PROMPTS
- childhood: You've known each other forever. Puberty has changed a couple of things, though.
- friends to more: Best buds, right? Can you let a little crush get between you?
- always there for you: You've seen the person you've liked for forever get hurt time and time again, always offering a shoulder to cry on. You should make your own move, unless you're content in the background forever.
- bad boy/good girl: Or bad girl/good boy, or bad boy/good boy...there's a certain appeal.
- the innocent: They're the delicate little pure flower of the school. Do you genuinely want to date them or is this a mission for corruption.
- smitten puppy: You know the type. Always following the object of their adoration around. Don't you want to sweep them off their feet and show them there's other fish in the sea?
- the ice queen/king: You have to defrost them.
- 10 things: You were challenged to ask them out or bed them, but shit got real.
- never noticed anyone before: You'll never be into all this love and sex stuff. Your classmates are crazy - wait, who's that? Your face is flushing. Why?
- never noticed: This person's always been there for you. You feel silly that you've never noticed.
- the unattainable: Is the school's hottest cheerleader or football player really all that high above you?
- follow you until you love me: It's not stalking! You just happen to be in the same place as them...all the time.
- hate at first sight: You hate their guts but you can't stay away.
- sudden hottie: Were they always so bangin', or did taking off their glasses or pulling down their ponytail do that much?
- too shy, too blind: you're too shy to tell them how you feel. you also don't see that they clearly feel the same.
- kindness counts: They were kind to you, which is a pretty big deal in high school especially if you're an outcast, and you can't help nursing an even bigger crush.
- sudden attraction: You're the kind who falls instantly and hard.
- always on the move: You change crushes or dates like underwear. Maybe this one is the one, though.
- nerd love: Both of you are social pariahs. At least you have each other.
- into older people: He or she is the kind of teen who's so mature and always dating college students or even real adults. But you can change their mind about their peers, right?
- differences in social classes: One of you is popular, the other so not. Can you make it work, or will the popular part be ashamed?
- opposites attract: Sometimes, the weirdos get the hottest babes.
- awkward confessions: You want to get your feelings out into the open - curse your voice cracking.
- asking you out: You'll totally borrow your dad's car to take them to the movies. Or here, here's your letterman jacket. Go steady?
- parents don't understand: Your parents want to keep you apart or are too tragically uncool.
- dates: If you have to go dutch at McDonald's, it's sad. Maybe stay-at-home dates are better.
- prom: Limos, tuxes, wasted money, oh my!
- slow dance: The DJ popped in that best of the 90s love songs megamix CD. Now's your chance.
- sadie hawkins: The Sadie Hawkins Dance. Get your khaki pants. Oh oh oh. Girls ask the guys. It's always a surprise.
- sneaking out: The most romantic times are past curfew.
- detention: As the Breakfast Club taught us, it's possible to find love in a hopeless place.
- experimentation: It doesn't count if it's above the belt, right? And finger definitely don't count.
- over the top: You're that couple that is always on the PDA or being schloopy and goopy romantic. Don't be that couple.
- first kiss: Pucker up.
- first time: Is it romantic and slow or in the back of someone's car?
- drunk: Drunk confessions and attempts to make passes are ill-advised.
- fight: High school couple fights can be deadly. Avoid at all costs
- the volatile couple: Speaking of, there's always a couple that seems to be fighting 24/7? When they're hot, they're hot, when they're cold, they're glacial.
- finally together: You're the will-they-won't-they of high school, and when you get together senior year, the whole class will give you a standing ovation because FINALLY.
- long term couple: When did you guys get together? Probably like middle school or something. You've always been together.
- hide who you are: Unfortunately, even these days some people make it necessary for those who don't conform to the "ideals" to hide their true selves.
- break up: Statistically, it was bound to fail.
- after graduation: Can you guys make it work after you lose the common ground of school? This can be challenging if you're going to be living in different places.

