This means it falls upon your shoulders to teach them, to bridle that ability and mold them in the fashion you deem worthy - for good or for gain. In your eyes, they're a project, your muse... ...something precious, so much so that your feelings for them might be a bit muddled. Weapon, student, tool, prodigy, responsibility, lover: which came first, which rings truest? When the lines get darker and blurrier is when there's a difference in age, experience, power, or other inequalities present. Does your conscience weight too heavily to ever act on your deeper-seeded feelings? Your goals may be too lofty to risk. Or, you may just give in. Comment with your character, your prefs, limits, etc. Reply to others!

[Definitely the teacher. Former coach before the apocalypse hit, but he's game for teaching survival in the apocalypse or resuming teaching normal subjects too. Probably wouldn't make the first move in this case unless he's got a lot of incentive.]

To be fair, it's not like Barry meant to land face first in a garden. But when the Speed Force decides to "save" him by keeping him trapped for years while the world falls to the dead, Barry's pretty sure that fair has long since checked out. The only small saving grace is that he was blasted somewhere towards Virginia (he thinks) which is far enough away from Central City that maybe nobody will recognize him.

His suit is in shambles, torn and burned and the only thing that really survives is the lightning emblem that he quickly hides.

Most of the people don't trust him or avoid him entirely. He's a stranger and in this new world strangers, in particular the kind that appear out of thin air and a crackle of lightning, aren't welcome.

Negan is an outsider too. Barry's pretty sure he was the one who picked him up when he landed, got him some help and backed his story that he just appeared. If he recognized him as the Flash, he never said and Barry is just as grateful for that.

So he finds him regularly now, helping him pick vegetables in the garden or doing repair work on one of the outlying buildings. The work is almost peaceful and it makes it easy to forget that the world outside of the walls has completely fallen to pieces. It's not a world he can hope to save. "Need some help?"

Whoever he is, it's not Negan's place to go around telling it, is it? Mostly because no one would believe him if he said it and also-- well, it's Barry's secret. They've all got them and they should all have the right to keep them within reason.

"You know," he looks up with a slight grin tugging at his lips. It's one that doesn't quite reach his eyes though. "You keep hanging with me, they're never gonna trust you, Barry."

They're never going to trust him or accept him, Negan knows that. Best he can hope for is being allowed to keep living within these walls for the safety of it, so he doesn't have to go face a goddamn dead world all on his lonesome.

"But yeah, sure. Just trying to salvage what we can of this crop. Those whispering assholes did a hell of a number when they came through."

He sketches a shrug in reply, moving to help Negan clear away the damage and debris. "They're never really going to trust me. I mean, a guy falls out of thin air and lightning on a clear day? That's a lot to handle." He's got basic medical skills thanks to his training, but nobody will let him anywhere near the clinic, even when it's clear there's a need for someone to step up.

Negan's never asked, never pried about what he saw and he's also never gone out of his way to freeze Barry out like most of the long time residents of Alexandria. He's probably the closest thing he has to a friend in this new and terrible world.

"Hey," he bends to lift a broken trellis, straightening out what he can, "thank you." For stepping outside of the walls and putting his life on the line to take out Alpha and destabilize the Whisperers, for keeping his secret, for being a friend, Negan can take his pick on what it might be for.

"Yeah, but you got a chance. You're a nice guy." Probably nicer than Negan would have initially assumed a guy could be and survive this hellscape, but there you go. He gives Barry a look over at the thanks.

"Nothing to thank me for." He gives a shrug of his shoulders. "Wasn't gonna leave you out there to die."

... And well, the Whisperers had to be dealt with. Didn't really win him any points in the community, but at least Lydia has a goddamn chance to integrate into the group now. Hopefully. "You do much farming before all this happened?"

Barry laughs easily and continues to work. "I don't know about that but I at least tried."

He shifts to push his weight against another broken frame, dragging it out of the way.

"I mean, aside from my other job," because he's relatively sure that Negan recognized him in his suit, "I was a CSI. Not exactly much call for that these days but I know basic medicine."

He glances towards the clinic with a frown. "I just wish they'd trust me enough to help."

"You know... if you told'em who you were, maybe..." Maybe they'd change their opinions. Maybe they'd trust him a little more.

"I mean, I get why you wouldn't, man, I do." But it might work to Barry's advantage in this case.

"Either way, you just stick in there. They'll come around for you. I know these people... they can't stand me, but they're good people deep down. Been burnt a few times before, that's all."

"Maybe." His smile turns into something a little more strained as he shakes his head, "But it's better if I don't. The Flash can't save everyone this time. I can't give them hope only to take it away." Sure Barry still has his speed, but with food always in short supply he can't rely on it without risking his life.

"Even if I could go back in time, there's no guarantee that I could make things better."

He works in quiet for a few moments before looking up at Negan again, "You are too, you know? A good person." Barry quirks a smile at him, "Better than you give yourself credit for." The world might belong to the dead outside the walls of Alexandria, but Barry still hasn't given up on the idea of redemption.
