From that innocent decision or sense of self-preservation, a new feelings sparks. Something like affection. Something, you realize in the wake of speeding heartbeats, like love. POSSIBLE REASONS FOR MARRIAGE: ① Station → You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you. ② Feud → You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families. ③ Economics → Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down. ④ Empire → You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable. ⑤ Tribute → You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war. ⑥ Bloodline → Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection. ⑦ Disapproval → Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be. POSSIBLE SCENARIOS: ① First meeting → This is the very first time you're meeting your future spouse. ② Courtship → To get to know each other and encourage affection, your family has approved of you going on dates. ③ Engagement party → Be it a huge, formal affair or a small, intimate get together, you're celebrating (or pretending). ④ Wedding day → The big day! ⑤ Reception → The big party! ⑥ Wedding night → Every meme needs a smut prompt, right? ⑦ Honeymoon → Where will you go with your new spouse and what will you do there?

[If you'd told Raya just a few months ago that she'd be marrying Namaari, she'd be absolutely disgusted. And kind of offended. But now? Now it's, uh.... well. It's just kind of awkward now.

Apparently, the leaders of the tribes thought that the marriage of the heirs of Fang and Heart, a union symbolizing forgiveness and redemption between the two lands at the center of the most recent (and hopefully last) great conflict of their people, was the perfect first step towards a unified Kumandra. It was proof of the idea of peace being more than just talk; the unification couldn't happen overnight, as much as her Ba wished it could, so the union was supposed to show the others that Fang and Heart were willing to commit fully to becoming Kumandra again. In time, the other tribes would hopefully follow.

Which. Okay, cool. It's... fine. Totally fine. Nothing weird about this at all. Raya just wished someone would have told her about it before the public announcement. And, you know, given her more time to prepare between that and the first arranged outing between herself and her new wife-to-be. It wasn't even anything that bad; just a formal dinner between them, their parents, and a few other important people of note. But it just felt like.... so much so fast that Raya can't help but feel like she's been run over by Tuk Tuk rolling at full speed.]

It was Jiang Yanli’s idea.

That was how the entire thing started, and when Jiang Yanli had an idea and spoke—both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Wanyin, listened. She brought soup to the Burial Mounds, showed Wei Wuxian her wedding dress, and then sat down to give them all her idea. She wanted, as a wedding gift, to save Wei Wuxian from the fate that he had brought upon himself and the Wen’s.

With the entire cultivation world against him, with little options left, she decided that the only way for Wei Wuxian to save himself was to get married. Wei Wuxian had laughed at her, as horrible as it was, until there were tears in his eyes and he was coughing. Jiang Wanyin smacked him on the arm and he choked out between his tears; “who would marry the Yiling Patriarch?”

He should have guessed what her option was, and even as they left he still hadn’t. She’d just smiled and said that she had someone in mind, that he didn’t need to worry himself over it. Oh, he should have been terrified at those words and at the promise that she had made.

The next letter to the Burial Mounds came from Lan Xichen himself. The Gusu Lan symbol glared up at him mockingly and he peeled the letter open to read the words on it. Gusu Lan would accept the marriage of Wei Wuxian of Jiang Yunmeng under the condition that he gave himself and the Yin Tiger Seal over for cleansing of Resentful Energy.

The Lan’s would take the Wen refugees, find them work and keep an eye on them (not like the Jin’s and he did trust them more), Wei Wuxian was to stay in the Cloud Recesses. He assumed before he got too far in the letter that such a thing meant Lan Wangji was going to be his guard. He continued to read and nearly felt his heart collapse in his chest as he read the bottom.

The person who agreed to marry him in exchange for this was Lan Wangji.
