This union has been tainted from the start, forever bearing the chains of an arranged marriage. It would be understandable if you couldn't bear to look at your new life partner, eternal reminder of your stolen future that they are, much less like them. Much less love them... Still, things can change. You could realize that they are in the same boat as you or, that when compared to others around you, they are the lesser of evils. Perhaps you even open up to the idea of a friendship; at the very least, an alliance may be in order to become a power couple in a perilous world. From that innocent decision or sense of self-preservation, a new feelings sparks. Something like affection. Something, you realize in the wake of speeding heartbeats, like love. Will you acknowledge this? Can the two of you have a happily ever after - happier than if you'd met in another fashion - or will you hold firm in your distaste? how to play. - Everybody loves "couples forged by less-than-ideal circumstances" tropes! - Comment with your character, prefs, all that good stuff. - Reply to others. - IDEC where you set your threads, it's wide open. Fantasy world with hairy hobbits, old-timey lands, future AUs, do a space marriage for all I care. I'm sure they're still getting married in Star Wars or whatever. POSSIBLE REASONS FOR MARRIAGE: ① Station → You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you. ② Feud → You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families. ③ Economics → Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down. ④ Empire → You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable. ⑤ Tribute → You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war. ⑥ Bloodline → Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection. ⑦ Disapproval → Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be. POSSIBLE SCENARIOS: ① First meeting → This is the very first time you're meeting your future spouse. ② Courtship → To get to know each other and encourage affection, your family has approved of you going on dates. ③ Engagement party → Be it a huge, formal affair or a small, intimate get together, you're celebrating (or pretending). ④ Wedding day → The big day! ⑤ Reception → The big party! ⑥ Wedding night → Every meme needs a smut prompt, right? ⑦ Honeymoon → Where will you go with your new spouse and what will you do there?

[The trouble is this: this is, at least in principle, what the Honourable James Fleamont Potter, Esq. has been angling for since he first met Lily Evans. In fact, it's something he already did, and the memory of the humiliation and heartbreak of making all the relevant preparations, getting her father's blessing, and finally getting down on one knee in Convent Gardens - only to be very publicly and very bluntly jilted - is still raw. Not because of the scandal (he's weathered worse social storms), but because he had really, really wanted her to say yes - wanted it so much that, despite everything, he'd genuinely convinced himself that she would.]

[The trouble is this: not for the first time in his life, James Fleamont Potter is, against all odds, getting an unearned chance. He is being handed, on a plate, all the reason he could possibly need to finally win the woman of his dreams. He has Mrs Lily Potter sitting beside him, resplendent in white, with his grandmother's engagement ring finally on her hand, the wedding veil nestled in her auburn hair, the vows still faintly ringing in his ears.]

[The trouble is this: it's wrong.]

[She may have noticed the trouble. Certainly, he's been far less enthusiastic in both the courtship and the proposal this time around, and hasn't made at all the fuss and fancy one might expect from a gentleman finally making the perfect match. He's been every inch the gentleman since it was first discussed, never trying to meet her without a chaperone or to make grand and embarrassing gestures as he did before this agreement, always unfailingly polite to her, without any of the sly double-entendres or silliness that were so common before. Maybe she can recognise, in that, the reason for his doubt. Maybe she just takes it as embarrassment over her previous refusal, or as him being less interested in the prize now the chase is done.]

[Regardless, he's been unusually sober throughout the ceremony, his dourness not helped by his dark wedding suit and the unfamiliarly tidy slick of his hair, pulled back with great effort and the administering of various potions into a ponytail that, at least at the altar, was actually neat. (Now, an hour or two later, stray strands are beginning to escape, his usual wild mop of curls threatening to make a reappearance). He's spoken little - at least by his standards - to the guests, and almost not at all to Lily herself. His smiles are half-hearted, and he never was good at hiding that kind of thing.]

[The trouble is, she was supposed to want him. Deep down in his heart, James Potter is, as he has always been, a romantic. There's no romance in marrying someone because the alternative is death and chaos. There's no romance in marrying someone because, and only because, a child is needed. That's not love. That's mercenary. And it's wrong.]

[But it isn't as wrong as it would be to let his own feelings get in the way of things. Because the alternative is chaos, or so it seems; the prophecy uncommonly clear, the truth of it chafing on him. It's worse for the fact that he doesn't even get to be the hero of the prophecy - that all of this, all his life, all their marriage, is all just to be a prelude to a child they might one day have. It's a lot to take in, and it's a lot to carry. And it's a lot to know that everyone, from his friends to his family to his new bride, on some level expects him to be happy about it.]

[He's not happy. Getting what he wants, getting it this way, is miserable. It feels like cheating. It feels like he's robbed her of something. It feels like he somehow willed this into being, all this anxiety and all the pressure on her, and he doesn't even have the decency to appreciate it.]

[He takes a deep breath, and manages a smile that almost looks like his own, offering Lily a bow and his outstretched hand.]

Shall we dance, Mrs Potter?

[Then, in an undertone that hopefully doesn't carry around the ballroom:]

Half an hour, and then I think you can gracefully bolt if you need.
