Superheroes were an annoyance. They suffered from the morality of modern humanity and ego-driven powers that could be used to back up such morals. Abraxas worked under older codes, the kind that demanded blood. He was the ancestor of a people, and his responsibility these days fell to culling those who fell to the sicker parts of their genetic codes. Most superheroes called it murder; Abraxas called it mercy, because the shifters - werewolves, weretigers, werebears, etc. - he hunted had become killers themselves, drunk on blood and human flesh, risking the wrath of the rest of humanity upon their brothers and sisters. Abraxas made it quick and merciful; superheroes usually didn't care.

Whenever he had to deal with someone in New York, it was usually Spider-Man who showed up to give him the evening's headache on top of the evening's heartache. Abraxas had long since stopped trying to explain that his descendants were sick, and that only death would free them from their madness. The tender kindness of boys like Spider-Man made Abraxas's heart ache too, compared to the self-righteousness of most other heroes, but it had finally worn Abraxas's patience thin.

He sensed Spider-Man before the web shot had tried to stop him from slashing a sick werewolf's neck. Abraxas was too old, too experienced for that to stop him. He made his mark for the evening, letting his ill child bleed to death in his arms while he glared into the shadows for Spider-Man to show himself.

"Are you done trying to make my evening difficult, boy?" Abraxas's voice echoed harshly and telepathically. "I could have ended this with less pain if not for you."
