The Daemon Meme

In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (see: The Golden Compass Movie, His Dark Materials on HBO, the books), every person has a creature called a daemon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Daemons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).
Basic Daemon Facts:

 

• They take the shape of animals
• They can talk, no matter what their shape
• Children's daemons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
• Neither the person or the daemon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
• They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
• If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
• Being physically apart from one's daemon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
• Daemons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but daemons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's daemon without permission is a terrible violation.
• If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa

How it works:

Just design a daemon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a top-level, with your muse's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's daemons and let your daemons interact too.

[Rey's daemon settled in the form of a caracal named Xerxii. This form proved to be a bit hard to adjust at first, since back in Jakku they both prefered Xerxii to take smaller forms as they scavenged for interesting items to sell at Niima Outpost.

Like Rey he can be a bit quiet and distant at first, even quite fierce at battle. But as soon as he warms to people he's been known to show a more playful side to him.]

Why was it that Poe found himself the butt of the joke when it came to the kind of friendly ribbing that happened around campfires after a successful mission? He didn't mind at all and neither he nor Ka'rta felt any mean spirit in it, but sometimes it just got a bit habitual.

"What's so bad about a lovebird?" He threw a gesture across the flames at the Gungan opposite. "Jesmoes has a fish!"

A flying fish, but it was still a little ridiculous for a pilot.

"Too obvious!" Wexley dismissed.

[In mundane settings, Phoenix's daemon is a blue border collie with heterochromia named Faun. Faun needs a moment to warm to new people, but once she does, she's always excitable and eager to play and has a wagging tail that just won't stop.

In settings that allow for fantastical daemons, Phoenix's daemon is a literal phoenix named Spark. Spark has a bad habit of bursting into flame, especially in the beginning of cases, and Phoenix has to wear fire-resistant clothes and avoid flammable hair products or aftershave.]

[Dahlia’s daemon is an orchid mantis named Belladonna. Dahlia keeps Belladonna very close, usually camouflaged as an ornament in her hair or hidden in her clothes. A lot of the time she’s left with the appearance of having no daemon at all, but most people are too polite to comment. Those that do comment, she brushes off by saying that her daemon is small and shy like her and takes a while to warm up to people.]

( When his temple was burned down - before he went into the dark - someone told Grogu that keeping Kiqua hidden was the most important thing for him to do. So, for decades, that's what Grogu did, and the daemon that used to fly and dance in the air was tucked away in the corner of his metal pram for no one else to see. It would be decades later that their father would find them and she would feel safe enough to fly again.

Kiqua is a scaly whisp of a creature, and she is less than a third of the size of Grogu himself. She had two wings and four sets of claws, somewhat resembling some type of flying lizard that is rarely seen in the galaxy. Her back is speckled with dots, and she enjoys changing her hide's color to keep Grogu amused. Since they're still children, she can change into other creatures, but this is the shape she's most comfortable in. And no, her grasp of speaking Basic is no better than Grogu's, unfortunately. )

[Ben's daemon, Nychta, is shifting and unstable even by daemon standards. Her current favored form is being a mynock, perching on Ben's shoulder to keep an eye on things. She's nervous and constantly alert, much like Ben himself is. She hears the same voices he does, and is painfully aware that she can't keep him safe.

When Ben sees Grogu's daemon, he's pleased, and Nychta extends her wings in a greeting. He thinks she's pretty.]

Finn | Star Wars

( Like most stormtroppers, Finn's dæmon was forced to settle early as a hunting dog, and she was conditioned by the First Order to endure long distances away from her human to be a better soldier in the cause. But after his first battle, FN-2187's unnamed dæmon did something highly unusual - it shifted. Before she could be separated from her human and sent back to reconditioning, the two of them helped a rebel pilot escape from the First Order base. The rest is history.

The still-unnamed dæmon has retained the ability to shift, and neither of them know if she will settle again. She tends to take forms as far away from her original canine form as possible, even when it doesn't feel natural. Eagles and big cats tend to be most common, but she's at her best in the form of a white wolf. Both she and Finn try to avoid this, however, because the last thing they want is to make others think that they are still loyal to the First Order. )

It's something completely out of character for both Rey and Xerxii. Smiling so much, showing so much interest on someone. Being this close and making so many questions.

But can someone blame either of them? This is an actual Resistance hero they're helping. A Resistance hero that will deliver the droid with the map to find Luke Skywalker, the myth become a reality.

