, darkest desire and he will eat their soul when that contract is due, even if it takes all their mortal life.

Sebastian portrays himself as a servant, but he will exert dominance if asked/ordered to, or if he thinks his current Master is being unacceptably weak, and going against the contract they agreed on. Then he will dominate in order to remind the character of their place.

You were summoned to help me break the cycle and, in return, you shall have my soul. The words repeat in her head, over and over again, like a passage from a novel she knows well, except these words do not bring comfort nor peace of mind. Perhaps, when she first said them they did, but now there is a feeling of dread--a feeling like she has made a mistake.

The purpose of demons is clear enough--their intentions even more so--and it is with this knowledge, coupled with doubt in her mind, that she begins to second guess her decisions thus far. Could Sebastian truly help her break the cycle? Could he truly prevent reincarnation if her soul were to be consumed by a demon? From what she has gathered, from the recorded history kept and sealed away, none before her have ever tried anything so drastic to escape their fate. Was it because they knew it was futile, that any attempt to change destiny would amount to nothing?

She finds herself regarding Sebastian with a look of mild...apprehension. Zelda looks away before he can sense something is amiss, yet she knows he is aware of the sudden change in her demeanour. She had not been the same since their return from their journey far north.

The princess rises from her chair, gently pushing away her plate; hardly a morcel has been touched and she places the silk napkin onto the table, wrinkled from when she'd been gripping it in her lap, taking care to make sure no one saw such a subtle gesture. She looks to one of the handmaidens, a silent sign that she is to ready the princess for bed.

"I will retire for the night," she says and several servants of the castle emerge to clear away the table, taking everything back into the kitchens. She avoids Sebastian's gaze as she turns to leave, holding her breath as she passes through the arched threshold that separates the grand dining room from the stone corridors.

Sebastian has lived long enough, with plenty of Masters, to be able to tell when his newest one is having doubts about their little arrangement.

Granted, the Mistress does her best to hide such unsightly thoughts. But she is still mortal and he can feel the stolen looks even when his back is turned, hear the faintest pause in the way Princess Zelda speaks around him even as he pours her tea or dutifully sets out the royal clothes and the fine jewelry to be worn today. Naturally he will watch her more discretely, weighing her actions, the weight of her words. Some sort of doubt, of weakness, festering within her like poison....which, as it happens, goes against the terms of the contract. A demon has no use for a weak, wishy-washy Master, after all.

He waits until the servants leave before he follows her, at first at a distance. That distance is gradually closed with each elegant stride of her "butler" until she'll hear his voice practically tickling at the shell of her ear with an intimacy that can only be afforded between a demon and the soul he has laid claim to.

"My dear Mistress," the voice purrs, deep and accented, crafted to fit in with high society. "Begging your pardon, but you mustn't retire just yet."

A gloved hand wraps around her wrist, gripping tight, not enough to hurt but enough to make a point.

"We must talk," Sebastian adds. "You hardly ate, Your Majesty. You are distracted and I must wonder what I can do to correct that."

To guide Zelda back on the proper course, to which she has sold her soul and promised him a feast for the ages.

Her steps are measured as she walks down the corridor, walking along the long passageways and trying to appear as though she is not hastening to the refuge of her bedchambers. She thinks of her room as if it will give her solace, even protection, against a demon--a childish thought that passes as quickly as it came, yet she wants to cling to it so desperately.

The princess is not even aware that her maidservants, the ones she requested accompany her, are no longer present. When she does detect their absence, a cold seeps through her the likes she's only felt once in her entire life and it is now that fear, the one she has held off for as long as she could, has come barreling forward like a landslide and threatens to consume her; to drown her.

Before she can even quicken her pace, before she can seek refuge, Sebastian's presence is so close that she already knows escape is futile. His words are purred into her ear and she feels a chill overcome her, the kind that has her nearly stumble and intakes a quiet shuddering breath. The grip he has around her wrist is not one that would mean harm, at least not immediately, but she is aware of his intentions and is still powerless to stop him.

"I was simply not hungry," she says as plainly as she can, doing her best not to falter before him. She knows he can sense her fear. "There is nothing for you to correct. I would simply like to retire."

There. Her voice wavers and she cannot quell the slight tremble that passes through her.

One of the hardest things about becoming Bucky Barnes again was learning to do things for herself again. Being the Winter Soldier was horrible, but it was easy in the sense that she never had to - never was allowed to think for herself. Being Bucky means not having every choice made for her, and sometimes it's exhausting and she just can't, and that's where this arrangement with Sam comes in. The first time they did it, it was kind of messy and accidental; Sam told her to do something, and she was so tired that she just slipped into a headspace where she just did what he told her and it was fine, it was a relief, but he kind of freaked out when he realized what had happened and insisted that if it was going to happen again, there needed to be rules.

Several negotiations later, they have the arrangement: sometimes, when Bucky is too mentally exhausted by the weight of being a person, she asks Sam to take over for a little while. They don't do anything too crazy, mostly normal domestic day-to-day things, but it helps to not have to make decisions like what to eat or how to spend her time.

She needs it now. They've wrapped up a mission and Sam is finishing up the debriefing, and she feels the pressure in her head, almost an actual pain, that says she needs a break from having to do everything for herself for a bit. They're sharing a hotel room as a base of operations, so she heads there, knowing that Sam will be there soon. She puts on the ring he gave her, the one that's a signal that says she needs him to take charge again, and she sits on the floor next to the bed and lets her head clear while she waits for him.

Bucky's been through some shit. Sam's been through plenty himself. He's lost people, not least of which has been one Steve Rogers, who would be far better placed to be able to help Buck. Sam knows that pain isn't a competition. But seriously, what Sam's been through compared to what Bucky's been through is like comparing a handful of sand to an entire planet.

He cares about Bucky. A lot. Even if there are days when neither of 'em wants to acknowledge that they give a damn about each other.

So he hates that Bucky needs this....... but he's glad, really glad, that they've found a way for Sam to help her take a little of the weight off her shoulders now and then.

The key reader thing bleeps at him, then it bloops at him. He curses under his breath and turns the card around. There, that's better. He backs through the door, bags of takeout under one arm, plonks it all on the bed as the door closes itself behind him, then sees the ring.

Gotcha.

"Hey," he says warmly. "General Singh was okay. She understood what happened to the window. I think she might be my favorite so far. I'll get this set out, you go wash up."

Ah, wait. Should go into more detail. They've never gone so far as Bucky needing to be told when to breathe or anything, but more detail can't hurt. The fewer choices she has to make, the better.

"Pee if you need to. Wash your hands and face, then come back."

Any other time, she might dig into General Singh's response to their window incident, find out maybe what they could get away with, but she lets that wash past her for now. She doesn't have to know parameters like that right now. She has orders: easy, casual orders, which she acknowledges by bringing herself to her feet and following them. Following through does not take long, and soon she's back in the room with him. It's simple to fall into a state of relaxed readiness, following him with her gaze silently as she waits for more orders.

Whew, she's down pretty far, isn't she. Well, this ain't the first time the two of them have dealt with something difficult together. They'll cope.

She comes back into the room with him, and he gives her a smile. There's a little ricketty table at the end of the beds. He nods at it. "Take a seat. Any eating problems I need to know about right now? Any stomach troubles or anything?"

It's okay if she doesn't answer in words. He just needs to have a baseline understanding of how much food to get her to eat. No good making sure she has a good sized serve of protein and vegetables and carbs and all that crap, if she's just gonna throw it up again in an hour.