Maybe it wasn't her dream high school relationship of being the quarterback's girlfriend, but it was desirable in other ways. The ridiculously talented, devilishly handsome, and questionable bad boy, falling for the demure and innocent, but often misunderstood and tragically unpopular high schooler. Maybe she couldn't walk down the halls on his arm, but she daydreamed about him all day, like she was having some tawdry affair and it felt so wrong and good all at once.
No wonder everyone knew. Their eyerolls and dislike only fueled her fire and despite the guilt she felt, only reinforced the idea that Jesse St. James was the only one in the world who could ever truly understand her.
The week had gone like that. Texting him as often as she could, talking on the phone in the evening, until Saturday night arrived and they could finally be together. He'd procured tickets to one of the traveling Off-Broadway shows that was being played in the city, A Chorus Line, and she'd been so excited she'd barely been able to sit still all week. It was an appropriate show considering their recent duet in her bedroom and probably why he'd picked it.
She'd spent hours preening, until her make up was perfect and every curl fell exactly how she wanted it to. She'd chosen a dress that was within her normal range of cute with just a hint of sexy, reminiscent of vintage school days with long white stockings and strappy heels. The hours had been worth it when she'd caught the way he swallowed upon seeing her.
Dinner had been fun, and she appreciated that he brought her to a restaurant that was even nicer than Breadsticks, because the city had more options. But it was the theater that really capture her. She was giddier than a child in a candy store. It had been awhile since she'd been out to the theater, but the way she took his hand and squeezed, eyes wide with childlike delight, someone might have thought it her first time.
"I can't believe we are here!" She rubs the arm of the hand she was holding, still feeling like she was in a dream, and leans into him, while they wait in line to pick up their tickets. "This is amazing. Feels like coming home."

And God, did she look good in a short skirt.
He had spent probably just as long on his own appearance, making sure to pick the exact right outfit that was both edgy enough to still fit his confidently oppositional persona but also nice enough to actually be suitable for both a date and a trip to the theatre. It had resulted in a pair of nice jeans, his usual designer boots, a graphic t-shirt displaying the logo for the classic Eagles album One of These Nights and a nice black jacket to tie it all together. His hair was absolutely perfectly styled and he was sure to add the precise amount of cologne to make him smell alluring without overwhelming anyone's senses should they be sitting around him. Honestly, he didn't know how anyone could resist him. It probably hadn't been fair of Shelby to ask him of all people to help her reconnect with her daughter when it was inevitable that she'd fall for him harder than he was falling for her.
Because he wasn't falling for her.
At all.
Really.
He only feels like his throat runs a little dry when leaned into him because he finds her attractive, only feels like his heart flutter because he's so in character. There's a lot of rationalizations that he can come up with, but at the end of the day, the grin he gives is authentic, and the excitement he feels is absolutely real. He goes to place a kiss against the top of her head, pulling his hand out of hers so he can put his arm around her shoulders instead.
"When I saw they were playing here, I couldn't resist. I'm just glad they still had tickets available that weren't absolute garbage." He'd paid a pretty penny, of course, but money didn't mean much when he was using his parents credit card. He gives his last name when they get to the counter, taking the envelope with a muttered thanks, and starts to guide her towards the entrance to the theatre house. "A perfect date night."

Meeting Jesse had certainly been enough to take her breath away, not only because he was absolutely gorgeous, but because he was so talented that she still had a hard time believing he would give her the time of day. After their joyful rendition of 'Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen', it had been obvious that they were well matched vocally and that gave her some courage around him. In many ways though, she still felt like a young girl with stars in her eyes, wondering if he would pull the rug out from under her. She'd made the decision to put those fears aside and the more time they spent together, the safer she felt.
Her heart flutters when he switches the position of how he holds her and presses a kiss to her head. Everything about the night was making her feel like she'd won some kind of lottery and she was being swept into the life that she belonged in.
It feels good to be back in a theater again, a real professional theater, and the company makes it even better. "Best date I've ever been taken on." She thanks the man who takes their tickets when he hands her the playbill and points towards their seats. Then she lets Jesse lead them down while she takes in the sights, trying to keep her focus on whether they are going.
As they settle, she lets out a sigh and leans towards him. "I love everything about the theatre. The lights, the muffled conversations you can't pick up on, and especially the orchestra warming up. When I'd come as a little girl, I'd fantasize about everything that was going on backstage, and just wish I could be a part of it all."

