[ AU where Wei Wuxian makes it to Jin Ling’s one month celebration! So past Qiongqi Path. ]

They all felt that something was wrong about this entire thing. It wasn’t that Wei Wuxian felt distrustful of Jin Zixuan, and definitely not Jiang Yanli, but all things considered it didn’t feel right that he got invited to Jin Rulan’s one month celebration. They shouldn’t want him there, or there should have been stipulations for allowing him to attend. As it stood—it was just an invite. A normal small invite. Wen Qing told him not to go, Wen Ning told him to take him along, Wen Yuan… asked to go. He wanted to see the baby, he wanted to give him his gift.

It was a lot of pressure, especially when he wasn’t feeling well (not that he ever felt well lately). But in the face of a small begging Yuan—it crumbled a bit. He didn’t want to take Wen Ning, it wasn’t safe for the Fierce Corpse, and Wen Qing had no interest in going at all, so he agreed to bring Yuan. At the very least if they saw him show up with a toddler, a Wen one at that, they might realize that whatever they were expecting to find in the Burial Mounds, they wouldn’t.

Wen Qing said it was stupid, she might be right. But Yuan was so excited and he made Jin Rulan a card, held together with Wei Wuxian’s spare ribbon and painted with ink they made. It was cute, he wanted Jiang Yanli to see it, but he really wanted her to meet Yuan.

He had to carry Yuan part of the way, and walk the other. It was quite unsettling when they made their way across Qiongqi Path, the toddler chatting his ear off and holding Jin Rulan’s gift close to his chest. Everything being so quiet and uneventful scared him a bit, and he was quite grateful when they made it across it and even more when they crossed into Lanling.

At this point he swung Yuan up into his arms, holding the boy to his chest and digging through his pockets for the invite. “A-Yuan, can you hold this for me? Make sure you keep a strong grip, we need it to get into the party.” Yuan nodded his head determined and clutched it in his small hands along with the card and the gift. Wei Wuxian smiled, adjusted the boy on his hips and made for the Peacocks Palace.

It seemed like everyone stepped away from him as he made his way up the steps, eyeing the child like he probably kidnapped him off of the streets. That hadn’t been a rumor he anticipated but was sure would spread before the night was over. Yuan tucked his head down into his shoulder, nervously watching the people as they made their way up. Stopping at the front doors he shifted the boy and had Yuan pass the invite over before letting him down. “You can walk from here.”

Already he heard people talking, the whispers that they thought were quite enough to be missed. No one was ever quiet enough for that. “Who let him in here?” “Who invited Wei Wuxian?” “Is that the Yiling Patriarch?” “Did he kidnap that kid?”

He ignored it all and took Yuan’s hand in his, leading the boy inside. He felt his hand tugged on and the whispers from Yuan. “Xian-ge, is Rich-gege gonna be here? Where’s the baby?”

“Mm. I don’t know if Lan Zhan is gonna be here. We’ll have to look around and see if we can find your Rich-gege. As for the baby I’m sure that Jin Ling is sleeping with his Mama. You’ll get to see him, A-Yuan. You’ll have to learn to say his name you know, and his mothers name. She’s my Sijie, her name is Jiang Yanli.”

“Ji-an-g Yan-li?” Slow, carefully repeated, and the slow blinks of a child.

“Mhm! Very good. And Rich-gege is Hanguang-Jun.” The Jin’s had perfect timing at that, Jin Guangshan walking his way into the room and dropping into the chair at the head. He’s followed by his little Peacocks, the newest one Jin Guangyao practically up his rear end with how close he was to him. Wei Wuxian barely spared them a glance before turning his entire attention to Yuan. “I’m going to teach you a few more words today, some of which Lan Zhan would say are inappropriate.

“Ina—what?”

A laugh, bright and far too loud, loud enough to draw the Jin’s attention. He can see the moment Jin Guangshan notices him, sitting up higher in the chair and blinking toward them. “Wei Wuxian. You came.”

“I did! I was invited!” He still had the paper, he refused to give it to the guard in case anyone wanted verification he was allowed in here. “This one greets Sect Leader Jin Guangshan.” Straightening up he offers the man a bow before dropping his hands down and behind his back.

“Of course, we are aware you were invited.” The ‘it was not our idea’ was plainly heard. He wonder who did get him invited then. “And the boy?”

“He’s mine! I birthed him with Hanguang-Jun!”

A needle could have dropped in the silence of the room and be heard. The look he was getting from Jin Guangshan was absolutely priceless. He tried to hold his laughter in for as long as he could but the longer the man stared the harder it was. Eventually he broke, dissolving into hysterics and grinning from ear to ear. Straightening back up he brushed tears from his eyes and grinned at the Jin. “This one is Wen Yuan. A-Yuan, can you introduce yourself to Sect Leader Jin? Like we practiced.”

Shaky legs, terrified hands gripping his robes. Yuan slowly steps beside him and lets go to fold his hands properly in front of himself and bow. “T-Thi-s one g-reets Se-Sect Lead-er Jin!”

“Perfect!” Bright smiles he sweeps the boy into his arms and spins him around. Yuan tucks his face into his neck and Wei Wuxian turns back to face Jin Guangshan. “Mm. A child Wen. His parents?”

