A severe blizzard and a lack of spare Winter housing had forced the Bug to take up residence in Coda's apartment. Bugsy was usually out during most of the day and came home late, but he'd made it back before Coda had gone to sleep tonight, and was puttering around the kitchen organizing some leftovers, singing softly to himself. He seemed a jovial fellow, he'd probably sing to them, if they asked.

[ Look: once bitten by a terrible person with time-destroying powers and bad intentions, twice shy. When Abbacchio hears from Polnareff who heard from Fugo that a street-level thug who'd been shaken up recently said that they said they'd heard about a new person fucking with the time stream? Abbacchio hadn't had the luxury of brushing off that kind of claim.

It took five days of searching to find it, and about twenty-four hours for the whole story to come crashing on everyone's heads.

Human traffickers, dealing in superpowered kids with stands or 'Peculiarities' or whatever the hell everyone was deciding to call it from back then or in the future or wherever these new people were actually from. Abbacchio knows bad fucking news when he sees it — he's been intentionally seeking it out for the past half decade or so — but this is on another level, and he recently helped a teenager overtake an entire gang.

It's the youngest kid that does it. He's small and short and a dirty straw blond and he looks, realistically, nothing like the kid Abbacchio's just recently lost from their team, looks nothing like Narancia's loud mouth and dark hair but—

But Abbacchio's seen enough fucked up things for a series of lifetimes and he's not even thirty yet, so he does what any other moron would do and he steals the kid from the traffickers.

Well. They steal almost all the kids — all the ones they can get their hands on before everyone scatters anyway, which isn't a ton. But the rest have timelines to return to, portals with families on the other side, just better timing of when they're found. This kid is wrestled from them after the portals seem to have closed up and after everyone involved is either dead or in prison and—

And now Abbacchio needs to contend with the fact that his apartment definitely only has one bedroom and he's had maybe two visitors ever since he started living on his own, and now he's got a teenager literally living with him.

Abbacchio gives him space — maybe too much space, but how the hell else do you deal with someone who spits bees? Abbacchio's got no idea if he's allergic and he'd rather not find out just because this kid's miniature family of buzzing assholes (they're judging him, Abbacchio can tell) have no concept of personal space.

They circle each other like wary cats and Abbacchio feels his warring nerves and worry and embarrassment at having his space intervened on (despite being the one who invited Hugh in in the first place) and Abbacchio's English isn't even that good and—

And maybe he hasn't been on his friendliest behavior, a phenomenon that already didn't really exist. It's been a week and no one has settled at all except for how Abbacchio now has a vague knowledge of which breakfast foods Hugh seems to like most, of the foreign Italian fare he's been able to offer him.

It's late at night which means Abbacchio is sleepless, restless and running through every mistake of the day, week, month, past years—

And interrupted by a sudden awareness that there's been noise, unsteady and not the neighbors as he'd at first assumed. Abbacchio goes still — he was already quiet — and then gradually he uncurls from laying on his side. He shoves the blanket away from himself and is halfway through swinging his legs over the edge of the couch when he pauses.

Fuck it, he probably doesn't want an audience if he's just having a rough night, right? The kinder thing to do is probably to do exactly what Abbacchio would want done for him if he was crying in the middle of the night — for everyone to pretend they can't hear him.

(That's not even true, anyway, even if he can't quite admit to himself that he's sick of being alone.)

Then there's a louder, sharper noise of distress. ] ...Fuck. [ Abbacchio drags himself up, shoves his hair out of his face, and begins to half-feel his way out of his living room and down the dark hall.

This is a bad idea, he thinks to himself outside his-bedroom-but-now-Hugh's door, and then he presses the door open. ]
