It's a bit of Japanese folklore that true lovers are connected to each other via a red string that represents destiny. But what comes first, the love or the string? What if they came at the same time? This meme is one part love at first sight and one part soulmate meme. You'll find yourself connected to something by a red string tied around your pinkie that you just can't get off. Well, may as well see what- or who- is on the other end! When you do see who it is, no matter who it may be, you'll fill a sudden and intense rush of love for them - whatever love means to you. The Lan’s had a very interesting relationship when it came to their ‘fated one’. Since destiny, soulmates and true love was all a myth some believed it only pertained to Lan’s. After all, their luck in romance was said to—vary. When Lan’s loved apparently they loved with their entire being, enough that people labeled what they had as ‘soulmates’. Some called it luck, others who heard specific rumors called it ‘a damned fate’. What it meant to be in love with a Lan was very difficult to understand, to the point people just said “don’t do it”.

Some thought all the chaos stemmed from whatever was odd about their forehead ribbons. The only ones that wore them, weird marriage rituals involved with them, depending on who you asked the answer would be different. Some thought there was something magical about it, others thought the Lan’s were just strange people with strange customs.

Wei Wuxian didn’t listen to any of the rumors. Perhaps, at some point, he should have.

When they fell into the cave with Lan Yi, and nearly died to her cord assassination, he hadn’t thought twice about asking Lan Wangji for his ribbon. He wanted to live after all and if the Guqin thought he was a Lan, that was better than death. So the other bound them together, the ribbon wrapped around their wrists tightly and tying them together.

It wasn’t supposed to be literal.

She gave them her blessing, it was incredibly odd and Wei Wuxian kept looking from the woman to Lan Wangji wondering if he understood what she was talking about. But that was it, she talked to Lan Wangji, smiled at the both of them and departed from the place giving her blessing. And then they were kicked back out, surrounded by baby rabbits and laying on top of each other.

When he sits up and realizes he’s still connected to Lan Wangji it takes some stumbling and flailing to get the both of them standing. Lan Wangji takes the ribbon off, gets it back on his own forehead and that is when Wei Wuxian finds he can’t walk away from him. It’s baffling, because they shouldn’t be connected still, and yet when he looks down he finds this bright red string connected to the end of his finger. He frowns, lifts his hand up and gives a little experimental tug—that yanks Lan Wangji toward him.

It reminds him of a talisman he made once, one that connects two people together, keeps them at least five li near each other. This? This was not the same. When he tried to yank and break it he feels his heart stop, literally stop and hurt. He immediately stops tugging on the cord after that, lifting frightened eyes to the other across from him.

“Lan Zhan? Lan Zhan, did she curse us? Did your ancestors actually curse us I can’t—Lan’s are supposed to be good people! You have three thousand rules on how to be a respectable person and I am certain there is one against cursing people! Because that’s not nice!” Is he panicking? Probably.

Because Lan Qiren would break the no killing rule just to remove him from his honorable and respectable nephew.

[ For a vampire, being alone just came natural. It also made sense to why he never got a soulmate or anything like that since he hadn't even reached the tender age of 25 before being turned.

He'd never had much luck romantically anyway and after a couple hundred years had just given up on the idea of having anything like love. After all, the undead weren't supposed to feel things like that, but he was always a bit of an outcast as far as things like that were concerned. So when the odd little red string appeared around his pinkie, it was enough for Kayre to be intrigued and so he started to follow it when he could.

It took some time, but sometime after the sun set on this particular day, he finally found the person his red string was attached to. While it was likely different for the living? He still felt that pleasant warmth fill his entire chest and it had his smile widening just a bit without completely realizing it as he bolted forwards. She was beautiful, with fluffy, wavy blond hair and red eyes so similar to his own. ]

Uh... hey! Guess it's true what they say about everyone finding their other half, huh?