“Dead. I’m raising him.”

Whispers grow at that, looks being shot his way. Wei Wuxian simply tucks Yuan more against him and ignores them. “I see. Since the topic is brought up already we did invite you here with a purpose, other than to see Jin Ling.” This didn’t surprise him at all, of course. “We wish to discuss with you before the night is over about the Yin Tiger Seal.”

“What about it?” He didn’t, of course, bring it with him. He wasn’t stupid. Chenqing was secured on his belt, the Tiger Seal in the cave. If they came for him—he tightens his grip on Yuan. He could fight with Chenqing, if need be, but he wouldn’t risk Yuan’s safety with the Tiger Seal around. He simply hoped they didn’t pick a fight with him.

“You wish to continue this discussion now?”

“I don’t see why not, you already brought it up. I will not of course be relinquishing it to you or any of the Sects.” The others were gathering now, he spotted Lan Qiren who thankfully hadn’t been in the room when he declared Yuan his Nephew’s son. That would have been bad. He didn’t expect the old man to be here. He didn’t see Lan Wangji though and neither did Yuan, he would have shouted for him. “The Yin Tiger Seal is safe where it is, and will not be used unless necessary.”

“And that’s the problem, isn’t it? What you decide is necessary. Are you aware, Wei Wuxian, that we consider you a threat?”

Of course he fucking was.

Was this man trying to make him mad?

“A-Yuan is one of the residences of the Burial Mounds. Just what are you expecting to find up there? Because I can assure you that you won’t find it.” He slides Yuan to the floor and tucks him behind his back, hands gripping the small boys shoulders to keep him in place. It wasn’t hard, he clearly sensed the increasing stress of the situation and was already clinging to his robes. “Your Sect is the one that kidnapped and abused the Wen Remnants, why don’t you tell them just what exactly is waiting for them in the Burial Mounds?”

“Wei Wuxian!” His eyes closed, a slow breath taken in to calm himself. His gaze opened and he turned his head blinking in the direction of whomever shouted his name. Another Peacock, this man not one he recognized. He stormed up to him, chest heaving and hand gripping his sword.

“I’m sorry, do I know you?”

“You—!” Red faced, cubby looking, no he definitely didn’t know him. “How dare you curse me and pretend you don’t know me!”

What? This was definitely getting out of hand. “Excuse me? I have no idea what you’re talking about—“

“This!” His robes were yanked open at the top half, flashing Wei Wuxian his horrifying skin and what was definitely the hundred hole curse. Ah, a nasty curse, easy too. Definitely not his doing however. “You cursed me and I demand you undo it!”

“Ah, I didn’t do that. If I was going to curse you believe me, you’d know it.” That wouldn’t be something he’d keep quiet about. In fact he’d probably tell the person that he was going to do it before actually doing it. And a curse like that? Too low standard for him, and messy. It reflected itself back on the caster, didn’t it?

“You expect me to believe that!?”

Well no, everyone would probably believe this buffoon before him. Which was absolutely not fair because there was a very easy way to prove he didn’t cast this. Curses required someone to have spiritual energy too, which without his Golden Core he couldn’t do. “If you would just—“

They grabbed Yuan. His eyes widened as he watched the idiot yank the boy over toward him, the sword slipping from its sheath and placed far too close to the kid's body. “Another Wen isn’t it!? I recognize him! The boy with the woman!” Body tense, fear running through him like hot water.

“Xian-ge!”

“Hey! He’s just a kid, let him go! A-Yuan!” Chaos broke out at that, Chenqing already in his hand and several other cultivators joining the fray. He spun the dizi up to his lips, playing a quick note to swipe them away with resentful energy. He snatched Yuan up the second the Jin was far enough away, pulling him into his chest and predating his small body. Someone’s foot drove into his wrist, cracking the broke and knocking Chenqing from his hand.

The flute rolled away, somewhere out of his reach and the damn Jin that had grabbed Yuan was already back to his feet. Sword in hand, leveled toward him. Terror, this was terror. Yuan hadn’t done anything wrong, he was just a child, a small child that was born to loving parents, Doctors from when Wen Qing said. Was it so easy to blame someone because of their blood? Shielding his head with his hand he watched the Jin raise the sword.

He wished he still had his golden core, that he could call Suibian. He wouldn’t regret giving it to Jiang Wanyin, but he regretted he couldn’t defend himself and a child. As his body shook, longing for that feeling of power, warmth instead of cold—he felt something. A burning sensation on his gut, a far to familiar one.

The sword came down and he raised his hand to protect them anyway that he could.

Steel hit steel, a clash of blades, and a very familiar weight in his hands. The room collectively gasped and Wei Wuxian took a chance to peek his eyes open. There, in his palm, was a sword far too familiar look and very white. Suiban was not white. “Bichen?” Cultivators couldn’t use the swords of other cultivators, couldn’t draw another cultivator's sword. Bichen especially considering the power it took to wield such a sword.

“Hanguang-Jun?!”
“Is that Bichen?”
“Lan Wangji?”
“Where is Lan Wangji?”