"Is it something all members of the Resistance can do?" She asks as she takes a seat from the ship they both stole from Unklar. The ship that turned out to be the legendary Millenium Falcon.

Her caracal dares to approach Finn's daemon, craning his neck as he shamelessly sniffs the air that carries the scent from the elegant white wolf. "Do you all change your forms like that?" He asks.

Mona Megistus | Genshin Impact | OTA

[ Mona's daemon is a Long-Eared owl named Vega. Vega would often turn into a simple black cat or an owl for a long time, until she met the old hag. It would seem this effected Mona in a strange way that her daemon thusly turned into an owl and stayed that way. ( Mona unconsciously began to view wisdom and felt like she had to be as cool as her teacher in many ways. As her teacher had a beautiful Barn Owl with crisp white/silver feathers. )

Her daemon often works with the precedence of Pride. Mona has many issues with believing in herself and feeling herself adequate enough - and so she plays herself up rather extra toward others. Whether or not she believes she is as grandeur as she believes herself to be, is up for debate.

Vega on the other hand loves to call her out, although it is taboo to speak to others it is not taboo to speak openly and freely. The two are shared scholars and hold a love for the stars. What Mona knows, Vega - and if you think Mona overshares information. Vega is often the walking dictionary attempting to always one up Mona with her jests. Or often remind Mona of her mistakes. This is because deep down her criticisms of her individual and existence manifested this way... So now her Daemon makes sure to hold her accountable for everything. Mona gets mad, but she actually appreciates it. Vega is her best colleague. ]

[Aziraphale's daemon is a capybara named Ruth. She also speaks with a British accent, but it is significantly less posh than Aziraphale's.]

A heat wave is a perfect excuse to go swimming, if you ask Thor. It's bright and sunny, and quite sticky if you're not near water, but not so miserable that it's unbearable. He strips off his shirt and shoes, plunging into the water with Tanngrisnir on his heels, splashing up water as they go.

Accidentally splashing the capybara he hadn't quite seen until just now. Oops.

"Sorry," Tanngrisnir apologizes to Ruth, shaking his big horned head and spraying more water around her in an arc.

It might be more in keeping with Loki's persona to have a snake daemon, or maybe a wolf, but such is not the case. When he was a child, his companion's form was all over the place, and so was their gender. When Jökulrós settled, though, it was in the form of an arctic hare--always in winter-white--and she made the firm decision to opt for feminine pronouns.

She is a round, pristine ball of fluff, white as an untouched snowbank, but other daemons that come in contact with her, and the rare close friend of Loki's who touches her, can feel a network of scars that runs all along her belly and flanks.

She has a very solid grasp of who she can and cannot trust, though, and Ruth fits clearly into the 'can' category. When Loki passes Aziraphale and his daemon relaxing in the Plaza, Jökulrós is quick to divert her path and come over to huddle in the capybara's shadow.

"...Hello, Aziraphale," Loki says after watching his hare settle in. "I hope you don't object to company. I'm afraid we're going to be here for a minute."

When Ben approaches Aziraphale, Nychta looks at the other daemon with curiosity. Ben hopes that they don't come off as too threatening, given the loth-wolf's massive size and large teeth. His daemon took a long time to settle - abnormally so - but he's proud of the form his soul finally settled as. He supposes the relevan Earth cliche would be "late bloomer".

The wolf lowers her head so as to seem less threatening, ears folded in a position of submission and to let the capybara daemon and her person know that they aren't a threat.

"Sorry if we startled you," says Ben, nervously running a hand through black hair. "Nychta tends to, ah, make a presence of herself.]

Ben Solo/Kylo Ren | Star Wars

[When he was a child, Ben's daemon Nychta tended to be a mynock, which he associated with piloting and with his father. As Kylo Ren, she didn't settle properly due to his general internal turmoil and lack of emotional maturity, but post-TROS she has settled into the form of a black loth-wolf.]

It's a little warm today, but not so hot that Loki is suffering for the heat. Both he and Jökulrós are keeping to the shade, however, and taking it as easy as possible. This means that they are both stretched out comfortably on the soft grass beneath a stand of flowering trees, Loki with his long legs crossed in front of him as he reads from a leatherbound book. The daemon is close by, with what appears to be a dish of shaved ice topped with a few bits of strawberry.
