AMBIGUOUS SIBLINGS

There's nothing wrong with loving your brother or sister; in fact, a deep bond between siblings is healthy and ideal. But when does closeness stop being a wonderful thing and start being...off?

Most people would say your and your brother or sister are just very, very close, perhaps a little co-dependent, yet that's understandable, perhaps, if the two of you have been through the wringer. Still, there a whispers that your relationship is more blurry than properly familial.

Is that just a misunderstanding, because you've only had each other for so long others wouldn't understand how you've lived, or is there some truth to their suspicion?

[The existence of the Precure has been public knowledge for a few weeks now, and things have been surprisingly normal. Apparently, the existence of magical girls is just something people are willing to accept. It hasn't even really made a difference for the girls themselves, since nobody really knows it's them (or at least, if anyone does, they haven't spoken up about it).

At least, nobody knew it was them until just a while ago, when Bunbee ambushed them and Karen couldn't think of an excuse to split up. So she'd transformed right in front of Sanae. That immediate crisis was now over, but... well, now she was standing in the living room, ready to have what she expected to be an awkward conversation.]

...so. You probably have some questions.

[ Honestly, the part of her that freaked out with fascination that HER little sister was a freakin' Precure, of all people, had passed over the course of the battle she witnessed. Because as cool and amazing as it had all been, the awareness that it was her sister out there fighting, risking herself, all of that... really started to eclipse it. And it showed in Sanae's face, always earnest and naked with her emotions.

Her tone was scolding but it was also just... scared... ]

You've been out there this whole time! Getting hurt, beat up, when I'm the one that's supposed to be protecting you?!

[ That... was really the full of it. The promise Sanae had made their parents, that she'd take care of Karen, that she'd cherish and protect her sister always... How was she supposed to keep that promise now? ]

[This wasn't... well, okay, actually, Karen kind of had expected something like this, but she'd been hoping maybe Sanae wouldn't think about that aspect.]

I know! --I. That's why I didn't tell you, because I didn't want you to worry.

[It's the same basic reason none of the others have told their families, either, but worrying about other people worrying is Karen's specialty.]

[ Sanae crossed an arm underneath her chest, taking in a deep breath. That made sense, but it really... didn't make her feel any better about the situation. She felt anxious, lost...

... left behind. ]

I wish you had trusted me with it... even if I would have worried...

[ She had a poster of her own sister's Cure form on her damn wall, and she had no idea they slept under the same roof. She was left ignorant, simply paying hero worship while her sister was risking her actual life... ]

[It had been a monumental effort on Karen's part not to comment on that poster, ever. Anything she could possibly say about it had seemed like it would give her away immediately, sound bizarre, or both.

At the moment, though, that was the farthest thing from her mind.]

...maybe I should have. I thought as long as I could protect you, you didn't need to know, but...

[ Sanae sighed again, closing the distance between them to draw Karen into a tight hug, keeping her pressed against her chest, a hand reaching to gently pet at her hair. ]

I can't ask you to stop... you have a duty, now... And we can't undo the past mistakes either...

[ And despite how lost she felt, she didn't want Karen to be burdened by guilt, either... ]

To think you're even the one I had a crush on...

[Karen's never resisted Sanae's hugs, but she's been more enthusiastic about them lately. This is no exception as she hugs back, humming contentedly.]

It's not just a duty. I want to do it--help people, keep them safe. I wanted to protect you, especially, after you've always protected me.

[This is actually an important distinction! It was a whole thing.

Then she pulls her head back just a little and looks up.]

So you really did have a crush on me.

[Karen felt like that should bother her more, but... well, obviously she knew she was Sanae's favorite, thus the poster. It had actually been kind of nice knowing her sister would like her even not knowing it was her. And going from there to "crush" wasn't a big mental leap.

Honestly, she'd probably have had a crush on Sanae if they weren't sisters.]

[ Hoo lordy she really had said that out loud, hadn't she. Sanae's face immediately burned up, a deep red as she pulled away from the hug to wave her hands dismissively. ]

I-it's nothing, though, really! Just usual hero fandom stuff!

[ She definitely hadn't looked up erotic doujins of Cure Aqua, ha ha! That'd be weird! At least... it would be now that she knew Cure Aqua was her sister... ]

[Karen was willing to take Sanae at her word, but the insistence on it being nothing made her mind go directly to "but what if it wasn't?" anyway. (Not that the non-erotic side of hero fandom was much better anyway.) She'd been ready for a crush, but the implications of a crush, not so much, and she quickly turned away to only look at Sanae through the corner of her eye, a movement she hoped would conceal her own blush (it didn't, really).]

It's just a little celebrity crush! People get those all the time, right?

And... it's okay! Even if said celebrity is my little sister...

[ They were both blushing messes, but Sanae felt like things were so much worse on her end. She hadn't just simply "crushed' on Cure Aqua. She'd had all sorts of things. Of being able to date her, to kiss her, to touch her... a girl that revealed herself to be her own kin. She'd seen porn of her. Fictional, drawn depictions, sure, but she'd seen it! She'd touched herself to it, she'd...

The shame just started hammering her down until she couldn't really bear it, trying to quickly walk past Karen. God, had Karen known? She'd cleaned Sanae's room for her before. It was bad enough to come across a sibling's fap stash in normal circumstances. The fact that it was of her sister's super hero persona... ]

(The younger sister with codependency issues.)
