Floriography or Hanakotoba is the art of basically assigning meaning to flowers and certain plants. If you have something to say to a certain person, you give them that certain flower or use multiple flowers for a bouquet filled with complex meaning.

Though some may not agree, I feel that you cannot go wrong with an arrangement of flowers. They are beautiful, transient, and speak a language that has survived for centuries. As such, one can always hope their meaning will be conveyed.

Very well said. I admit I'm not well versed in the language of flowers. As an art teacher, I'm familiar with the common meanings associated with certain flowers in works of art, but I'm certainly no expert.
