Epistolary

It's all text messages and Facebook entries these days, isn't it? Maybe you're from a time or a world where letters are still being written or maybe you're just saying fuck it to your computer and your phone and to the fast paced contact methods of modern day society. Write a letter to someone you rarely see or can't for whatever reason see right now, because of distance or maybe personal issues that are more easily addressed on paper anyway. Come on, you don't need an excuse, just write that damn letter!


How to play -

1. Top-level with your character. Include prefs and the like, if you wish.
2. Others now leave a comment with a letter their character has written yours.
3. Have your character respond, then go tag around as you wish.
4. Be entertained!

Leaving Paris has never been easier, there is nothing which tethers me here, to these streets and the houses in them.

I have been upfront with Papa, told him I have no interest in marriage, that in my heart I'm already spoken for, and he respects my wishes. It is with my whole inheritance I go. It will be paid me in monthly allowances while I'm away. Upon my return, the remains shall be transferred to my own possession.

Self-reliance is such an ambivalent affair.

Where will you go, you may ask, and I can only reply, I don't know. My first stop will be a village up north whose name I have only heard mentioned once, and you would not recognise it, even if I pointed it out to you on a map. When I have looked my fill in those parts, who can say, my dear friend, who can say? Alsace, perhaps. Germany? England?

The world is vast, when you meet it alone.

The world is indeed a vast and exciting place. I am glad you are finally getting to have a taste of it for yourself. In a way, I am envious of the adventures that await you.

I am gladdened to hear that your father was so willing to give you what you need to follow your heart. You know that mine still will not speak of me since I left Cambridge. But you remember how he was, even before mother passed. He wished his boys as soldiers, not scientists.

But you should not worry for me. London treats me well and I have been afforded so many amazing opportunities to persue my theories and practice my craft. Doctors are sorely needed and surgeons even more so.

Perhaps some day, you will visit me here. I miss your summer visits, while I was housebound with my ailments. Though you might set London on it's toes, now that you are a fashionable lady of Paris. I would love to see it.

But please visit that village and tell me all about it. I would enjoy the travel, even if just vicariously. But Miss Giroux, do not forget the words of the poet Donne. "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main." You meet the world at last, but you are not alone. I am with you in spirit.
