The one conceit of this meme: humans (or human-expies, whatever beings they may be) mate for life. With this comes the typical trappings of "mating for life" - indescribable closeness, contentment around your "destined," and, of course, in your all-too-familiar worst case, jealousy and rage should the bond be threatened.

Oh, and there's also the little caveat that, should your mate die, you die as well. But that's not too much to swallow, is it? The whole thing is only a small conceit, you know.

Honestly, Wei Wuxian had never intended seriously considered mating. It seemed as if it would really take away from experiencing life to the fullest and attempting all he wanted to do. He couldn't imagine, frankly, ever feeling the desire to tie himself to a person. To tie himself to anything.

That was why it was strange to feel this need now. The need to be at the centre of someone's life. In their heart. Everything.

In retrospect, he supposed it had been sudden. He had felt the draw from the beginning, but he hadn't realised at the time what that meant. Wanting to be near Wangji. Wanting his attention, negative or positive, whatever it was, as long as his focus was absolute.

But now, after he had thought about it, in his head and lout loud, after he had time to really think it through, he finally decided that he had to go for it. "Ey! Ey, Lan Zhan!"

He called out his name, before he caught up to him, then he just fell into step next to him, a bright grin on his face. "Were you missing me? I sensed that."

As soon as Wei Wuxian had crossed his path, he'd known there was something different, even if he didn't want to acknowledge it, didn't want to admit the way he found himself looking for the other teenager. He was a troublemaker, uncontrolled and dangerous and yet..

And yet, he couldn't fault his principles, even if he didn't follow rules. He doesn't turn when he hears the familiar voice, doesn't look when Wei Wuxian falls into step beside him.

"Wei Ying." It's not an answer, merely an acknowledgement of his presence as his pace altered to match the other cultivator's.