“That’s either a great amount of praise or a real insult to the people who have taken you out before,” he muses, his lips twitching with a small smirk. “I’ll take it as the former for the sake of my ego. Clearly those lucky enough to snag a date with you haven’t should have gone for something more cultured when trying to win your heart.” He settles himself into the seat beside her as he talks, leaning back slightly and stretching his arm out over the back of her chair, letting his fingers stroke her shoulder gently once he’s comfortable.
His smirk turns into a more genuine smile as he looks over at the stage, his own eyes lit up with the excitement that any aspiring actor got being in a theater. Someday, he’d be up on one just like it, and he has no doubt that she will be too. “Just a few more years until you graduate and then I bet you’ll steal the spotlight in no time.”

"Let's just say that finding boys who are willing to dress up and go to see an Off-Broadway musical, or even think about it as an option, are minimal at best." Maybe Finn would try, but it would have to be her idea, and she could picture the blank stare she'd initially get while he tried to figure out whether he even wanted to. He had so much potential, but was stuck so heavily in the expectations of being the quarterback. "Culture isn't exactly McKinley's strong suit." She really would have loved to be around more like minded individuals.
That was why being there with Jesse was such a treat; like a dream date. He exuded culture and she felt like a flower opening to the sun in his presence. He was right though, just a few more years and she'd be out of Ohio, ready to head to NYC and into the culture for which she truly belonged. "It can't go fast enough. I envy you, being so close to freedom. Though, honestly, I'm a bit surprised you chose L.A. You seem like you'd belong better in the big apple." Surely, if they were cut from the same cloth that was what he wanted to. "Or is Hollywood your ultimate goal?"

"It's a real shame you can't transfer to Carmel. You'd really be in your element there." He'd meant it when he said he was sure they'd get every duet together, too, and a part of him wished she really could transfer just because of that fact alone. "Well, I'm more than happy to take you to any play you want, any time. I try and make it to at least three performances a month. It's just as important to observe as it is to act if you want to get it just right."
The mention of his school of choice makes his jaw tense just slightly, but he catches himself quickly and gives her a small smile and a shrug of his shoulders. "I'd never lower myself to Hollywood acting, I want to get cast for my incredible vocals, not just because of my good looks." Though he wasn't foolish enough to think that looks didn't play a part on Broadway, he at least knew it wasn't quite as heavy as it would have been in LA. "It's the scholarship, honestly. A full ride was too good to pass up. I figure the big lights of the city that never sleeps will be waiting for me once I'm done."

"It would be amazing to have my talent appreciated. Sometimes I feel like I'm carrying our show choir. Even if we do have other talented members, they seem to think all they need is to open their mouths and sing, or get up on stage and dance and it takes so much more work than that. We have raw talent, after all, we literally had to pick new songs five minutes before we went on, but it showed." He'd seen it himself in the fact that he'd called her out for not having the same emotional depth as Barbra. If she'd been fully prepared she was sure he would have seen her for what she really was. She hoped he'd seen a little bit of that since.
She smiles at the way he talks about Hollywood. She feels exactly the same, and it's not the first time they've seen eye to eye on something. "That's what I always say. I want to be casted for my talent, not for the work I've had done." She'd looked up UCLA after he'd spoken about his scholarship. She'd even entertained the possibility of applying her senior year, if what was happening between them continued to grow.
"It's a good school, and you'd be dumb to pass up a free ride. Still, you'd better get to NYC as soon as possible. You belong there, I just know it."

He can see the lights flickering and knows the play is going to start soon, and he’s sure to cozy up against her all the more. He leans in so he can lower his voice some when he talks, to make sure that he won’t be caught talking when the announcements start.
“Nothing will keep me from New York, I can guarantee it.” He bites his lip, moving his head so that it’s practically next to her ear, able to feel her hair tickling gently against his nose. “And I damn well better see you there shortly after. We’d make a great team on stage.”

She settled back into her seat as the lights flash. Not much more time for conversation, but she was looking forward to the play starting. More than okay with him cozying up against her, she leans in. She can feel his breath against her hair as he talks about how they'd make a great team. Reaching over she weaves her fingers through his and squeezes. "Well maybe someday we'll be able to be out in the open about this. Who knows, if we make it Broadway, maybe one day we'll get to attend the Tony's together."
The lights dimmed and an announcer began to speak then. She leaned over to press a quick kiss to his lips as the time for silence began, and she didn't let go of his hand.
