The Dragon's Bride

Flames, then ash. Your village will be left with little else should the dragon that plagues the countryside not get his demanded sacrifice...if you're lucky. Your good fortune turns south, the bones of your neighbors (or whatever else remains of them) litter a new charred graveyard that was once a town. So, the necessary offers must be made. At least that's the hope. The alternative would be too awful to contemplate. In a last-ditch effort to save those you love — or against your will, as these things tend to go with forcibly created martyrs — you have been hoisted onto the pyre, waiting for the dragon to fly off with you. What terrors race through your mind as your doom impends? How you'll end up in a beast's belly, no doubt. Except, you must consider this: there are worst fates than being a dragon's next meal. A monster that covets you as its treasure...a new type of danger unfurls its wings. You've become a dragon's bride. But could such an infernal creature ever learn to know honest, unselfish affection? Is it possible to be more than a "spouse?" A mere treasure? Perhaps, you could learn to be a dragon's love. HOW TO PLAY ✗ Comment with your character, roles ("dragon" or "bride") prefs, etc. ✗ Y'all know how this goes. Approach "dragon" as a stand-in. The monster mash could be elves, orcs, goblins, werewolves, demons, dwarves, fey, purple people eaters, what have you. Of course, actual dragon and shifters folks are welcome, too! And don't think that you have to make your boring human a boring ol' human. Consider this the monster/supernatural being/cryptid/creature AU of your dreams! ✗ Second verse, same as the first, "bride" registers as gender-neutral 'round these parts. That word choice just sounds a touch more poetic. ✗ Reply to others.

[The vampire in the mountain has demanded tribute in the form of a single young person once a year for as long as anyone can seem to remember. The stories say that she spends one lascivious night with them before draining them of all their blood, bathing in it, and then drinking every last drop, leaving their corpses to dry and wither like corn husks in the sun. In return, she’ll leave the villages be, and keep them safe from the evils outside the valley.

No one knows if the story is true, but every year a young person is sent up the winding path to the manor on the mountain, with its glittering windows that can be seen at sunset in every village in the valley, and that young person is never seen again.

And the villages stay safe, sequestered away from the wide world, and they prosper, in their own quiet way.

The six villages each take a turn in providing the tribute, and each village has their own way of choosing, their own story behind the process, their own ritual in sending off their chosen sacrifice.

The full moon shines brightly over the village of Sallneck, and after the harvest feast, the villagers line the road to the mountain with candles in their hands, singing softly, as Frankie’s mother weeps.

He’s not glad to go, but as he walks past the people he’s known his whole life, a crown of flowers on his head and a basket of harvest gifts in his hands, he rather thinks it’s for the best.

Because he doesn’t really fit in anymore. He hasn’t since that night in the forest three years ago. Something happened to him, and he was changed, and now... he can’t really call himself human anymore. He doesn’t belong here, in this peaceful valley, with people who are willing to sacrifice one of their own if it means they can turn a blind eye to the rest of the world, and the rest of the world will turn a blind eye to them. He can’t be a peaceful man. It’s been roiling in his chest for three years and he can’t keep it hidden anymore.

So now, well... somehow the vampire will end him. Either she’ll recognize he’s not human and destroy him, or he’ll suffer whatever fate all the others have suffered.

At least he won’t have to hide anymore.

The hike up the mountain road takes a few hours, but the cool night air doesn’t even touch Frankie’s skin the way it would have before. The moon is bright, but he knows he wouldn’t even need it to guide his path. He is a little hungry, but he’d stolen one of the sheep from another village the night before, so it’s a hunger he can easily ignore for now.

When he finally reaches the manor, it’s much more inviting looking than Frankie had imagined. He’s not even particularly scared when he lifts the heavy knocker. Whatever happens next... he’s ready.

He takes a breath, straightens his back, and knocks.]

He grunted when he hit the stony floor, and briefly fell unconscious alone in the cavernous chamber.

He dreamed of that morning, after council, where it was decided that there needed to be one- just one- and in exchange there would be no further deaths to their livestock, their crops, their cottages under the tyranny of the beast big enough to cover the land in shadow. He was bathed, dressed, and driven by sword point to the lip of the cavern, a drop too steep to climb again unless he somehow grew wings.

A "maiden", they said. Maidenhood had meant many things, and the village was certain this odd boy had never done any "deeds"...

He awoke with a start and a cough, his temporary sleep driving dust and dryness into his throat and lungs. This would be where it ended, didn't it...? Laughed at by a dragon for not even being the right sacrifice, then eaten. But at least the village would later suffer...

The Ileovoth, descendants of dragons themselves, have some sects that worship their more primal roots. Such is what comes to Luxaela's mind when he sees the village. Disguised as someone of that world, he takes his time to integrate himself within it. Desiring to meet the dragon, to see just where his lineage diverges from theirs, is of particular note. With any luck, he can be a temporary offering - provided he isn't meant to be food - and then eventually be on his way. He can't stay forever, after all. His men would miss him. For now, they're away with Luxaela's commander on other missions while their Admiral explores planetside.

At least it's easy enough to disguise his horns as some part of mask. This society wears the horns of other beasts, it seems, though not as a trending fashion statement. He doesn't get too many strange looks, at least, and he works carefully in order to avoid being thrown out.

It's a shame that there aren't many books, but what they village has is enough to learn the language by even faster than simple immersion. Luxaela reads them again and again, and then once more, to commit the words to memory. A translation earpiece is just not the same as learning the language from scratch.

Still, the life is peaceful. Even if the children often borrow him to be a "living tree" to help them reach their toys stuck to their roofs, their hands clinging to his horns for balance. A small group realizes that his horns are real, but they promise not to tell, and as far as Luxaela can see, that's held true.

It doesn't take him long to be conversational in the language, at least.

Eventually, the village is bustling with activity, and the children are excited. Tonight is the time to worship the dragons that still yet live, wherever they might be, for the next three days. Travelers also come to peddle their wares and enjoy the festivities.

The quite village is transformed into something loud and warm. And it's enough to coax a smile to Luxaela's face. It is not unlike home, he thinks.

As it is, he peruses the stalls the moment the evening hours arrive, and he once more feels acutely aware that he's taller than everyone here. He has to actively look down to make sure he doesn't bump into people, and duck further still beneath any overhanging decorations, lest they attempt to tangle on his horns.

Even in the dark, he's easily visible due to his facial markings lighting the way, casting a soft blue-white glow along his surroundings. At least his hair is bound and hidden under opaque, festive cloth, lest even that glimmer bring him more attention than he desires.

Narrow red eyes flick down towards someone he was a hair's breadth away from bumping into, and he murmurs an apology out of habit before moving to step around them.
