broken smile, tired eyes / I can feel your longing heart - different world by alan walker; post-s3
He'd been assigned to them by the government; the specifics were never fully given, nor were they needed. They all knew this wasn't an ordinary situation. And, while having a not-so-secret agent hovering around all the time isn't exactly a perfect solution, it's the best compromise they can make right now.
Stone is chosen for the job because he's young, and gentle, and he doesn't look so intimidating when he smiles. He helps them move in, dressed down in jeans and a button-down that's been rolled up to his elbows, looking more like an employee of some hardware store than a soldier with decades of military training. But his eyes catch everything, and his mind constantly calculates the distance between them and each exit in the Byers' new home.
The sun is setting by the time they finish unloading the boxes and furniture, and the kids have gone off somewhere, no doubt exploring the edges of their new world. Stone can tell how hard it is for Joyce to let them out of her sight; in fact, he can tell a lot more, given the bags under her eyes and the way her smile doesn't look quite right. He makes coffee for them on the little machine he'd brought (a housewarming gift, such as it is) and leans against the counter, watching her. ]
How are you doing? [ he asks, his tone soft. He knows this isn't easy, and he's not looking for an easy answer. More than anything, he wants her to know that he genuinely does care for her - and her family. ]
thisisfine.jpg
Except for the few things that did, and that they now (the children now) had to carry for the rest of their lives.
It's an incredible relief, really, to have another adult keeping this process moving forward. It's always easier, after all, to fit into a groove someone else has already been sanding down; to move boxes once the first one has been pulled out of the trailer, to unpack once the first tape has been broken, to wrangle a pizza order out of disperate children once someone has suggested it's probably time to eat.
(It's supposed to be her job, Joyce knows. She's supposed to be the one pushing all of them forward, keeping all of the pieces together, building a new home where the world doesn't seem so terribly intent on ripping this little family into shreds. That had been her job since before all this, after all, and she should be good at it by now, not just clinging to the fact that someone else is there to remind her that it needs to be done.
It's just that she can't rip off packing tape without hearing the monster screaming. She can't turn a corner without expecting to see Alexei's lifeless features or Bob's pained expression. She can't turn a key in a door without her mind dragging her back into that last moment of just knowing, knowing--)
Her attention now, at least, is only distracted by the strain of listening for the soft, distant sounds of three sets of feet pattering here and there in the new digs. She's straining slightly, now that they're exploring the yard, but she can still catch the edges of voices (there's Jonathan, there's Jane, there's Jonathan again, there's Will--) until the much closer voice breaks her concentration.]
What? [A blink, and she settles back into the room, fingers shifting fretfully over the table she's seated at, almost uncertain that she's actually here.] Oh, I'm-- peachy. [Harder not to sound tired when the kids aren't there to be buoyed up for, apparently.] You're okay?
πβ₯
Besides, Stone feels better when he's taking care of people. He didn't get a chance to do that very often as a kid; growing up an orphan in a foreign country made it difficult. So he's making up for that now, lending a hand wherever he can.
He also sees something familiar in the eyes of Byers, something he's all too familiar with: loss. Grief. That hole inside where a person used to be. His own losses may have happened decades ago, but he hasn't forgotten that feeling, that all-consuming void that never completely goes away.
So - he makes coffee. He provides conversation. And, most of all, he watches. ]
Forgive me for saying so, [ he starts, arching an eyebrow slightly - though not in a judgmental way; he's smiling softly, like he's in on the joke, ] but I really don't believe you, Ms. Byers.
[ They're not quite on a first-name basis just yet. Taking a sip of his coffee, he glances out the kitchen window, eyes tracking the movements of the kids in the distance. Three silhouettes, one taller than the others, close together. Safe.
Looking back at Joyce, he smiles a little wider and shakes his head. ] You don't need to worry about me being okay, you know. I'm tougher than I look. [ He lifts an arm to show off one bicep, eyes crinkling up at the corners with mirth. ]

The best thing to latch onto, at the moment, is the reassurance of another set of eyes keeping tabs on the most important little gaggle in the world.]
Fair enough. [Twisting her fingers around a mug isn't remotely as satisfying as a cigarette, but it's something.] But-- you know.
[She thinks he does, anyway. It's always hard to say. There hadn't exactly been clear lines of communication running out of Hawkins over the last few years. In an even more human way, it's not entirely easy to believe that anyone who had been fully briefed on the things they'd seen (the things that might still be out there, might now be hunting them, no matter how far they moved) would be willing to sign up for the unknown next part of the ride.
But it's not really the details that matter, just now. What Joyce suspects this particular agent knows--from the easy stance, from the genuinely friendly smiles, from the gentle approach here and now--is the difficulty of rebuilding.]
Still a house rule. You're here; you're getting worried about. Nothing you can do about it.
no subject
He respects her for a lot of things, actually: for the gentle, yet firm tone she has when talking to the kids; for the confident smile she puts on when they get worried; for the way she's welcomed him into her life, into her home, even though he's a complete stranger. Sometimes when he looks at her he can feel a strange ache inside his chest - an ache that reappears now, when she tells him he's going to get worried about whether he likes it or not.
He brushes the feeling aside and laughs lightheartedly, nodding in acquiescence. ]
Alright, alright. Just don't spend too much time worrying about me, at least. [ A playful look creeps into his expression, and he adds, ] Did I tell you that I know karate?
[ This is something of an understatement - he's actually a black belt. But, again, the details aren't what's important here. He wants to distract her from those worries, at least for a little while. ]
I can teach the kids, if you'd like.
