[ papers are strewn about the massive oak desk at which erwin sits, scribbling out budget numbers and other mundane information that needs to be forwarded to his superiors. the scratch of the ink pen is the only sound in the deafening silence, interspersed with the sound of pages being turned and the occasional exhale. this work is downright exhausting at times but erwin endures it out of necessity.

more than a small comfort is levi's presence next to him, perched on the edge of the desk and rifling through some of the pages out of curiosity. erwin never minds when he does this. he's always so careful to leave things exactly as he finds them despite the disarray that erwin drowns in. tidying can come when he's finished.

with his elbow on the desk he leans his forehead into his hand and pauses for some mental calculations. it takes longer than erwin knows it should and he takes a moment to take note of his declining mental clarity. he's nearly finished but a break is in order if he's not to make too many mistakes in his reports. it's better to pace yourself than hastily finish the task, but erwin struggles with such things. it's difficult for him to leave anything unfinished even if he's going to come back to it at a later point.

his thoughts wander from his work and his gaze slides over to the window, observing the colors of the evening's sunset. erwin leans back in his chair and it squeaks in protest. he lets out a hefty sigh and places the pen in it's proper cradle next to the ink jar.

erwin turns to levi and they make eye contact. his large blue eyes intensely gaze over levi's face and he makes note of how the sunset accentuates his harsh features but soften others. it's not uncommon for them to have moments alone together - they're rarely apart these days - but what is unusual is taking the time to actually appreciate the companionship.

erwin's eyes briefly slide to the door at levi's back. it's a nervous habit but he knows levi locks it every time without fail. ]

Will you indulge me?

[ he reaches out for levi, placing his large palm against his subordinate's thigh. it's not the most subtle or tactful initiation. there's a bluntness in their relationship that they can both appreciate, forgoing the necessity to dance around the subject and tiptoe around formalities. ]

perhaps that is what's led to this little moment between them, in the closed school grounds they both know so well - satoko's back against the wall, her head tilted back so the taller girl can reach her lips. rena's fingers fiddle at her belt, pulling the latch free and satoko snags her wrist on instinct alone. ]

Rena-san. [ her voice is remarkably stable for someone who's learned more about kissing in the past five minutes than her entire life prior. she enunciates as clearly as ever, the slight lisp still held over from their early days together. ] Perhaps you aren't thinking clearly. I must ask... are you quite certain about this?

[ there's a wariness to her voice, some part of her still preparing for rena to change her mind - but despite her hesitation, she certainly doesn't sound like she wants to stop just yet. ]
