[It's wet this time of year, in these lands, but Esca wouldn't call it cold. Esca had learned as a child how to manage it, the icy fogs that would blanket his family's lands. He learned to ride for hours on end, to walk without stopping. He learned how to seal his own wounds and draw arrow pieces from beneath the skin with a small fish hook. How to curl into little spaces and stay there as his limbs had all gone numb, to stay as long as he had to for a deer to pass. He hasn't lived in that world for many years now, but then, he thinks there is nothing that this new life could do that would compare. Esca had learned to bear many hurts. Everything that came after was small.

Rain pours down heavily, in great swaths at a time. It soaks through the cloth he carries overhead and the puddles he runs through splash in his wake, flicking his calves with muddy freckles and flooding the sandals he wears. The shape of his body looks like a bow.

Marcus is with the horses, a task he's sure is meant for servants but one he's found at more often than not. Esca squints through the downpour as he closes the distance to the stable, but the water drips from his hair and off of his chin even after he's inside. The corner of his mouth pulls downward. ( The world had snapped and snapped back. Lives lost had returned, and most of what Thanos had taken had been restored. Steve had almost used the chaos in the aftermath to slip himself into another life, one where he could have tried to live out the illusion of a life he might have had in another universe. Instead, he chose to return a changed world, to keep moving forward, and into the arms of a master of illusion.

Some time after the work of the Stones had been undone, Steve had crossed paths with Loki, who Thor had said died five years ago. Had that been undone as a side-effect of reversing the work of the Stones? Had Loki managed to follow his usual M.O. of slipping through the cracks? In any case, he had smooth-talked his way into having Steve remain silent for the time being.

And then they somehow smooth-talked each other into something charged and entangled. Loki flitted in and out of Steve's life as he pleased, doing God knows what. Occasionally, he snatched Steve away for some lighthearted mischief on an adventure. Weeks went between their trysts, and like clockwork, it had been a few weeks since he had last seen Loki.

It was midmorning as Steve returned to his apartment from a jog. He slipped inside, t-shirt soaked through with sweat and paused for half a second. Something was off, but it didn't set his hair on end like a threat. He scanned the living room and set his keys on the kitchen counter. Nothing to be seen.
