Not just a job — a mission

MORE THAN JUST A JOB It's only business, nothing personal...at least, that's how it started. You were pegged as the right one for a job that involves this person; your task could be positive, such as protecting them with their consent or without it, guiding them from point a to point b, and the like - or, as seedier transactions tend to go, it could be negative. You have to take them back to a place they really don't want to return to, you have to be a jailor, or you even have to be their assassin. At the very least, helping or hurting, you'll be compensated generously (by money or, you know, by not being killed off). And that was all that mattered. Until they mattered. They could have shown you something you never knew existed in the world or in yourself. They could have done any number of things, yet they've won you and your feelings over. Your priorities just may shift because of this, but will their view of you do the same as soon as they learn why you were around them in the first place? For your own gain? Will they be able to forgive you? Even if they can, will they be able to see you the way you see them? Comment with your character, preferences, role (the one with the job or the one who is the job), etc. Reply to others. Thread.

He can’t believe he got caught. No, no he can believe that, what he can’t believe is this man caught him. Like it was the easiest thing in the world, like he hadn’t just walked past all of the Burial Mounds traps and taken the monster that lived there captive. Of course he was exaggerating, it wasn’t that easy, the Yiling Patriarch wouldn’t have made it that easy. But over several centuries he had lived in that place, like a horrible nightmare standing over the Cultivation World, an urban legend.

Since when did cultivators take on urban legends? He hadn’t harmed anyone recently (not that he knew about), so what did they want with him? His would be captor was silent like a rock, barely even spared Wei Wuxian two sentences before attacking him. In his defense, Wei Wuxian hadn’t made the walk up the Burial Mounds easy on him. He fought well, incredible really, it was interesting to watch. His Guqin was strong but his playing stronger. It was like watching a dance.

A dance that quickly grew frustrating when he turned that Guqin on him.

Those white robes had been painfully familiar to look at, the fighting style of the one before him even more so. But, it was the forehead ribbon that tugged even more painfully at his heart. Like an old wound ripped open that one dumped sand into and ground against his nerves.

He can understand the Cultivation World wanting him, or more accurately wanting his head hanging. But, of all the Sects, why was it the Lan’s that had to come for him? He would have thought by now they would have wanted nothing to do with him, but then again how many years had passed since he last had any sort of connection to them?

Since he brought the death of the only person that ever actually defended him?

He sighs and shakes his head, lifting his gaze toward the blue sky. Ironically the man before him resembled that person far too much. How cruel of fate. Not only did it send a Lan to drag him from his mountain but it sent someone who was clearly a relative or close descendant of the past Hanguang-Jun. Lan’s…. no one would believe him if he told them that they had a cruel streak when they wanted to. When they wanted to burn someone from the inside out.

He rolls his head back down and looks to the white robes before him, clouds printed into that fine fabric. They had been walking for a while now, unending. From the direction he assumed he was being dragged back to Gusu. He happened to catch Wei Wuxian on a particularly bad day, not that it would be hard to overpower him. If he hadn’t caught him off guard with his appearance, his cultivation was far stronger and would have worn him down before his body gave in. Demonic cultivation was poisonous to the one who used it, Wei Wuxian could fight well but for an incense time at most.

He could have used the Yin Tiger Seal, but doing so would have caused a lot more damage than him just escaping later. Besides, he didn’t enjoy using it and he’d tried to retire it. He hadn’t quite figured out a way to destroy it yet. Letting out a heavy breath he weighs the risk of using it now to just escape, now that they’d wandered fairly far from Yiling.

He’d have to wait for a proper chance, his body was too exhausted to pick a fight. Picking up the pace a bit he steps in time with the stranger and tilts his head at him. “Oh honorable cultivator that has captured this one, don’t you intend to say what you plan to do with this one? You’ve captured the monster of Yiling, the fearsome Yiling Patriarch, and you’re walking down the road with him? Are you leading me to an execution?” He spins, rope wrapping around his body as he walks backwards looking to the man's face.

Did he have to look so much like the other?

“Are you even going to tell me your name?”

[She can't believe she needs a bodyguard. Cannot. Fucking. Believe. It's embarrassing! Bodyguards are for squishy little mortals who can't take care of themselves. Flan hasn't been either of those since she was six years old and a light spot of human sacrifice made her an avatar of the Vast. She's been powerful for so long that she barely remembers what it was like to be anything else.

But... she's not the only person who became an avatar. As powerful as her god might be, there are others with their own powers. If forced to examine things (as she currently is being forced to do), she might begrudgingly admit that her own powers are more defensive than offensively driven. After all, most of her problems and conflicts have been solved by calling upon mother abyss to take those troubles and throw them into an endless vast pit from which they'll fall for all eternity. And on the rare occasion where she might be outnumbered, she can always throw herself into the void instead and deposit herself somewhere else, far away from whatever threat there is.

But again, she's not the only person who became an avatar. And right now, she's maybe kind of accidentally pissed off a couple of Hunt avatars who want her dead. Flan's pretty hearty but as much as she might be long-lived, 'invulnerable' isn't actually on the list. A few bullets to the skull will kill her as easily as any human, and the Hunt avatars are well-outfitted. She's already had one close call that's left her with a distant ringing in her right ear and a powder burn on her cheek. Flan really can't afford a second mistake.

So, here she is at the train station with a hiking pack full of essentials, waiting for the professional Uncle Simon hired to hide her out somewhere and help lay an ambush to deal with the Hunt avatars when they inevitably track her down and come in for the kill-
