The Daemon AU Meme

In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (or the movie The Golden Compass), every person has a creature called a daemon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Daemons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).



Basic Daemon Facts:

- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's daemons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the daemon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's daemon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Daemons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but daemons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's daemon without permission is a terrible violation.

How it works:

Just design a daemon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muse's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's daemons and let your daemons interact too.

[Most people assume that one of Zepar's six housecats is his daemon, or even the bobcat that can sometimes be seen roaming the back yard. They're only partially wrong, Angels -especially the fallen- don't have daemons of their own, and tend to collect strays of whatever sort to make up for it.]

With Andromache exiting the shower, shaking her short hair into something only slightly less unkempt and a bit drier, comes Dzantemir as well; he's curled around her leg, head nosing around her thigh until she stops moving so much. When she crawls onto the couch beside Joe, Zan, flicks his tongue at Naima and slithers his way up to be able to win himself around both their necks, his two-foot muscular length coiled gently where he can nuzzle them both.

Nile Freeman + The Old Guard + OTA

[Nile's daemon is Kilimanjaro, usually just called Kili, and he's a common potoo. Which means that sometimes he looks like a branch and sometimes he looks like a muppet and neither of them are quite sure how to act around the rest of the Guard and being so casual with each other's daemons.
Side-note: I theorize that sometimes their daemons change shape after a death, especially a rough one. Whether or not this has happened with Kili just depends on how far along things are.]

Klaus | Umbrella Academy | OTA

[Esther had almost always been something small, small enough for Klaus to catch and hide if the ghosts got restless, since they made no differentiation between human and daemon when they were grabbing at things.

She'd settled on a magpie about the same time Klaus needed something sturdy enough to fetch and carry small items on occasion.

Din Djarin was a man of few words content to let his body language and his intimidating looking dog daemon Visla say everything that needed to be said. It was rare that either one of them got along with anyone else. At most, like with Cara Dune and Greef Kraga they tolerated them.

But from the moment Din met Cobb Vanth something felt...different. Vis had actually wanted to be close to his daemon and the kid liked him. It was like everyone else knew something Din didn't. It had only been less than a day and Din was currently staring into the fire after the rest of the Tusken camp went to bed, Vis at his feet and the kid sleeping in his arms trying to figure things out.

(Nile's Daemon is Olabisi, or 'Ola', a peregrine falcon. She's female, which definitely earns Nile some looks, which they mostly ignore. Ola (and Nile) are still adjusting to immortality, and how free the other immortals' daemons are with being touched by the family--it's...going)

grogu / the mandalorian

( When his temple was burned down - before he went into the dark - someone told Grogu that keeping Kiqua hidden was the most important thing for him to do. So, for decades, that's what Grogu did, and the daemon that used to fly and dance in the air was tucked away in the corner of his metal pram for no one else to see. It would be decades later that their father would find them and she would feel safe enough to fly again.

Kiqua is a scaly whisp of a creature, and she is less than a third of the size of Grogu himself. She had two wings and four sets of claws, somewhat resembling some type of flying lizard that is rarely seen in the galaxy. Her back is speckled with dots, and she enjoys changing her hide's color to keep Grogu amused. Since they're still children, she can change into other creatures, but this is the shape she's most comfortable in. And no, her grasp of speaking Basic is no better than Grogu's, unfortunately. )

Din was used to it just being him and his daemon, so when the kid and his joined their little clan it had taken him a while to get used to the feeling of sharing his space, He was still finding his way in being a clan leader and one of those concerns dealing with training the kid's dameon.

"How can I help them if I can't understand them," he says to Vis, his dog like dameon. He sighs softly. She gently head butts his thigh. "You are doing the best you can," she said in her soft rumble. "it's all any parent can do."

[Sam's daemon is named Sasha and she is a lioness covered in scars given that Sam spent over 100 years in Hell at one point and she took as much of his pain as she could. She is quiet compared to his brother's dameon though she will not hesitate to give you the business if you even look at her boy funny. She spends most of her time pressed close to Sam's side not wanting to be far from him.]

[Matt has a red hawk named Bella which tends to stand out in a city like New York, but because Matt was blinded before Bella settled on her form, she felt he needed someone to protect him with good eyesight and so red hawk it is. She is his moral compass and tends to scare criminals as much as Daredevil does. Not to mention how bad ass he comes across in court with her sitting on his shoulder.

Finn | Star Wars

( Like most stormtroppers, Finn's dæmon was forced to settle early as a hunting dog, and she was conditioned by the First Order to endure long distances away from her human to be a better soldier in the cause. But after his first battle, FN-2187's unnamed dæmon did something highly unusual - it shifted. Before she could be separated from her human and sent back to reconditioning, the two of them helped a rebel pilot escape from the First Order base; the rest is history.

The still-unnamed dæmon has retained the ability to shift, and neither of them knows if she will settle again. She tends to take forms as far away from her original canine form as possible, even when it doesn't feel natural. Eagles and big cats tend to be most common, but she's at her best in the form of a white wolf. Both she and Finn try to avoid this, however, because the last thing they want is to make others think that they are still loyal to the First Order. )

Ever since Finn had helped rescue him and Shara from the First Order, Poe had felt responsible for making sure the younger man was okay. He liked Finn and so did his daemon, but they both knew they had to be careful Everything that was new to Finn was old hat to Poe and he both couldn't assume Finn knew something or treat him with kid gloves either.

Currently he trying to find Finn to invite him to share a meal with them, but it wasn't easy. "Finn buddy you around," he called Shara gently chirping the same for his daemon from Poe's shoulder.

She's a fierce fighter but very protective of the innocent. And she doesn't mind when a certain green child gently pulls on her fur.]

[Poe has a tiny mouse like creature with feathers instead of fur named after his mother Shara. She likes hanging out in his pocket or riding on his shoulder. When he's working on his X-Wing, she sits on top of BB-8 and watches chiming in with ideas for adjustments. Her feathers change colors depending on the environment she's in and she is not shy about sharing her opinons when it comes to her human doing dumb things]

( Alakannuaq, or just Alak, is an arctic tern. He keeps his black-capped northern plumage year-round, since of course he and Silna don't actually migrate, at least never quite so far south as these birds can go. Spends a lot of time in the air, as arctic terns are pretty good hoverers, but will dive in unfrozen sea whenever he gets the chance.

If you spot Silna somewhere far off, out on the ice, you'd be forgiven for thinking her daemon is a polar bear, taller even than one of the panserbjørne, and with a weird look about its head.

You'd be forgiven, and also best served hoping it stays far, far off. )

Queenie's daemon is a chipmunk named Irving. He occasionally changes colors, and not just regular chipmunk hues, he's been known to show up as any color of the rainbow, at least for a short time.
He can usually be found on her shoulder or in her apron pocket, but does tend to like sitting anywhere that he can see people.]

Ripley 8 | Alien Resurrection

[Ripley's daemon is something that suits both her species. Not a xenomorph that would have hatched from a cat, but a blend of both species, enough so that there were ruffs and patches of fur that hid prickled spines over the back and head of a very feline face. She had eyes, but they were solid black and had a nictitating lids. Size-wise, Newt stands with her head at just under Ripley's waist. Her coloring is dark and almost iridescent, like an oil slick, and that includes the sheen that flickers over the srips of fur. Newt likes to make herself scarce, slinking along unseen but always watching over Ripley, though she's prone to sleep with her when they have the chance for downtime. Newt, like both felines and xenomorphs, ignore the laws of physics and gravity and one might find her dropping down from above.]
